Steve Horelick
“Twice Emmy-nominated Steve Horelick is a Logic Pro Master and industry-leading audio producer. You might know him from TV's "Reading Rainbow" ... he scored every episode of that program. He's also one of the most entertaining educators around!”
Biography
By Martin Sitter
Ever since I was a kid, the theme from TV's "Reading Rainbow" has stuck in my mind like a catch phrase.
"I can be anything!
Take a look, it's in a book -
Reading Rainbow."
While growing up, those first two lines became a matra of mine ... and guess what? Steve Horelick wrote that theme song. He also scored all of the show's episodes. In fact, Steve's production credits include more than 350 TV episodes. And that's just the beginning ...
His film score for HBO's documentary "When It Was A Game" earned him an EMMY nomination. Other recognitions include New York Film Festival, GRAMMY, and several national advertising awards.
His original songs have been recorded by artists including: Chaka Khan, Bobby McFerrin, Peabo Bryson, Phoebe Snow and others.
As an Apple Certified Trainer, Steve combines 10 years of expertise in Notator/Logic with experience as a working composer/producer to show students insightful and inspiring techniques for making music.
When not busy composing for TV Steve divides his time between teaching songwriting at City College in NY, being a volunteer firefighter, playing softball and enjoying life with his wife, children and various pets.

nice to have logic on 64-bit. But this new version is not as streamlined as it should be. For instance. If you load a movie in logic 64 bit and try to export audio to movie you will see that the export function is gone . Don't know why? And of course, we have to wait till all the plugs from other companies are in 64 bit to feel the real power.

As a recent convert to the DAW world, my approach as a composer and arranger has mostly been to present projects before they are adequately produced. Good music should be enough, right? But this is the real world. All well and good until you start adding a lot of instruments. I needed to get up to speed quickly with mixing and mastering, and Steve H's no-nonsense, cut-to-the-chase method for the fine art of mixing did just that. I was surprised by the emphasis on compressors over EQ, with EQ app...

The great thing about Logic is that it caters for those starting out on music production right up to the most sophisticated technicians at the highest end of the industry - like Steve H. Each tutorial in the Logic series provides highly detailed elements of the, in my view, the very best of DAWs. The real beauty is that you can be as simple or as sophisticated as you wish. Three hours of lessons in a classroom, one is liable to forget a lot of stuff. Then one goes home, alone,no teacher arround to fill up the missing gaps that one finds when trying to recall the lessons. Now,MacProVideo has provided me with teachers 24 hours a day every day. There is nothing else to say, except that every musician should know about MacProVideo. Greetings from, Alberto.

ES2 Exposed
Jun 1, 2009
All of Steve H’s courses have been good but this one takes the biscuit. When I first tried to use the ES2 I found the presets disappointing and the faceplate confusing so I ignored it for ages. Then I started experimenting and getting some interesting results. However, now I’ve been watching this tutorial I’m really beginning to get it, and not just the ES2, but the principles of synthesis and sound-design more generally. This is probably the best thing I’ve used from MacProVideo and I c...

Good intro to mastering tools with some concrete examples. Would have like a bit more emphasis on eq'ing mixes, dealing with specific mastering problems (vocals, drum balancing, etc.). Nice to have sample song, but having a couple of other examples of different types of material would help to broaden the learning.

Fascinating and illuminating video. A great introduction to the subject and well explained and presented. Well worth the money, though I felt the section on EQ could have been elaborated on a little. Otherwise an excellent video. I hope MAC Pro video keeps producing more on this subject.

Logic's Mastering Toolbox
May 31, 2009
it's a good tutorial perhaps a bit too long in the historical part. It could be a good thing that you keep in mind logic is a huge software needing a precise approach of any feature. For exemple the part of mastering a complete acoustic set without virtual instruments, the way to go from a multitrack arrange to the final stereo or surround bounce is too short (using a multi mic take with phases problemes). How can we use the pre and post listening functions, are there fixed rules for an order o...

I'm totally impressed by the professional quality of teachings I find on your Logic tutorials, amazing! The same with Ableton & GarageBand. The approach is thourough & exhaustive to the point that I didn't find better elsewhere. The learning curve of Tips & Tricks saves one from trying to reinvente the wheel, specially when one's time & energy is devoted to art as a priority. Five stars from me.

this is quite a complicated subject but is well illustrated with graphics and aural examples. sometimes though i wish he would give us a little more time to compare before and after the effect before speaking again as changes to the sound can be quite subtle and to the untrained ear it is not always obvious.

I've just gotten through my first look at the Mastering Overview. It has cleared up several concepts and words I did not have a handle on. Very good examples of how things work, conceptually. This tutorial excels and is up to the usual high standards now well established with MacProVideo. Steve Horelick is a master of his subject and delivers his tutorials in such an easy to understand manner that iron out what are very complex concepts. The graphic content within this tutorial are most impressive and highly informative. His relaxed manner is coupled with an infectious enthusiasm. I own every logic training video from macPro and I was concerned that I wouldn't learn much from 401. I was wrong, Steve H did a great job of diving deep into the "how" it's done from the emotional progression of a song to the tools used to polish a mix. As always, macPro delivers value.

Very good instructional overall. That tune got stuck in my head as well. Couple of points though. When A/Bing audio concepts I would leverage the onscreen info more and not chat as much. EXCELLENT!! Much needed and long overdue treatment of the esoteric subject of mastering. The videos provided a GREAT snapshot of the history of mastering as well as making the topic of bit rates, headroom, etc very easy to understand. A great start for anyone to really understand the art of mastering, as opposed to just slamming a plug-in preset on the mix to make it loud and overcompressed and calling it done! Primo work guys at MacPro!!!!

This is the best mastering tutorial I have ever come across. I would recommend it to non-logic users, as well. I have to say I was looking forward to this release but I have found it disappointing. Potential problems are shown but are not rectified before the tutorial moves on. There is far too much rambling but whereas what i really want to know is how to improve my mastering skills in Logic. When Steve H talks...I listen, and with good reason. macProVideo tutorials always come jammed full of detailed explanations and more importantly reasons why we might want to apply certain technics. Hi. I'm honestly not often compelled to write a review but I had to make an exception for this tutorial. Mastering has always been one of the most difficult stages of finishing for me. I was completely new to synthesizers and the ES2. This is a great intro. Logic's Plug-Ins: Unplugged
Apr 5, 2009
explains the mysteries of vital audio tools very well to simplify the process and using hands-on real time examples (as all your tutorials) really opens the information up. All of your tutorials lack just one thing; an index. Sometimes I get to a point and think, "ahh, thats in a tutorial somewhere" I then waste all the time your tutorials save me in Logic looking for a small piece of info, how to close something or similary stupid! Seems a bit old this one so it won't make a 5!

Logic's Plug-Ins: Unplugged
Apr 5, 2009
really enjoyed the videos. Found them very helpful and although some may find the "first principles" approach unhelpful, for me it gave me a ggod place to start with the plug ins, most of which i have already been using for about a year. One irritation however was the use of the logic 7 style of plug in. I am using logic pro 8 and the styling is quite different, particularly the multipressor (which was the plug-in upon which my purchase was aimed). Thank you

I switched from Cubase on windows to Logic on mac, and I was dragging my feet. The Steve H class broke the ice and got things moving for me. ES2 Exposed
Mar 4, 2009
Fantastic tutorial! I really enjoyed how it taught the fundamentals of synthesis along with how to apply this knowledge to Logic's ES2. You guys have fantastic tutorials and great customer service. My only suggestion... I often have to keep pausing your tutorials to write down what is being said. And with so much good info, I honestly get writers-cramp and it slows me down. If you could include some kind of summary/reference document for each tutorial (pdf maybe?), that would be ~really...

I have not yet completed this tutorial but so far it is excellent. After Martin Sitter's 101 tutorial I couldn't wait to keep going so I downloaded 201. I wasn't aware of grid mapping and it completely blew my mind. As a musician I prefer to play musically as opposed to real time (a metronome) which makes recording midi very difficult or at least it use to. I love that I don't have to compromise the sound of my recordings in order to add midi instruments. Steve H really takes his time to explain...

Sculpture looks, and is, complicated. A very daunting synth. But Steve shows you how to go about using it effectively. To have access, to what appears, to me, to be some of the finest Logic minds in the business, for this amount of money, is simply awesome. These TNT tutorials really plant the seed for some amazing creative possibilities, especially in regards to the (until now) dreaded ENVIRONMENT! Can't wait for the next installment. Great work guys!

A little treat each month. Logic is full of little nooks and crannies and this series addresses a number of these. I like the pace (a little bit at a time) and I like the freedom this format gives to Steve H to cover some of the esoterica of Logic. The organisation, pace, and delivery of the tutorials is very good, as is usual for MacProVideo.com products. Most useful (to me) were the videos on side chaining, layering, and the playable EQ. I watched the others with interest and may yet act...

The first episode of TNT2 has just been posted and I am, as usual, very impressed. I am now a veteran MacProVideo customer and I have to say I have yet to be disappointed. Steve Horelick manages to put across complex tutorials in the simplest of terms although I have to say that I am not an expert on midi. However, Tips and Tricks has given me the bug and I have just bought my first midi keyboard so wish me luck! No one should have any hesitation in subscribing to MacProVideo tutorials. Th...

I've been a Logic user for about 5 years. I use it in my job everyday. I mostly taught myself so I'm always interested in learning new things about Logic to help my work flow and open up creative flow. Anyway I'm excited about all the things I've learned by watching these tutorials. They've answered quite a few questions I've long had. but couldn't even find in the manual.

I've watched all the Logic training videos, including the TNT series, and I wasn't sure whether the depth of content in this series would differentiate it from the other tutorials. I needn't have worried. This Master Class video lives up to its name. Steve covers a lot of fresh material and makes the difficult easy to understand in his inimitable style. It's all good, but PDC, the Transform window, and Beat Mapping alone make it worth it. Highly recommended.

The video tutorial has taught me more in 2 days about Ultrabeat than 6 months with the Logic manual. This is the best way to learn, by WATCHING an expert. You cannot get this from a book. The video is broken down into easy to follow and comprehensive sections and is presented with passion. I like this so much that I'm going to buy all the Logic videos. I've packed the Logic manuals away.

A great video showing the ins and outs of ultrabeat. I never knew the flexibility of this instrument. For me, the audio was very low. I had to crank up the volume to hear the voices and sounds that were being tweeked. Some aspects were a little too technical for me since I am not too keen on oscillators and modulators. Overall a great video. I am now more comfortable using this instrument as opposed to being scared to even want to take the time to try it.

This was a very good tutorial. Steve Horelick did a very good job of breaking down a very complex instrument and keeping things digestible while not being patronizing. His friendly and humourous approach helped a great deal. I found I was much less intimidated by the ES 2 after watching his tutorial, and I felt much more in control. Perhaps the only criticism I would offer is that perhaps some more time spent on characterizing some of the sounds that individual waves or combinations of waves ...

As I have purchased many other Logic tutorials, I was a little hesitant to get this one. After all, how different could it be? I am really glad I decided to go ahead and get it. So appropriately named. This really exposes and demystifies the ES2. I had no idea how powerful this engine is. Steve H. does it again. The tutorials in this series on ES2 move through this synth app in a well-ordered and sensible progression. But the ES2 is a complicated beast - and I found that its complexities outweigh its capabilities. Kudos to the folks at MacProVideo for creating a great library of videos. I have purchased several of your training videos - mainly for Logic and Reason. As a hobbyist these videos are well-organized, concise and enjoyable. Logic's Plug-Ins: Unplugged
Jan 21, 2008
My only complaint is that it didn't cover Logic 8. Aside from that it was a very good tutorial. I specifically like the added information - not only the basics of how the plugins work, but how they are used and tips and scenarios for using them in production.

This is a good tutorial, but I have to be honest - I wish more had been covered. There is a lot of information in relation to how pink (and white) noise are affected, and this is very good information presented in Steve's inimitable way making things clear to see and easy to understand, but it would have been much better had it also contained examples of practical applications of the same concepts. Some practical applications are given later in the tutorial - I wish it had been so from the beg...

The Tips & Tricks tutorial is an original way to learn Logic: I like the way, once a month, I get a new tutorial on a topic I might never have thought of. It's like a nice monthly surprise that forces me to think outside the box. I recommend it highly to advanced users

This tutorial rocks! Delivered in the trademark, enthusiastic and comedy stylings of Steve H, (and of course, Egor) you can't fail to be drawn in by the massive amount of sound sculpting and down right outrageous tweaking possibilities this synth has to offer. Another in a long line of must see tutorials. Great job!

I really enjoy this series of tutorials. I like the fact that they are released in installments and i look forward to them. Not every month is relevant to the way i work, but i'm happy with that, You never know when something i skim over now becomes the tip i need in the future. And some months are right up my alley in terms of how i work. Great little series

Between the tutorials and the forum, I find the MacProVideo tutorials to be invaluable when it comes to wrapping my head around such an advanced music operating system as Logic Studio . Especially with so many mysterious rabbits' holes leading somehow toward wonderland if you can just solve the riddles. Conceptually, coming from the old school of recording and live performing - i couldn't grasp some of the larger concepts for electronic tempo based music recording - It seemed limke I was dyslexi...

Before getting to know Macprovideo.com, Logic Audio was an incredible difficult program to learn. After trying Logic 7 101, I was surprised how easy it became for me. Then I bought all tutorials related to Logic, also this most recent one, ES2 Expose. Steve H. and Martin S. do together an amazing job and I am a huge fan. Thank you guys.

Top marks again for the overall presentation and content. This tutorial covers and impressive range of information, providing a good working knowledge of what to use and how to use it. My only reservation is that there is so much to cover that some of the sections are, necessarily, brief. I would have paid for two separate tutorials that each go into greater depth. This said, Logic 202 is by far the most helpful guidance I have come across in this area - thanks, Steve!

As usual, excellent production and logical(!) progression through the tutorial. The 'Sound Workshop' section is a great idea - more of this kind of thing would be very welcome. Presented in Steve's usual friendly manner, there is a wealth of information here, and most of the sections merit re-viewings to consolidate it. As a newcomer to synth programming, this was an enormous help.

This tutorial is a great fundamental lesson on sound and how it works. It is not too technical for people like me, but still does an excellent job in gaining an understand and getting it! Thank you, Steve Horelick for making this tutorial fun and easy to understand for boneheads like me. Could you perhaps do a tutorial on song arrangement and mixing or mastering with electronic music like drum and bass. If you present it like SOUND, then there no stopping me. HAHA!

Excellent, clear and insightful guide to ultrabeat - really got me up and running quickly with the basic functions and has got me exploring the more advanced features as well. Highly recommended for anyone who is a bit daunted by the crammed interface and wants it demystified. Its really shown me what an ultrabeast ultrabeat can be... Thanks.

What I have watched so far of Logic TNT is very good. I am a very experienced user (Logic owner since 1995) but I still get useful tricks from Steve & co. My only criticism would be that I expected more movies per month. For September, one can exclude the 2 Cameo folders as these were available for free download anyway. Same for October - only about 12 minutes of new material. I have posted a suggestion at the forums that certain presets and/or channel strips that are used by instructors c...

I think the tutorials are first rate. I like the slightly light-hearted approach and the summary at the end of each section. I hope the future tutorials will feature transformers and multi instruments as I am sure I could get more out of these features. They prove that seeing something done is a much better way of learning than reading a book!
