Keyboard shortcuts greatly enhance your speed and productivity in any application. In this tutorial, we'll take a look at ten productivity-enhancing keyboard shortcuts in Photoshop. The trick with keyboard shortcuts is remembering them, so be sure to grab a pad of sticky note paper and a pen! Here they are in no particular order, ten top Photoshop keyboard shortcuts!

Shortcut 1 - Toolbox Keystrokes

Every tool in Photoshop's toolbox has a single keystroke equivalent. This means that with the tap of a key, you can access your tools. Cool! To find out what a tool's keystroke shortcut is, just hover over it with the mouse for a moment until the yellow tooltip appears. The keystroke shortcut appears in brackets. To access tools hidden beneath other tools in the Toolbox, hold down the Shift key while tapping the keystroke shortcut.

Shortcut 2 - Tab and Shift+Tab

This is an easy one. Hit Tab to temporarily turn off the display of Photoshop's Toolbox, panels, and Options bar. This will give you much more screen space to work with. Hit Tab again to bring everything back. Hold down Shift and hit Tab to turn only the panels off.

Shortcut 3 - Option (Mac) or Alt (PC) to Reset Dialogs

If you've messed around in a dialog box and want to start over again, don't hit Cancel, just hold down Option(Mac) or Alt (PC) and that'll change the Cancel button to Reset.

Shortcut 4 - Move Fast with Color

Hitting the "X" key flips the Foreground and Background color swatches with one another, while hitting the "D" key reverts the colors back to their default -- black in the foreground and white in the background.

Shortcut 5 - Merge Down

Merge the current layer in the Layers panel with the one below it quickly by hitting Cmd+E (Mac) or Ctrl+E (PC).

Shortcut 6 - Control Brush Sizes

Use the open-square-bracket ("[") and close-square-bracket ("]") keys to increase and decrease the brush size for any of Photoshop's brush-based tools.

Shortcut 7 - Zoom with the Scroll Wheel

Hold down Cmd+Option (Mac) or Ctrl+Alt (PC) and use your mouse's scroll wheel to quickly zoom in and out.

Shortcut 8 - Navigate through Blending Modes

Hold down Option (Mac) or Alt (PC), then hold down Shift and use the "+" or "-" keys to scroll through the Blending Modes for the currently selected layer.

Shortcut 9 - Drag to Increase or Decrease Numeric Values

In any dialog box or panel that has a numeric field, hold down Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (PC), then drag on the value to increase or decrease it.

Shortcut 10 - Load Layer's Contents as a Selection

Load a layer as a selection by holding down Cmd (Mac) or Ctrl (PC) and clicking on the layer thumbnail in the Layers panel.

So there you are, my top ten Photoshop keyboard shortcuts. I hope you discovered a few cool new ways to work with Photoshop, and if I've done my job, your computer monitor is now covered in sticky notes to remind you of these awesome shortcuts!
