28 Reviews- Learn the art of Drum & Bass production, using Logic! This tutorial is produced by D&B pioneer, Nigel Broad.
Nigel Broad
“As one of the original pioneers of the early 1990s hardcore breakbeat/techno scene (which eventually evolved into drum & bass), Nigel had a string of dance chart hits in the UK, under aliases such as Release and Rhythm Junior.”
Biography
Initially signed to the Contagious Records (UK) label as an artist and producer, Nigel soon took on the roles of co-executive producer and head of A&R at the label.
Trained as an audio engineer at the world-famous Marquee Studios in London, Nigel would often produce and engineer for other artists at the labels’ 24-track studio in Dagenham, Essex, preferring the solace of the studio to the business side of running a label.
In 1994, Nigel relocated to Los Angeles, California, to work as a composer and digital artist for film & TV. Since then, Nigel has had over 100 tracks placed in network and cable TV shows, in commercials, and several movies.
It was while working for Apple’s ProApps division in 2002 that Nigel first discovered Logic, and soon after became an Apple Certified Pro in Logic Pro. Nigel has over 25 years’ experience in nearly every aspect of music production to share with you, with tips, tricks and production secrets to help you get the most from your music!

This tutorial started out very simply but gathered in richness and complexity as it went along. By the end I was very impressed at the quality of the track. Nigel certainly knows his way around Logic Studio! I have been using Logic on and off for a while now (just as an amateur of course) and have been through Logic 101. There's no doubt that you need to know Logic, and the principles of mixing, quite well (e.g., the point of using a compressor and how it works) in order not to follow along in p...

Sometimes a glimpse of somebody else's song construction vibe can be useful. The dnb confessions video was honest and revealing. Not earth shattering, just a nice snapshot of bringing a dnb song together. Very enjoyable.

A very inspiring tutorial! And you get a lot of tips and tricks on the "journey" going from scratch to a finished song. Never say again: I´m stuck, I´ve run out of ideas and inspiration. The chapters about stutter, couldn´t get my arms down, just to mention one. To the average Logic user it may be a drawback that Nigel uses external Midi and 3. party software instruments to build the fundamentals: Bass & drums.

Really good video, it has so many small things mentioned that helps to compose and produce a song and a whole music album from the scratch. I suppose that many people expected something typical like "house and bass music". Well, music is more than just some beats and a cool bass line. Nigel has done an excellent video and I advise everyone to watch the tutorial more than ones. This tutorial is so much different than all the others videos here at macprovideo. I enjoyed every part of it.

Very interesting set of videos which take the viewer on a journey from a very basic idea to a fully realised track. However, i personally would have liked less of the basic logic pro instruction as this has been covered very well in other instructional video sets on this website. I would have like more instruction on the actual tricks such as cutting up the drum samples etc. Nonetheless, this was a very informative video and Nigel Broad's infectious enthusiasm engages the student to inspire the...

Absolutely brilliant! As the track started out I was wondering, but the way that Nigel builds it up, adds vocals and tweaks away is extremely revealing, informative and entertaining. This is exactly the tutorial I was looking for as arranging is such a key skill and tricky to get across successfully. Highly recommended.

Excellent tutorial and instructor. I'm new to learning Logic and am not a drum and bass producer -- I'm more of a rock-folk/blues-jazzy type guitarist singer/songwriter. But I learned a lot! Just some of the organizing and workflow ideas were worth the price. It was also useful for me to get an in-depth overview of some of the potential of how Logic might impact my own songwriting and production in the future. Thanks, Nigel -- fantastic work! Highly recommended.

This is my fourth tutorial module with MacProVideo. I had been focusing mostly on Core Logic, Ultrabeat and Flex Time and I got this set in order to learn more about actual production. There are so many things I learned here from vocal stuttering to properly grouping and compressing drum sub-mixes. I appreciated how clean and methodical his arrangment was and how beautiful the finished product turned out. I'm going to have to watch these again to get all I can from these. Nigel, if you read thes...

Great tutorials with loads of techniques and inspiration. If you have seen Olav's videos then you will like the way Nigel operates. They are very similar in their style of teaching. My only recommendation for next time is to put a bit more emphasis on creating a unique drum part. Other than that, this video is fantastic!

This is a great tutorial. I think I have almost every Logic release prior to now and it is great to see someone put all these (and their own) learnings together in one tutorial. This is really helpful for inspiration - particularly when inspiration might be lacking. It is the relaxed commentary and self developed tips that really make this video enjoyable. Great work and hope to see more from Nigel Broad in future releases. Keep the tips coming!

I've heard some interesting things said about this tutorial on the forums and on other tutorials' reviews. Bottom line, this is a VERY CREATIVE idea for a tutorial and EXTREMELY USEFUL. I respect that Nigel had to dig deep to organize this tutorial and make it relevant. He did it! It's very creatively inspiring and gives you a lot of "tricks" for producing that I use all the time. Also, discusses how to use Stylus RMX. Great tut!!

This product deserves all of the stars shown above. I am new to logic and needed more in depth info than some of the other online training services provide. What a bargain at the special sale price last month. Thanks Mac Pro video.

Very Good Tutorial. If you want to see a pro at work in Logic, this is a must own. Nigel has a very effective "No fluff" procedure that is easy to follow. You will also learn how that "BIG SOUND" is produced. (in the mix). This is as good a mixing tutorial as it is a production tutorial. It's like two in one, and he makes it look easy. It's well worth the investment!

It's really really interesting to see Nigel going through all the steps of doing a track. Well explained, not too much details, just enough. A great way to validate that what I was doing on my second production was the good process! Thanks Nigel!

I had been waiting for a tutorial like this for quiet some time. If you know your way around Logic comfortably but are interested in how exactly a pro would create a song (not just drum and bass) from start to finish inside Logic, then this tutorial is for you. Very concise and informative. Thanks Nigel and Macpro :)

This tutorial was so helpful !! You can learn interfaces all day long but watching someone go through the process from idea to mix really takes you there. Nigel is particularly easy and enjoyable to listen to. I watched the whole thing straight through, followed his process and have a new piece almost finished. Yeah! I was able to apply it to my own music style easily and it's working like a charm. I know it was a lot of work but I hope Nigel will please consider making more of these. Many Thank...

Thanks Nigel and Macprovideo. This is the tutorial I've been looking for for some time now. In this tutorial Nigel goes over the mystic art of building an arrangement. I'm only half way through the course, and the inspiration is flying. I have never created an arrangement this fast and effectively before. Nigels approach to this makes things easy. I would recommend this Tutorial to everyone with Logic. Thanks Guys, If you ever do something similar with a different genre I'll buy that too.

Hi and hope you are well. I think this tutorial is brilliant and as detailed as I was looking for, especially the file management system. Everything so far is perfect and I am looking forward to the rest of the tutorial. I'd really like to see more on the drum processing side of things and I'm sure Nigel has this in the bag. His voice and tempo of explaining are perfect, he sounds so natural and this is definitely his forte. Thank you and I hope to see and hear more from Nigel. Sincerely, ...
