All of Steve H’s courses have been good but this one takes the biscuit. When I first tried to use the ES2 I found the presets disappointing and the faceplate confusing so I ignored it for ages. Then I started experimenting and getting some interesting results. However, now I’ve been watching this tutorial I’m really beginning to get it, and not just the ES2, but the principles of synthesis and sound-design more generally. This is probably the best thing I’ve used from MacProVideo and I can’t recommend it highly enough.

I had a basic understanding of how synths worked prior to purchasing logic but was unsure of the ES2 as there are so many options with it. This tutorial was really helpful to understand the working of the ES2 and also provided more info on synths that I didn't know about. Steve H is brilliant at getting the facts over and he adds a bit of humour to the tutorials which makes the learning fun. Just how it should be...

I was completely new to synthesizers and the ES2.

This is a great intro. I feel very confident about how to use the ES2, and am comfortable with other synthesizers I've encountered since watching this.

I highly recommend it if you want to learn some of the hidden functionality of the ES2 or if you just want a primer on synthesizers.

FYI, I bought the software oscilloscope (3rd party plug in) used in the lessons & would follow along while watching. It's pretty nice software.

Takes you right through the interface and the controls in a logical and detailed way, but could go further with more musical examples of how individual controllers impact sound design. Would like to see more on side-chaining and mid control

Description

Steve H. and his trusty assistant Igor are at it again ... creating incredible tutorials, that is! This tutorial is as entertaining as it is educational. By mixing clever audio comedy with facts about synthesis and tone creation, Steve has made what is possibly the best Logic tutorial ever! You might think that's a big statement, but watch this tutorial and you'll understand what I mean ...

This tutorial is as much a lesson in the theory of synthesis as it is an deep exploration of the ES2. Drawing on years of sound design experience, Steve shows you what subtractive , FM, and Pulse Width synthesis really is. As an incredible bonus, steve demonstrates how these waves actually look using a digital oscilloscope, so you can see and hear the differences between these popular forms of synthesis.

Mixed into the tutorial are several bonus sound design workshops which show you how to build common sounds, from the ground up using the ES2's oscillators, filters and other audio functions. The ES2 is an incredible sound design tool, and the included workshops will not only show you what's possible, but also provide ideas and inspiration for producing your own sounds.

But best of all, this tutorial contains a deep exploration of Vector synthesis. Vector synthesis is a method of automating sounds to change over time, and it's a hidden treasure in the ES2 that almost nobody uses. With Vector Synthesis, you can truly define your sounds by making interesting and musical timbres that nobody has herd before. Vector synthesis is a sound designer's dream, and Steve H. shows exactly how it works in this tutorial.
