Old Television Effect

Hi,

I'm trying to achieve the effect of old television footage. I don't want to use "bad TV" because the look isn't right. I specifically want the bright areas to drive surrounding areas into darkness. Look at these photos and hopefully you'll see what I mean:

Although I actually want the video to be in color, this is the look I want.

Can you find the tools in the filters in FCP X?

Well, first of all, I'm not sure I'll be working with FCP X. But secondly, I'm not sure that alone will do it. Maybe if I make a negative of the image, filter out all but the darkest colors, blur it, set it to multiply, then take the original, filter out all but the brightest colors, set it to dodge, and place it on top of the multiplied image...

However, for economy and to make sure I don't miss any nuances, I was actually looking for an effect which does what I want automatically, if one exists.

I'll be working on HD, so I may be able to use extreme color ranges.

I'd start an FCP X Effects template in Motion, get it working there. Then you have an effect you can apply to clips in the future.

There are plenty of FCP X effects online for free and for pay if you look around. There are several "bad tv" and "bad film" effects around, all different.
