USB cable LENGTH and SIGNAL STRENGTH?

I'm setting up to perform with my bandmate. We are considering using just ONE laptop. Everything will work out great. The only problem is that I may need to run an especially long USB cable from my keyboard into his laptop.

Is there any problem with this? How long can a USB cable be while still maintaining a strong signal?

Thanks!

how long do you need the USB cable to be? What do you mean by especially long? Are you simply triggering sounds on his Mac?

I've used a USB cable with an extension connected to my MIDI Controller which was at least 10-12 meters. Everything worked fine.

thanks

yes, I am JUST triggering sounds on his mac.

I don't know how long I will want it. We are starting rehearsel on monday.

What kind of "extension" are you referring to?

I'm considering getting a MIDI to USB adaptor and running a MIDI cable out of my keyboard (30 to 5 ft) into the laptop.

Is this a good idea?

Thanks!

I was just using a simple USB to USB extension cable... If it's just 5ft.. that should be fine in theory.

oops... I meant 30 to 50 ft. Would this be okay? I'd probably lean towards using the 30 ft option.

wow... 30-50ft... are you playing a stadium?? ;-)

I haven't tested with cables that long. There may be latency issues, but the only way you'll know is to try it out on your setup.
