Ultrabeat realtime patterns?

Loving Steve H's Ultrabeat Unleashed!


I want to learn about real time pattern recording with Ultrabeat.

So am I correct, in the Ultrabeat sequencer you cannot record a pattern in real time? You must use step edit or a preset to make a pattern?
If indeed the only way to record a beat pattern in real time is to use Logic's arrange window or piano roll in conjunction with Ultrabeat...can you still tweak your patterns with parameter offset sequencing? Can you take a real time pattern from the arrange window or piano roll and put it into Ultrabeat's sequencer?

Welcome to the forums!

Unfortunately, you can't use a MIDI Controller to record patterns directly into Ultrabeat's sequencer... and you're not able to drag MIDI regions into it either :(

If you know how to set up the Hyper Editor though, you can build a pretty nifty Drum Pattern Editor - more intuitive than using the Piano Roll... but not quite as visually appealing as Ultrabeat's built-in sequencer.

You may be interested in Native Instrument's Maschine or Maschine Mikro (hardware and software) which is a very cool sequencer and more!

Wow, that's a bummer about Ultrabeat's limitations, given the multitude of things you can do with it.. But I can use the Ultrabeat sounds to record into the arrange window in Logic right? Then mess with them in the hyper-editor? And the tweaking of the Ultrabeat module (LFO, osc, envelopes) will effect those sounds still?

Do you know of a tutorial that has work-flow tips about making beats/patterns without using the UB's sequencer?

Excuse the late reply!

Yup. You're not alone in wishing that Ultrabeat had just a couple more features in place... which would make it an awesome Drum Instrument/Sampler/Sequencer... :)

You can use UB as the instrument and record direct into Logic's sequencer and view it via the Arrange area, Piano Roll, Hyper Editor, Event List, Score Editor etc - they're just ways of viewing the data - but yes, essentially you can treat UB as if it were any regular instrument :)

You can also manually input notes into UB's Step Sequencer and then drag the pattern to the Arrange area.

In terms of drum/beat making tutorials... there are a few... what music are you into?
