“I write Apple's Courseware for Logic 7, Soundtrack Pro 2, & DVD Studio Pro. I also know the best Software Trainers in the world ... hmmm, I'm getting an idea ...”
Biography
Most people know me from the Apple Pro Training Series.
I started teaching in 2001, at the Vancouver Film School. There, I taught DVD-Video design and Audio Mastering.
During that period, I also began designing and authoring Apple's official courseware for Logic and DVD Studio Pro, in the Apple Pro Training Series.
In 2003 I left the Vancouver Film School to become Apple's Lead Trainer for Logic. In that capacity, I traveled to many of the world's premier universities and multimedia schools, training Professors and Instructors in the official "Apple Method" of teaching their applications (a method I designed, through my work creating Apple's courseware).
During that period, I started macProVideo.com and released our first DVD Studio Pro and Logic video-tutorials.
In 2005 I stopped teaching for Apple, and turned my focus entirely to macProVideo.com. While I continue to write courseware books for Apple, these days my focus is on video-based education.
I live by the principle that efficiently commanding your computer can create dramatic shifts in your life. Here's some examples ...
Software now gives everybody the ability to create, mix, and master music that sounds as good as songs on the radio. Video editors use Macs to make box-office hits. And happily, Apple users have been given a front row ticket to the show:
With an Apple computer, anyone can tell their story!
I created macProVideo.com to make the story-telling easier. Our tutorial videos show you how to use software through moving pictures, and sound. Learn quickly and then spend your time creating stories, instead of dreaming about them.
Welcome to macProVideo.com!

I've been involved with performing, recording, mastering, and processing audio in one form or another since 1968. From drumsticks to DAWs, I've seen and done quite a bit. I have all of the Logic videos. They are truly the key to your musical universes, trust me. These have stunning quality and instruction. The produces and instructors are obviously well above "expert" level, and these videos are simply amazing in their instructional value. I have never seen a better tutorial style or series conc...

Being relatively inexperienced in recording, Logic is a fairly heavy risk. I've tried other resources and felt confused. It has taken me two passes at Logic 101 to have it begin to make sense. This course has been very helpful. I'm ready now to go through the "hands on" stage, and I'll probably work through it again. Thanks for this excellent guide.

Once again Martin has delivered a perfect tutorial for understanding Logic. I have just purchased Logic Studio 9 and this is my first open door to audio work. Already I have gained clear understanding on the process of making music and how to approach the method of recording. An absolute must buy if you are new to Logic or even a seasoned user.

Logic 101 - Core Logic is a MUST for anyone beginning to use LOGIC. At first I was quite hesitant to buy any of the MACPROVIDEO range but after taking the plunge… I'm VERY glad I did. This video has helped me immensely towards understanding LOGIC to produce music. The video of great quality visually and the tutors explain ‘what they are doing’ & ‘how they do it’ in a very clear & concise manner, also I love the way MACPROVIDEO have broken down the tutorials into sections making it ...

Clear. Great coverage for getting started. My only disappointment was the large amount of time on the subject of sound in the beginning. Getting into editing soundwaves as the first chapter???? That's nuts. Felt like I was in a masterclass. Anyway, overall very helpful and nice job. Worth the money, which is the key element.

I feel this training will probably be used by a lot of people either new to computers or switchers from Windows. As such I felt the author over emphasized the possibility of someone gaining unauthorized access to their Mac. These kind of warnings belongs in the Security section of training but not in as many places as he put them. His over emphasis might lead to the feeling that the Mac is not as safe as it is. If he updates the training I hope he puts these warnings in the proper location...

I'd give this tutorial 3.5 stars. It was a great tutorial in many respects, and I especially learned a lot about setting up MIDI in the environment. The best part is that you will understand and learn how to use the Environment, and compared to other Environment tutorials, that's an accomplishment in itself. Still, sometimes Martin can speak quite fast and forget to slow down for those who aren't as sharp on their MIDI/Audio theory (me!). He may also skip over the occasional core concept, assum...

Best purchase decision I could have made. I was "getting by" pretty good with Logic, having switched over from ProTools, but didn't feel I was using the program to its full potential. I have only been able to watch the first few sections, and I love how detailed and simple it starts off. He's so clear with everything, it feels so easy to learn... so far! My one concern is that even though I've only watched about half of the sections of the 1st chapter, the subject matter seems to jump around in a way that seems a bit illogical, but perhaps that's because I don't know how it all ties in yet. I've never really had the patience to stick with tutorials. They sometimes bore me. I think the main difference with macProVideo, is the way you guys break each lesson down into short clips that are easy to go back to when you want to recall a specific topic. Bite Sized Info... I like that! As far as Logic 101? It took me through the basics, and showed me things I've overlooked in Logic. I enjoyed learning, and hope to learn more!

Found the tutorial quite useful but it did not deal with a few issues as clearly as I would have liked. E.G. Having been very happy with the Final Cut 6 101 I am equally UNhappy with the Logic 101 product. Logic is a dreadful piece of interface design to begin with with millions of little buttons and menus all over the place in seemingly arbitary positions. Your tutorial does nothing to explain or simplify this interface and goes straight into fast talking jargon instead giving an basic overview first. I got a lot out of this video. Martin is a great instructor. He does love the word 'instantiate'! Couple of notes: There were a few created 'objects' that are seen in the video but have no history. The one that comes to mind is in the LAYERS section where Martin mentions his XIO Synth. It's just there... without previous mention. On the topic of layers... It would be nice to see some ideas of how to organize objects on layers in more detail. Also... more of a Logic issue, it's very hard ...

I've only gotten through half of the training program, but so far, so good. It takes you through the basics methodically and is easy to follow, but I wished at some points that the trainor did not assume that the trainee already knows what is being talked about (for instance, I had trouble with what he meant about velocity; he didn't explain what it was exactly and just went on about velocity). Logic is not easy if you've not used a recording application before. I was pretty clueless when I first sat down with Logic Express, even with over 35 years of experience as a musician -- 23 of them as a gigging and recording professional --, two engineering degrees with 20 years of software development experience, and prior experience (some time ago) with MIDI recording on my old Mac. For all the testimonials I read regarding how "easy" it is to get started with Logic Express, I found the s...

So far, I've been enjoying the video. My only criticism is that some of it moves kind of fast. And what I would describe as the "asides" ("while we're at it, let me show you how to open the ________ from the keyboard shortcut") can be a bit distracting. I'm pretty much a total novice with this stuff and decided to plunge in and try to learn Logic rather than a simpler program like Garage Band. So I could probably be considered a remedial student as far as this stuff goes.

This is great stuff. I'd purchased Logic Pro 8 months ago, and was hoping that it would be easy to use. This started out really great. It was definitely worth the $45 to gain knowledge on something I had NO IDEA how to use. Only complaint is towards the end it started assuming the viewer already had knowledge in certain areas. The 'automating the mix' section was completely lost on me. Also, it just needs a chapter explaining how to use the EQ in more detail. I have never used an EQ of this style before and it was not explained how the funny digital graph interface works.

Great tutorial. Takes you through all you need to know to get you up and running with Logic Pro. Very thorough and systematic. Almost like having your own personal teacher on call 24/7. Note on N.E.D. 2.0: This program is still kinda buggy, most noteably it displays the "Black Hole Syndrome", where the video just disappears, and you're left with audio only. When I first purchased this tutorial it had a different name and it was very deceiving "Mastering Logic 8" but it was more an over view because it did not go as in-depth as I felt it could on alot of things that sets Logic 8 apart for other DAWs. For instance, the Logic Environment, Plugins with in the version 8 and mastering with Logic 8. Now I would think that the rebuttal to my statement would b...

A good tutorial if you are starting with Mac and even if you have a certain level to remember how a Mac works :-) I hope there will be more tutorial talking about Mail, Safari, Ichat and I tunes,.. that could be cool Martin! I was not thrilled with the order in which topics were discussed on this tutorial. Also, there could have been a bit more time or detail taken with the audio recording and set-up segments. The MIDI segments could also have been more detailed. I generally don't think enough consideration was taken for absolutely "first time" users of Logic or any type of digital recording set up; much is assumed. What is there is presented clearly, accurately, and for the most part effectively. I would not h...

Mastering DVD Studio Pro

Hello, I'm happy with my purchase. The price is good and the player works well. Something that most DVD tutorials could probably improve on is the subject detail of their indexes. As with all manuals, the quality of the index has direct bearing on how effectively the relevant information can be located. DVD tutorials do tend to require immersion in the whole package to learn details not necessarily apparent from the index.

this tutorial contained good information but I felt that its focus on the details of building individual voicings slighted the topics of most importance to me. I enjoyed this guide; the conversational tone and the interaction between two characters nicely counterpoints the switches between operating systems and helps bring forward similarities and differences between Mac OS X and Windows XP. I have been very happy with the tutorials and have nearly completed both. I am considering purchasing additional tutorials 303 and 202. We are a new studio growing from a home/project setup to a small commercial enterprise. We have migrated away from protools and committed largely to Logic. Hi Martin, Thank you so much for making the daunting task of getting up to speed on an application as rich and complex as LOGIC 8 feel like fun. The Logic 101 video pleasantly surprised me many times by thwarting my usual skepticism of such tutorials. Each time I would say to myself "This video is great but I am sure he won't cover XYZ"... sure enough you do cover "XYZ" (and much more) using fantastic and intuitive examples that are immediately applicable for a musician/composer. Clear, simple and direct. As a result, very enlightening. Even though I've been using logic ever since Emagic started it, there is always some thing you miss because there is so much packaged in Logic. Core Logic 8 should not be underestimated by any one! The difference between Logic 7 and 8 is pretty dramatic, in my opinion, and Core Logic 8 is really worth looking into. My one complaint is that Martin has a slight Mister Rogers style to his voice over work but he's still cool! Buy it!

Logic's Environment Explored
Jan 30, 2008
Hi, The other Logic tutorials I've seen have been BRILLIANT, really helpful and VERY focused on the real-world application of how things work and why... The video was good, relatively informative BUT overall, i was slightly disapointed... the main reason i bought this was to really understand what the environment is about AND to understand (with real life examples) of HOW TO UTILIZE and use it... for example: • Using the Multichannel ULTRABEAT, and how that routes the signal...I wa...

I'm moving to Logic from using Cubase for years. The 101 training video really helped in making the transition. I now know how to do things that I knew how to do in Cubase. Maybe even a bit more. This is my first try in using net video tutorials and I have to say that videos work a lot better than books. One point reducted because I felt that the instructor was stretching some things a bit too much. But I suppose that I'm a bit different client as I'm familiar with other DAW's already. Less expe...

This tutorial is at about the same level of the 101 course but goes into detail on how to make your own custom templates and buttons in DVDSP. I used to use iDVD for sending out quick client review copies, always fighting it and manually adjusting the templates with custom backgrounds, text styles, colors and such--and generally wasting a lot of time trying to trick "easy to use" software to do what I wanted to. Meanwhile, DVDSP was sitting in my kit the whole time, unused because it seemed s...

This training is great for a novus engineer. It teaches both Logic and the basics of engineering and sound. For experienced engineers, this training wastes a great deal of time on very basic things (eg. sine waves, phase cancellation, what digital converters do, etc.) Many engineers, who are very experienced with other DAWs, are now taking a look at Logic for the first time because of its new features, great sound quality and pricing. Therefore, you may want to include a summary section th...
