Hi,
I am trying to transfer a song file from Logic on my
old computer to the new computer and put the
song on a thumb drive. How do I drop my song into Logic on new computer? I have it on the desktop and tried to open a new song and drop it,
but didn't work. Any ideas? Thanks.

Also, I have a song on the old computer Logic program that seems to be too big for the thumb drive even though there is nothing on the thumb drive. How do I tranfer this song?

Thanks for your help.

Can you give us some more details on the specs (type of Mac i.e iMac, Macbook; processor; RAM; Hard Disk size; Airport?) on the old computer and the specs on the new computer. And what version of Logic you have on each computer

You can choose Save a Copy As under the Logic File Menu. You can choose your Thumb Drive as the location.

Make sure you tick 'Copy External Audio Files'. Or else Logic may not be able to find the associated audio files when you move it across to the new computer.

Gary,

I think you need to edit the second line of your last post.

......between "RAM" and "Airport"

Hi redlogic,

Just trying to ascertain exactly what Mac hardware the user has, so we can distinguish the best route to take to transfer the files from one machine to the other.

For example, the amount of RAM which is in the unit. And if it is Airport compatible. The more details we have, the more we can help the user.

Sorry the post may have sounded a bit confusing.

Yeah...I understand all of that.

But...I think you need to take a GOOD LOOK at the words between "RAM" and "Airport".

See it now?

Freudian slip, perhaps?

Whoo! Sorry I only see the mistake now. Sorry guys. Definitely a slip of the keyboard. I'll get an Administrator to change it so it reads correct.

Hello Gary,
Sorry it has taken me so long to get back to you as
I have been having a lot of trouble with my email
on new computer which is now fixed.

Yes, the old computer I was referring has 1 GB ram and is a 10.5.8 version and is a G5. I am using a Logic pro 8
program. My computer that I am trying to transfer
a song to is a IMac with 2GB and has an Intel Core Duo.

I just did the steps you mentioned in your previous message and saved as a copy in Logic File menu and choose thumb drive.
In the end it copied, but didn't seem to complete the process saying there was insufficient space.
I am a bit surprised as the song wasn't even that long. I had another file on the thumb drive that I
haven't been able to delete, but it doesn't seem to
be taking any space as there are no files attached to it. So this is one problem.....

Then, I opened my Imac to see if I could drop in
what was put into the thumb drive (even if it wasn't complete). I dropped it under the tracks and
it asked me some questions such as do I want this to go into existing files, etc. I am not sure
what to check. I tried to check a couple of answers, but to no avail. I want to be able to continue working on the song and don't want it all on one track. The audio loops and audio are appearing but completely out of order and not at all looking like my song.

I love the song whichI did on the G5 and hope that I can retrieve it on the IMac so that I can continue to work on
it.

Any help is welcomed.
Thank you.

P.S. Gary,
I have my song successfully transferred as a mp3
file. Am I able to somehow open this open and
work on it?

I think that the audio files associated with the project are obviously taking up a lot more space than is available on the thumb drive.

Do you have any other form of external hard drive that you can copy the project onto?

You could copy it through your network if both Macs are on the same network.

If they are you will need to enable file sharing on the G5 sothat the iMac can access the logic project. Let me know if they are on the same network and I will take you through the steps to enable file sharing and how your iMac can acces and copy across the project via the network.

If they are not on the same network, we will have to think of another way you cantransferthe file across.

Maybe also check for us how big your logic project is. Choose the folder where you saved the copy to.then press Cmd+I. This will give you size of the folder.

Your easiest option will be to get an external hard drive with enough size to copy the project onto.

Hi Gary,
Ok, progress is being made here. I have a Lacie
and bounced the song on G5 to the Lacie and then opened it in IMac. I now have the .aif and .mp3 version of the song on Desktop on IMac.

How do I download these files now onto Logic.
I want it to appear as it was on the G5 when I was
working on the song with all the tracks in their
proper places. Is this possible?

Looking forward to the next step.

Thanks for your help!

Hi jimandroz,

I am a little confused. Do you want to move a whole Logic project (the Logic file with all it's associated audio files and settings), or do just want to import a audio file (such as an aiff or mp3) into a Logic on your iMac?

If the former, then you don't need to bounce down the track in Logic on your G5. You need to copy the whole Logic project folder from your G5 to the LaCie drive, then connect the LaCie drive to your iMac and copy the Logic folder to your IMac.

ok, I will try to bounce the entire logic project as I
bounced the song by selecting all and bounced.
I presume I need to click on the entire folder which I will go ahead and do now and let you know.

I went to the old computer (G5) and dragged in the
entire logic project into LaCie. Now it is available
on my new computer, but I am not sure now how to get
it into Logic as a song to work with. All the tracks are there. How do I open song now in Logic so I can
start to work with it?
Thanks

Did you just drag the Logic project file or the whole folder associated to the specific project? Make sure you drag the whole folder not just the Logic project file.

When you copy that folder to your iMac you should be able to open the project by simply clicking on the Logic project file.

I copied the blue folder only. However when I look
at what I have on my computer I have 3 things:
the folder which say audio files. 2) the piano symbol 3) project file backups.

Should I go back and copy all these again?

Hi Gary,
Ok, just went back and copied everything.
Then dragged in the entire project. (checked where
it said create new tracks), what showed up was
2 measure phrases of many of the tracks and
duplicates (up to 7 times) of other tracks.

I'm baffled. Is there a way I can speak to on the
phone to finish this last step. I feel I am so close.
I have followed everything you have said up to this
point. I can email you my phone.

Is the problem checking the wrong boxes as to existing tracks or new tracks?

You shouldn't be getting a dialog box at all, and I'm not sure what you're doing that is causing that dialog box to open.

And you shouldn't be bouncing anything at all before you do this. You don't need to have Logic open on the old computer (or, while you're copying, on the new computer for that matter). You just need to copy the entire folder via the Finder. i.e. drag the entire project folder (which will have an Audio Files folder, a Bounces folder, and a Logic Song File icon inside of it) to your La Cie, then connect your La Cie to your iMac and copy that same folder to your iMac.

Once you copy the entire logic project onto your iMac, you should be able to simply double click on the logic song file, and it should open. Or, if you have an earlier version of Logic on the iMac as well, drop the song file icon onto the Logic Studio 9 icon, and that will force it to open in 9, then you can save it as a Logic 9 project.

Of course, this may go without saying, but the Logic file is the one that looks like a little keyboard, or a little preview of the arrange page. That's the file you double click on.

What is sitting on my desktop now on IMac is a
folder (my song). Inside this is: Logic song file icon,
an audio files blue folder and a folder that says,
project file backups.

My question is: is this the entire project? The only
thing that you mentioned that is not in theree is a bounces folder.

In any case, this is what I see when I double click.
When I drag this into the Logic program (the 2 programs are the same on each computer), it doesn't allow me to drop it in.

BTW, I when loading song onto LaCie, I did it by
going into the finder.

Thanks for any help!
