Martin Delaney

“Technical author, and one of the new-school's top Ableton educators, Martin Delaney is a master of Ableton Live. His books about Ableton Live are the de facto resource for people that want to learn this amazing audio program!”
Biography
By Martin Sitter
A few months ago I was talking to a friend at Ableton, discussing the possibilities of Ableton Live. "macProVideo.com should do an Ableton tutorial program," my friend told me, "and you should get Martin Delaney to do it!"
Martin is a technical author with long experience writing about laptop music. In fact, one of his books, Laptop Music (PC Publishing), is a great exploration of creating music on modern laptops and makes a good argument that in today's world of high power portable computers, your studio can be anywhere you and your laptop may roam.
Of course, it's his other book, Ableton Live 5 Tips & Tricks (PC Publishing), that really pushed Martin to the forefront of the Ableton Live community. This book remains one of the best selling Ableton guides on the market.
When not writing or producing videos for macProVideo.com, Martin is an avid performer, using Ableton Live and Arkaos VJ on stage to captivate crowds in and around his hometown of London, England.
He may also be found in his studio, using Ableton to create scores for documentaries (for example, Channel 4's 'Girl Kits,' which he also directed) and remix tracks for bands such as Scottish electro punks Motormark ('Note To Self').
Martin is a versatile and well-rounded audio producer, and we are extremely happy to have him here, at macProVideo.com!

The more I go back to Martin Delaney's tut to refresh & deepen my Live knowledge the more I appreciate it, he's not a great orator but a truly great Ableton expert even though it's about version 7 that I bought a while ago. It would be great if he laid down his know how with version 8, specially with setting up & playing with different midi controllers. He doesn't seem to have any serious rivals in that category that I've seen so far. Live is such an amazingly layered & flexible musical tool, it...

This tutorial really helped me get a headstart into Ableton - especially with the session view which was totally new to work with. Its also loaded with a lot of tips and tricks in most lessons. Martin drawls a little and IMHO, it could have been a little faster

I'm fascinated by Ableton Live & M. Delaney is a great expert but his teaching style might be too layed back for me, in his tone of voice there was not enough pointers to specifics , he slides though lessons evenly as if reading an instruction manual. He knows this app so well I'm sure he could teach Ableton in his sleep.

Hi,technically it's excellent but it would be superb if you were to give an example of producing a basic music track by using Simpler,operator,etc..This would be fun and very intuitive as at the moment I'm going backwards and forwards into ableton..It would make it sink in so much more if for ten-fifteen minutes one of you started to lay a track down from the beginning.obviously it doesn't need to be a club classic..your instructor on the tutorial is so knowledgeable but he sounds bored to death...

Like many others who have this product, I have the previous tutorial that Martin Delaney did. I have to say that I do tend to agree with another reviewer who commented on the rather discordant and tuneless content featured in these videos. However, I must also say that Martin has a comprehensive knowledge of Live and I really learnt a lot and that's what counts. Martin's style is very laid back and quintessentially English - it just takes a little getting used to. I am also from the UK...

I was originally afraid to get this tutorial because I thought it was going to be identical to the ableton live 6, but it was not, it was better. You people at macprovideo really know how to take care of your customers and the discounts you offer are a wonderful incentive to a wonderful product!! Thanks again Martin Delaney, BIG UP!!!

This video presents a good overview of the basic features of Live. There are some useful tips for more experienced users, however the narrator's presentation is rather monotone and boring. Even worse, the musical examples he plays while showing off Live's features are tediously repetitive, boring and out of tune with each other. Believe me, live can produce more than bleeps and blips.

A very good in depth rguide on how to use ableton, an in depth section on how to dj with it would have been useful as it only scratched the surface of this area. I'll have to look elsewhere for that, overall very good though.

Great tutorial. I am a novice in the digital production world and found this video to outstanding. I have watched lots of other tutorials and found this to be my favorite thus far. The lessons are broken down clearly and in the right durations. I look forward to checking out the Logic 8 101.

I didn't really enjoy this course very much.. I found the presentation style dull and the content wasn't nearly as good as the many other course (logic and Reason) that I have purchased. I think this could be improved.

I purchased this tutorial to learn Ableton Live. I have purchased 3 other tutorials from macprovideo.com (logic 7 and 8 and ESX24 advanced concepts) and I loved them. Unfortunately the Ableton Live tutorial was less than I expected compared to the logic tutorials. I was hoping to get more out of it about performance, the teacher seemed to be rehashing the same simple concepts over and over and never really got to the real concepts about controlling live in and live performance setting, the basic...

Always love your tutorials, how ever I find myself falling asleep to the ones with english accents, I end up skipping the ableton live lessons simply because i feel its dragging on, long pauses, sluring of words. Maybe its the radio producer in me, but that voice over is some what a drag. Thanks again. As asked feed back good or bad.

Very useful tutorial. I am new to live, and had some problems to use it. Ableton made a great job in usability, but the complexity and features of the software need to be handled. If you watch the whole tutorial you know almost everything about live 6. The structure of the video is very good. You can find the right film for your problem very often. On my wishlist is a tutorial about producing electronic music with ableton with an special chapter about using live with reason. That would be gr...

As a Systems Engineer, I touch alot of technology, and I know how frustrating it can be to stay abreast of all the different technologies; and I've tried many. Your video courses are both outstanding AND convenient. I find that they fit very comfortably into my busy schedule and continue to pique my curiosity with all these new little things I learn. I'm very impressed with your series, but Martin's style of teaching is excellent. It's just too bad he doesn't have a sense of humor ! (Just teas...

I find very hard to hear the sound of ableton devices on your tutorials, to be more precise i can perfectly hear Mr. Delaney voice but not what is doing with ableton, so is difficult to understand what happens when he changes settings to ableton devices... The tutorial started out great and clearly the tutor is enthusiastic about the application. As the tutorial went into greater detail about certain functions, the clips he chose to use could have been better at demonstrating the desired effect. Some of the audio sounds he manipulated were too abstract to see how they would fit in musically with a typical composition of popular music. Overall it was excellent and unlocked the application for me. Thank you and I will use your service with...

BRILLIANT BRILLIANT BRIALLIANT! Excellent tutorials that surpass abletons own in built ones. The value for money is outstanding and I was delighted to find that NED (their awesome edcation platform programme) updates itself so you get extra goodies arriving even after you have finished the course! With 2 books on the subject (2 more on the way) and numerous articles and performances, Martin Delaney really knows his way around Ableton Live. Delaney shows it ably in this tutorial, one that is both well-presented and deep with content. Delaney has a knack for getting to the point quickly and clearly, so I've often played excerpts from Ableton Live 101 for my sound design and music composition/production students. Whereas some other Ableton Live tutorials on the market fall well short of t...

I currently have 10 macProVideo tutorials. They are all excellent. This particular one really shows you all the amazing features of this application. Whether you're a DJ or "old school" (like me!), you'll definitely learn all you need to know to really get to grips with Live.
