Biography

By Martin Sitter
Bill Burgess has been a good friend of mine for years. In fact, when I stopped working as Apple's Lead Logic educator to concentrate fully on building macProVideo.com, Bill Burgess was the person Apple hired to replace me!
Over the years we've grown quite close, and I've been incredibly please to watch as Bill's skills brought him increased recognition at Apple. They found out what I already knew - Bill Burgess is one of the best educators in the industry!
Bill is a musician, composer, video/visual artist and the former Pro Audio Product Marketing Manager and Logic Pro Artist Relations Manager for Apple Inc. As a Logic specialist imbedded in Los Angeles, he interfaced with dozens of the world’s most visible musicians and composers, gathered feature requests, and worked to bring those requests into reality with Apple software engineering teams. A successful musician and composer himself, he has written dreamy dark electronic music for NBC, Disney, Miramax Films, Apple Inc (you can hear his music in every box of Final Cut Studio.)
as well as dozens of indie films and projects. Bill has recently relocated from Los Angeles to Austin TX, where he is the Chief Creative for an all audio ad agency that delivers custom audio and music content for mobile. He is currently writing electronic music and collaborating on moving images and text for an upcoming youtube content channel that specializes in merging music and visual performance into a seamless whole.
Bill is an Apple Certified Logic Pro 8 Trainer, Apple Certified Logic Pro T3 Training Instructor, Apple Certified XSAN for Video and Final Cut Pro 6. He serves on the Avid/Digidesign Customer Advisory Board and is a Waves Beta Tester. Bill has also contributed to the following publications: Quality Control Editor, Apple Pro Training Series: Advanced Logic Pro 7 by David Dvorin. Technical Editor, Apple Pro Training Series: Logic Pro 7 and Logic Express 7, by Martin Sitter.

A tutorial that is thorough and yet entertaining. Bill is both geek and gigging musician (at least that's how he comes across). Battery: The Art of Drum Programming
May 18, 2012
Extremely valuable insight and advice on drum programming. It really challenges you to take your rhythm programming seriously and think about different ways to keep from mousing in generic beats. We could probably stand to have another, more techy Battery lesson- primarily because Native Instruments' Battery 3 manual is surprisingly bad- ma...

Battery may be the most difficult instrument to explain. If you just focus on the program, you still won't know much about rhythm, and if you focus on the rhythm, there's a lot to Battery you'll miss or end up doing the hard way. That being said, the author of this tutorial tries to explain as much as possible about both the instrument and the playing, and it makes this tutorial seem quite sloppy and unfinished. While entirely informative, I don't think that this is as professional or well organized as it could/should be. It seems to go incredibly in depth about random things, and skims over/isn't clear about some of the important basics. While I appreciate the humor being thrown into some situations, the truth of it is that in this series it detracts from the "groove" of learning.

What could be better than to have one of Apple's developers of Logic and Mainstage walk you through the software. Bill's great at letting you know how the software thinks and offers a lot of Apple interface knowledge as well. I have been on a Mac since 1989 and thought I knew most of it. He also offers hardware interface solutions which is key to having the software work for you rather than you work for the software in an onstage live situation.

I bought the First Mainstage (version 1) Tutorials and found them extremely useful and Bill has a great voice and sense of humor. So I was a bit hesitant to buy this one but I can truly say i am not disappointed one bit. There are about 5 hours of information here and I am finding as Mainstage 2 is resonibly different to MS1 that we are not just running over mostly what has been taught before. Right from the start there are tons of interesting tips and tricks and insights into how to get the ...

I'm brand new to Ableton Live and started this tutorial with virtually little to no knowledge of the product. Bill Burgess is definitely one of the best presenters I have heard. It never got old. It took me a few days/late nights to get through it all (I paused a lot and followed along in Live) but it was well worth it.

If you are just getting into the program Mainstage you must purchase the tutorial MAINSTAGE 101: Core Mainstage by Bill Burgess. I was in crunch time preparing for a live gig (my first in years after being a studio mole). I was faced with having to perform multiple patch changes for a set of over 20 songs (many requiring multiple patch changes) and having very little time left to set this up before the live show. This tutorial saved my gig! Literally overnight I had a strong hold on Mainstage. ...

I'm seven lessons into Mainstage Core and feel it's really helping me understand a complex and wonderful piece of software. I was first introduced to it while playing live keyboards for a touring musical. At the time I was very impressed with Mainstage. Though I had nothing to do with programming the setup, as a first time user Mainstage was extremely user friendly. Beginning the lessons yesterday, I was able to follow Bill Burgess every step of the way. He's not only very informative, but als...

Initially I had some trouble with getting ned to work as I am running windows vista 64, crappiest os ever :) That being said this tutorial is amazing!!! The instructor knows what he's talking about, shows lots of cool techniques and is actually a great musician. Finding this combination in a video tutorial is very difficult. Enough said buy this tutorial if you want to learn Live and be inspired.

A+ to Bill for this tutorial. All was clear except some parts on Warping. I thought there could have been a little more basic Warping info. Maybe it's me, but I am still a little unclear about all the ways Warping could be used. All in all, this is a very informative tutorial and well worth the bucks. When is the next installment on Live 8???

I think these tutorials was great, but I missed some using LE without the Complete Production Toolkit or DV Toolkit 2. I know many soundengineers that only got the LE pack. I'm one of them. So It would be great if future tutorials have this. That is why I only rate it 4.

I am about to start Post Production Audio on a TV show using Pro Tools 8. I found these tutorials after googling and realised I had struck gold. They are the best tutorials around by far. Bill did a fantastic job explaining the ins and outs of this app. Part of using mainstage _is_ unfortunately troubleshooting it as you go, and this video gives great insight into troubleshooting 'on the fly'. I found the authors wit/sense of humor particularly entertaining especially while learning this sometimes frustrating app. those of us who use mainstage live and spend time loving it and 'suffering'(you know) with it will benefit from many of the details bill offers while teaching this...

Excellent Tutorial. Mr. Burgess really did his homework on this one and puts out an outstanding fully in-depth tutorial that really opens up this brand new mysterious program. I highly recommend this to every performer who has to plug in an instrument or use a mic. The tutorial goes way beyond what is in the manual. This was the 1st video training I have ever purchased and found it a lot more enjoyable and effective than trying to wade through manuals. However, a more task-oriented approach may have served better at times. For example: how to get Mainstage to play sound effect loops simultaneously to playing live keyboards. I've found that some of the trickier set up issues involved how the MIDI keyboard's knobs and buttons are set up, and obviously although dealing with each and every keyboard and manufact...

Not only is the content excellent (as usual) but a star is born in Bill Burgess. He has a very conversational style - you feel like he's sitting next to you anticipating your questions - and he just cracks me up!
