I was given Photoshop and will be taking a class in 2 weeks --but wanted to Play with it. How do I get a picture from I photo into the photoshop pane?

Hi Aurora and welcome to macProVideo.com!
If you want to try Photoshop, just drag the picture from iPhoto to your desktop and open this file with Photoshop.
You can also right click a photo in iPhoto and choose "Edit in external editor".
If you want to always edit your pictures in Photoshop from iPhoto, you can set this in iPhoto > Preferences > General > Edit Photo in...
