Problem with Aperture 2 files

I have quite a few photos stored in Aperture 2. I considered upgrading to Aperture 3 and actually went so far as installing it. However, I ended up not completing the install - did not enter serial number when it got to that point.

Yesterday I went to open up Aperture 2 and all of my photos are acting very weird. Most thumbnails are totally distorted. When I select a thumbnail, the large preview version will appear correctly for a few seconds then blank out, etc.

I tried rebuilding the photo library (twice) but still same problem. I'm totally puzzled. Wondering if the Aperture 3 install messed with the library, even though I did not complete the installation?

I also just had my computer repaired (bad main logic board) but everything else appears to be running fine. Only Aperture photos are showing any erratic behavior.

Any ideas????

Hi Chards,

Was your aperure 2 library working fine after the logic board replacement and before you began installing Aperture 3?

Why did you stop installing Aperture 3 mid way through? In fact did some content begin to get installed when you stopped the installation?

If you stopped the install process after some data had been written to your disk and didn't complete the installation then it is possible that this has messed with the library..!

I purchased Ap2 about one week before Ap3 was released. Didn't know release was coming or would have waited. Called Apple but they wouldn't do anything other than refer me back to the retailer I purchased from. I went back to that retailer and they tried to send me back to Apple :P Anyway, I explained my situation and they offered to install a copy of Ap3 for me at no charge since I had just purchased from them. They did so and gave me a license number to use. When I went to startup the Ap3 it asked for lic number. I entered the one I had but it didn't work. At that point I just decided to bag the whole thing and live with Ap2.

Now, as to which came first-the repair or the upgrade-unfortunately, both happened at same time. The shop that I bought the software from also did the repair and did the upgrade while it was in for repair.

How's that for not so simple an answer?

I tried a test this evening and moved my Aperture photo file to another computer that had a copy of Ap3 installed and running.

The first thing it wanted to do was upgrade my photos to work with AP3, which tells me that my aborted attempt at installing AP3 on my computer probably had not affected the file.

Once the pix were upgraded, everything opened just fine on the other computer. That was good news since it means my files are not corrupted.

I'm not sure what to make of this but have decided to go ahead an purchase AP3.

Kinda bugs me though (to put it mildly) that Apple has made no provision for users who had purchased AP2 within 30 days of the new release. Grrr....

Hi Chards

Sounds like the part installation of Ap3 did not corrupt the library files themselves, but the ability for Ap2 to read them properly?

I would back up/clone my system drive and then reinstall from scratch.

I believe Apple have a two-week unofficial policy whereby new products can be returned or the update is sent out. Not sure how this works for software though.

I'd recommend calling Apple Support again to see if they will help. It never hurts to call twice.. or twrice!

Cheers

Interestingly I went to open that file on the other computer last night and it glitched so I'm back to suspecting some type of corruption in the file itself. I'm going to try pulling a copy from TimeMachine and see what happens.

Hi Chards,

Glad to hear you have backed up your system using Time Machine!
