Paul Garay
“Paul is a master of Propellerhead Reason, with over four years of experience teaching the app. He is also a traveling presenter with Apple, teaching and demoing GarageBand and Logic to audiences across North America.”
Biography
By Martin Sitter
I first met Paul when I was teaching at the Vancouver Film School. Paul quickly became one of my best friends at the school, and when I started macProVideo.com, he was the first person I asked to contribute training to the site. Knowing his expertise teaching the program, I asked him to do Propellerhead Reason. It took over a year for me to finally convince him to come on board, but he's here now ... and I couldn't be more pleased!
Paul is a true musician. He started playing piano at the age of 4, and began performing in bands while attending high school. Shortly after school, he went on to tour professionally with several different recording acts across North America playing keyboards and singing.
In 1994, Paul decided to open his own studio and spent the next 6 years focusing on music production and digital audio recording. His production credits include work with a virtual who's who of west coast Canadian recording talent.
In 2000, Paul began instructing courses at the Vancouver Film School and was introduced to scoring for visual media. In particular, in 2004, Paul had some of his music appear in the television series Smallville".
You can also catch Paul at his web site, Inside home Recording, where you can pick up lots of hard won tips and tricks about recording in a typical home project studio.

This video tutorial starts out where 101 left off. I like that the video digs a little deeper into the effects and gives solid examples on how to use the FX in different situations (send, insert, etc). The vocoder section is easy to understand. I would like to see more videos of Paul digging even deeper into reason. The two videos you have just scratch the surface of what this powerful program can accomplish, I would like to see more on THOR, much much more! The RPG-8 , Matrix, Spider audio, NN...

As a beginner at home recording and new to GarageBand, I am glad I got this tutorial. Even though it is for GB-08, it is 100% applicable to GB-09. The basic interface looks different but the effects are identical. I am puzzled about why the Amp Simulation and Bass Amp features were left out of this tutorial since they were the only two items left on the Effects list. All in all, a great overview and a must have for the new user of GarageBand, especially at this price!!!

Coming from Garageband I was intimidated going into Logic Pro 8. I watched the demos of GB to Logic and was impressed with the processes used by the narrator. The audio quality difference from GB to Logic is astounding. There is a transition of acronyms that could use its own short video perhaps to set the pace, but over the various se...

The video itself is very good, I have passed the beginner level so the first part is a good repetition for me. My only remark would be that the "dock" in the movie window is totally unnecessary in my opinion. Why on earth do you do this when we're already having these wide screens which are shorter horizontally to begin with. I count in millimeters and the dock in the movie is taking up exactly 17 mm. IMHO this has no function whatsoever. Otherwise I find your instruction to be excel...

It is a great video. I would change only 2 things: 1 - There are too many parts. As example, we have like 3 or 4 movies about the same subject. I would merge them into one, so we could keep the same subject on one single part. 2 - Because of the reason I mencioned before, we spend too much time watching that introdutory part, saying "Learning something, from someone, 4:13 minutes". I think that interrupts the learning process, and then it should be avoided. I hope that helps somehow. Best...

Hi, the tutorial was great, especially the part about adding GB songs to Logic. I was having trouble with that. Can't wait for the videos to arrive. I have the manuals and they are good but video is much easier to understand. Paul was excellent too. I have a question. Does N.E.D. work in 9.2 ? I'd like to put the videos on my old imac and watch them from there while I have Logic open on my G5 (I'd rather not drag the G4 to my room as it is quite heavy) thanks a lot, Francis

The presentation is very clear and well-thought-out and Mr Garay has a great teaching voice, with a slightly humorous inflection. I learned more in the first half hour than I did in weeks of doodling around on my own. I look forward immensely to getting the Protools tutorial. Thank you all.

I have used GarageBand for a year now, and I am very far from discovering its limits as I am just a "for fun" user. I have been exposed to Logic Pro as part of my work and have found it much more complicated. This guide helped me understand Logic in a much better way than any of the included manuals, or even books I accessed through my library. This is a very good introduction to the Pro level applications. I recommend this guide for any switcher before any other tutorials (which I am watching n...

I had to learn Reason 3 quickly. Since I already own three other MacPro Videos, this Reason 101 was my one and only choice for a fast education. I was not disapointed. Paul is easy to understand and a great teacher. My only complaint is that the pause between lessons is too long. Some lessons are only a minute or two, and the pause in between is distracting.

I've looked at several manuals, both in book form and video, and this is by far the best. It's concise and clear, and best of all, you're always looking at the exact same display that you use. I learned everything I need to know with this video.

This is an excellent turorial video. The on-screen run through with friendly narration was a great way to learn how to use the programme, from basic understanding, to more advanced features. The only drawback was that I'm using an older version of GarageBand, so a number of features weren't available on my machine. I'll be upgrading soon though, so no real problem there. It also shows me what I'm missing! I'd recommend this to anyone who wants to learn how to use GarageBand without wading...

Unfortunately, I was unable to view much more than the first 5 tutorials of the 90 or so available. There is some sort of problem with my Windows Vista, video card, and quicktime. I find that the MacProVideos are a great way to learn about a programme without having to go through the long, and often tedious process of reading manuals, They take away the time consuming trial and error and practice that is often needed to cement knowledge and that also often results in gaps in knowledge, with important parts of a programme remaining undiscovered for a very long time.
