Steve Horelick
“Twice Emmy-nominated Steve H is a Logic Pro Master and industry-leading audio producer/performer. You might know him from TV's "Reading Rainbow" ... he scored every episode of that program.”
Biography
By Martin Sitter
Ever since I was a kid, the theme from TV's "Reading Rainbow" has stuck in my mind like a catch phrase.
"I can be anything!
Take a look, it's in a book -
Reading Rainbow."
While growing up, those first two lines became a mantra of mine ... and guess what? Steve Horelick wrote that theme song. He also scored all of the show's episodes. In fact, Steve's production credits include more than 350 TV episodes. And that's just the beginning ...
His film score for HBO's documentary "When It Was A Game" earned him an EMMY nomination. Other recognitions include New York Film Festival, GRAMMY, and several national advertising awards.
His original songs have been recorded by artists including: Chaka Khan, Bobby McFerrin, Peabo Bryson, Phoebe Snow and others.
As an Apple Certified Trainer, Steve combines 10 years of expertise in Logic with experience as a working composer/producer to show students insightful and inspiring techniques for making music.
When not busy composing for TV Steve divides his time between being our publisher at macProVideo, a volunteer firefighter, performing live electronic music and enjoying life with his wife and children.

A brilliant series. I'm giving a 4-star and would like to repeat Rupak's comment from May 18th. Bouncing process in more detail would be very helpful. Specifically, the bouncing of mixed tracks in the arrange area to an audio file to be sent for Mastering in Logic. It is only implied in the course that this is done before the Mastering process and I'm still unclear on it. Is there a way to master the bounced track within the same Logic project that was used to mix? But it's still a brillian...

Flex Time Editing is a function in Logic that allows you to sync up, Quantize, rythymic audio parts like guitars or banjos to the timing grid, and also to tighten up solo or harmony vocals and lead parts. Steve H. and his assistant Igor explain the Flex Time in 30 video presentations and they do a very good job. If you are like me, you will need to follow along slowly with your own recording project. I think I missed a couple of important points, like "Phase Locked Flexing..." and "Q-Referen...

"...no longer contemplating buying any 3rd party drum machine software.." This line from another review here is also how I feel. I bought this CBT because I quickly needed a fast introduction to Mastering with Logic. Never having used a DAW before and not being a native speaker, I found this course very well structured and just right to learn the basics and get an idea where to start. The fact that there is so many good sounds within UltraBeat, caused me to purchase the tutorial. What seemed "too hard-basket", has now given me a whole lot more to work with. All because these tutorials have become available. Who wants to read a book or do a 12 week course on how to use a plugin? Just show me a tutorial & I'm happy - Thanks! ...

I just finished this tutorial and thought I'd share my opinion for anyone considering watching this. I wasn't originally interested in the ES2, but instead one of the other tutorials (EXS24, Sculpture). When trying to decide which one to buy over the weekend, I read the Overview and Outline pages on each. The Overview stated that this is probably the best Logic tutorial ever. I usually don't buy into marketing gimmick, but watched the previews briefly and noticed that there is SYNTHESIS THEOR...

Excellent tutorial. Its delivered at a pace that sometimes challenges the attention span (but no doubt perfect for absolute newbies) and it's a bit overwrought on the bedside–chat-gee whiz-let's-nurture-you-through-this tone ( the jokes sound scripted and are delivered all too earnestly…) but hey, those are relatively nit picky. The big stuff is there: solid knowledge, a genuinely amiable tone that makes it easy to keep watching and a good variety of examples. Yep. Two thumbs up.

I found myself in the position to finish my own composed music without any real additionally help. Composing classical music combined with electronic elements is truly very difficult to get mastered and usually one has to go into a Pro Studio to get this job done. Steve is one of my favorite tutors. He really builds up your knowledge by showing hands-on examples. Everything in this tutorial is shown by example, hands-on within the software. Steve mobilizes many tools so you can also see for example in a wave window what is going on to the waveform of the sound. A very inspiring and helpful tutorial. As a teacher, engineer and musician I´m familiar with most of the issues. But things are so brilliantly explained here, that I become a better teacher: F.ex explaining sample and bit rate, compressor attack settings and much more....... The Multipressor...This is where I often run wild. I could use e few more practical examples, tips and tricks, to get a good result. I´ll most certainly go for more tutorials! JanD

The great thing about Logic is that it caters for those starting out on music production right up to the most sophisticated technicians at the highest end of the industry - like Steve H. Each tutorial in the Logic series provides highly detailed elements of the, in my view, the very best of DAWs. The real beauty is that you can be as simple or as sophisticated as you wish. I would say that Flex Editing is at the higher end of the scale but if you wish to add this aspect of music production...

it's a good tutorial perhaps a bit too long in the historical part. It could be a good thing that you keep in mind logic is a huge software needing a precise approach of any feature. For exemple the part of mastering a complete acoustic set without virtual instruments, the way to go from a multitrack arrange to the final stereo or surround bounce is too short (using a multi mic take with phases problemes). How can we use the pre and post listening functions, are there fixed rules for an order o...

He makes technical info that could be overwhelming easy to absorb, while still conveying the essence of the subject. His pacing is really good, and his style entertaining. The video itself is really well produced and the use of highlighting, notes, icons, transitions, etc adds to the overall experience. Each segment gives you the, "I can't wait to watch the next ...

As a musician by heart, I wanted to share my views of this Logic's Mastering Toolbox by Mr. Steve Horelick. Up Till now I have note seen in a dvd formate a better list of tools put together by "a Master", with great integrity and passion especially putting forth, a energy that en-spires and encourages the sound engineer, the student, the novice, and of course the serious musician. Great experience conveyed within a careful plan that translates into Brilliance! Thank for Must Know Mastering! I ...

I had a basic understanding of how synths worked prior to purchasing logic but was unsure of the ES2 as there are so many options with it. This tutorial was really helpful to understand the working of the ES2 and also provided more info on synths that I didn't know about. Put simply, what an amazing tutorial and presented extreamly well by Steve H! I've never really thought about all that was involved in the mastering process before but this tutorial is a real eye opener for me and I think that anyone working with audio would benefit from viewing this, whether you have been in the game for years or hours! Great work macprovideo once again, well worth the money :)

I have to say I was looking forward to this release but I have found it disappointing. Potential problems are shown but are not rectified before the tutorial moves on. There is far too much rambling but whereas what i really want to know is how to improve my mastering skills in Logic. A track is being edited, but when it comes to a final mix for instance one has a multitude of audio tracks in the timeline, so, one wonders, even for a preliminary example, why use the one track scenario when it is...

When Steve H talks...I listen, and with good reason. macProVideo tutorials always come jammed full of detailed explanations and more importantly reasons why we might want to apply certain technics. Before watching this my approach to mastering was very much trial and error, but now I have a much firmer grasp of the concepts behind mastering and a vastly improved understanding of how to apply compression and EQ to a mix. 1st rate!

explains the mysteries of vital audio tools very well to simplify the process and using hands-on real time examples (as all your tutorials) really opens the information up. All of your tutorials lack just one thing; an index. Sometimes I get to a point and think, "ahh, thats in a tutorial somewhere" I then waste all the time your tutorials save me in Logic looking for a small piece of info, how to close something or similary stupid! Seems a bit old this one so it won't make a 5!

really enjoyed the videos. Found them very helpful and although some may find the "first principles" approach unhelpful, for me it gave me a ggod place to start with the plug ins, most of which i have already been using for about a year. One irritation however was the use of the logic 7 style of plug in. I am using logic pro 8 and the styling is quite different, particularly the multipressor (which was the plug-in upon which my purchase was aimed). Thank you

I have not yet completed this tutorial but so far it is excellent. After Martin Sitter's 101 tutorial I couldn't wait to keep going so I downloaded 201. I wasn't aware of grid mapping and it completely blew my mind. As a musician I prefer to play musically as opposed to real time (a metronome) which makes recording midi very difficult or at least it use to. I've been using Pro Tools 50 - 60 hours a week for 9 years. Before that the AMS Audiophile. Before that The Synclavier D to D system. Your videos have helped me get over the hump in learning Logic. Steve H's 201 was the best one yet, with many example I put directly to use on a project I did completely in Logic. I wish there was more information about editing audio, such as you'd use doing post production. I know that's not Logic's strong point, so I'd be interested in that area. It may already ...

Logic's Plug-Ins: Unplugged
Nov 30, 2008
This video contains so many valuable tips and hints I was scribbling notes constantly while watching. My only suggestion would be to perhaps extend the section on equalization with more examples of how sounds can be tweaked for different mixes. This said, I found precisely that content in the "Mixing R&B" and "Mixing electronica" videos, which tie together a lot of the theory from the other videos. This is a great way to learn. Thank you!

Once again, another really excellent video from Steve Horelick! You will realize how flexible and powerful ES2 is, but also how complex it is with many non-obvious features like filter chaining. Steve covers all these points clearly. If you already know analog synth, the description on Vector alone is worth the admission, and not to mention side-chaining. I thought I knew a lot about analog synths, but this has further deepened the synth programming skills for me just not on ES2 but also other a...

Amazing tutorial! I used to skip over the ES2 and go straight for the ES1 because there were just too many knobs, faders, and parameters to get a grasp of everything. I couldn't even figure out how to mix the oscillators -- the ES2's default preset has the mixing triangle controlled by the vectors. But now I even understand what I just said =) Steve's done a great job breaking down EVERY SINGLE option on the ES2. Like the tutorial, like I actually always do. It's easy, he really takes time to explain things. Maybe the only thing missing is a quick recap of the most important subjects, at the end of the tutorial. Ofcourse, you can always look back when the tutorial is finished, but a quick overview would be the perfect ending. This way all subjects really stick into the mind. GOOD: I thought the geography, modulator and via sections to be extremely helpful. I took screenshots of the VIA rules and the parameter hierarchy (global, pattern, step, etc) Very useful. The new things i learned that i didn't pick up in the manual (i'm a manual reader) were the ease of constructing new presets from lots of disparate other presets, voices and sequencers ..that is GOLD!! This was a very good tutorial. Steve Horelick did a very good job of breaking down a very complex instrument and keeping things digestible while not being patronizing. His friendly and humourous approach helped a great deal. I found I was much less intimidated by the ES 2 after watching his tutorial, and I felt much more in control. Perhaps the only criticism I would offer is that perhaps some more time spent on characterizing some of the sounds that individual waves or combinations of waves ...

Take a few styles of music (rock, country, jazz, whatever) and build a beat to fit each type. As it is, it stands as a great tutorial on Ultrabeat.

First of all, I am glad there is ANYTHING on Logic Studio. As we all know, the interface is entirely new, and that makes almost all previous tutorials almost worthless for the beginner. I've bought, downloaded and loved every available Logic tutorial produced by MacProVideo.com so far, so when the Tips'n'Tricks started, there was no question that I would subscribe. The first installment is brilliant, and I can hardly wait for more. Just one thing... the presenter (can't remember his name)... is he recording these with a family asleep in the next room? He speaks so softly I'm resisting the urge to fall into a deep sleep!

I just completed the Ultrabeat tutorial yesterday. Quality is more than excellent as usual! I already had a good grasp of this Logic's plugin and even then, I learned a few new tricks. The chapter 28 about chopping up audio is alone worth the price of the tutorial.

I had been putting off Ultrabeat for quite awhile due to the seemingly complicated interface. After reaching the end of the road with my purchased drum interface - I decided to go back to Logic to see what it had to offer. Fortunately, Steve's tutorial came out just in time! Through watching the video, I instantly went from seeing Ultrabeat as a confusing plug-in to realizing that this is a full-on beat machine! Thanks to Steve and everyone else involved in making this video! It came at j...

Following in the tradition of his previous tutorials Steve has demystified Ultrabeat. This tutorial explains in plain terms the full capabilities of this amazing Drum Synth / Sample player! Ultrabeat has gone from my least to my most used Logic synth now and I would strongly recommend this tutorial to every Logic user! On a scale of 1 -10 I give this one a 100! Thanks Steve!

Just finished watching this tutorial. If, like me, you've been put off by Ultrabeat's rather unfriendly and complicated interface, you'll soon be whizzing around this amazing drum machine with Steve's help. Beautifully recorded, concise and witty - I thoroughly recommend this tutorial to you. MacProVideo have scored top marks again - well done Steve and Martin!!!

As Martin Sitter would say, "How cool is that?". These tutorials are indespensible for anyone who uses Logic. I had been writing and recording music (mostly ProTools along with other DAW's and analog gear) for many years. I thought learning Logic would be a cakewalk (no pun intended). Had I found these training videos when I first got Logic, it would have saved me weeks of frustration and floundering. I was so impressed by the Logic Bundle that I revisited this site and downloaded t...

Logic just has too many features to grasp by wading through the two 600 page manuals supplied with the software! Yet another clearly explained tutorial that has made Logic seem so much easier to use! Most other suppliers of tutorials leave you wanting more information but with these set everything seems so much clearer!

A blessing from heaven. These tutorials needs to be owned by everyone in the business including those of us with college degrees in the business. I WOULD PAY 5 TIMES MORE FOR THE SAME PRODUCT IF ASKED. On point and to the point. Simple language down to the finest detail. Just awesome. Now Logic will for ever be part of my life after quite a few successful years with Protools, cubase, DP etc... keep it up. Rating: 5 X x

Holy cow! Sculpture is intense! If you are a synth tweaker you have found the holy grail. But it's light years above and beyond LFO's, oscillators, and ADSR's. That is why you must get this tutorial. Steve Horelick did a fabulous job with this tutorial. A must for Logic users.

Logic's Plug-Ins: Unplugged
May 17, 2006
The hype is real, folks! I've been playing with these plug-ins since I got Logic 7 over a year ago, learning the presets and basic functions, but not really understanding what I'm doing. Watching this tutorial I found myself continually going, "Wow--this plug-in can do that?" And I'm FINALLY getting a decent handle on how those compression and limiting compressors work! Well done!

I must say this tutorial is absolutely amazing. I have been using login since version 3 and I have never seen a more clear and concise tutorial on Logic! All aspects are well explained and they are really entertaining to watch as well. If your new to Logic this series is a must have to get you up and running in record time. Im suggesting it to all my friends who use Logic immediately. Great job Steve and MacPro Video!

I learned a lot from LogicPlugins Unpluged. I have been diddle'n with compressors for years not knowing what I the heck I was doing. Now I know what those darn adjustments actually do. I also appreciate the little tricks and tips you add. I also bought Logic Complete and between the two I have learned more in a few weeks than all the manuals I have ever read.

Found the "Sound and how its made" video package very interesting and educational. There were a lot of things that I knew but never really knew why(if you know what I mean) the video confirmed a lot of these things to me in a different way. I liked the quick easy to understand and take in tutorials and look forward to the Plugins vids.

Learning about the theoretical aspects of sound can be quite overwhelming; what with all the jargon that tends to go with it. These tutorials put an end to all that by approaching the subject from a practical point of view. A gentle learning curve ensures that the videos are easy to follow. Real world examples of how the various techniques are employed mean that the knowledge gained can be put to practical use. Another bonus is that these tutorials are allot of fun. Steve's sense of humor r...

Logic's Plug-Ins: Unplugged
Feb 18, 2006
It's not always obvious to find your way around in Logic multiple plug-ins. It can be a bit scarry too to go into all the reading to understand what is what. So if you want to have a good idea of what you can do with every plug-in, this tutorial is a very good place to start. It gives practical exemples , it's very visual and it's done with a little humour that makes it even easyer to digest. Thanks Steve, Martin and all the team. You are doing a very helpfull job.

Logic's Plug-Ins: Unplugged
Feb 17, 2006
What a great job Steve has done with this course, taking the guesswork out of logics plug-ins. There’s a ton of plug-ins in logic, and it can seem like a mind field. Once you realize that a lot of the plug-ins share similar controls (Compressor, gates, expander etc) things don’t seem so daunting. There are some great real world examples like fixing a bass guitar part using Compression removing sibilance from a vocal using the DeEssor the list goes on. Steve’s delivery is clear and very we...

Logic's Plug-Ins: Unplugged
Feb 4, 2006
Having purchased the complete set of Logic tutorials from macprovideo, I was expecting nothing less than another excellent tutorial. I can honestly say, I wasn't disappointed. You can read and read about the theory associated with sound processing plug-ins, but that is only half the battle. The real challenge (for me at any rate) is knowing how to use these tools in a practical, useful way. This is where the tutorial really comes into its own. Steve does a wonderful job of explaining ho...

Simply the best I have tried or found, and believe me when I say that I have looked. Only thing that could be better would be having these guys in my studio. I have purchased the following full versions for Logic Pro, DVD Studio Pro, 3Final cut Pro, Sound, Plugins unplugged and have not once felt my time or money ill spent.

Logic's Plug-Ins: Unplugged
Jan 31, 2006
I like this set of tutorials a lot. The tutorials introduce the basic plugins needed for mastering a song (compression, limiting, expanding, delay, reverb), as well as the effects plugins (vocoder, bitcrusher, etc). For newcomers to Logic, the control surfaces of the plugins can look intimidating and are not always intuitive. Steve does a great job in explaining the function and structure of the plugins. By watching the tutorials you get a good feeling of how to set the plugin's parameters p...

You guys at MacProVideo seem to be able to find the most interesting instructors! I was able to listen to the Plug-ins Videos in one sitting. There was too much information to absorb, so I will be returning to the videos again and again. Kudos to Steve Horelick for creating an intensely interesting training experience. I am recommending this series to all my Logic buddies. I own lots of books, but, as we know, a picture is worth a thousand words, so, this set of videos is worth millions of them....
