Mastering is the most misunderstood part of the audio production chain! If you need big sound, this video will show you how it's done ...
Finally, the tutorial we've all been waiting for - Logic's Mastering Toolbox!
Watch as our Star Logic trainer, Steve H, demonstrates deep and fundamental concepts in the proper use of plugins to Master your tracks like a pro. But that's not all ...
This program starts with an overview of the history of mastering, and how the unique trade of the "Mastering Technician" grew as audio transitioned from wax cylinders, to the phonograph, tape, compact disc, and now digital files like MP3s.
With a solid understanding of the history, you will next move on to the present day and learn how to master great sounding music in Logic. Along the way, you'll explore all of the important mastering plugins in Logic, including compressors, limiters, and EQ. But this isn't just a simple "point-and-explain" tutorial ... Steve provides comprehensive detail not only on how to use these powerful Mastering DSP plugins, but also WHY you want to use them to achieve certain effects with your sound.
If you need to make BIG audio, this tutorial will show you the way. Drawing on over 30 years of experience as an audio engineer, and drawing on incredible input from his stable of industry friends (including Grammy award winning Mastering Technicians like Phil Magnotti), Steve H has provided macProVideo.com with his Magnum Opus tutorial on Mastering with Logic.
This tutorial is MANDATORY viewing for anyone creating music in Logic.

This tutorial is absolutely top of the bill! It will help me fulfill my dreams in music production. The song really sucks, but actually that doesn't matter at all!
Great, great great,my mind is still spinning but I'll nail it down. Only criticism would be I'd love to be taken through the 'tidy' up process, the stuff you do off screen, the tweeking if you like, I know it's down to the golden ears but it'd be cool to know more what those ears see(hear) or don't see(hear)!I'm just a humble muso realising you've got to understand at least the basics in this world and I rely on my ears a lot, but don't always know how to get the sound that's in my head into a f...
If you have Logic, you really should watch this tutorial. Though it focuses on Mastering, you can apply a lot of the principles to recording and mixing as well. This is a high quality video, which Steve obviously put a lot of effort into. As always, his teaching style makes it easy to learn the material.
Another great job by Steve H. Not that I'm now a master at Mastering now by any means. But at least I now understand the basics. BTW, great explanation of compressors, limiters, and metering.
Steve Horelick is the master. Period. I don´t know anybody else who is able to explain complex stuff so understandable. Great tutorial on a complex topic. Worth every cent.
As a recent convert to the DAW world, my approach as a composer and arranger has mostly been to present projects before they are adequately produced. Good music should be enough, right? But this is the real world. All well and good until you start adding a lot of instruments. I needed to get up to speed quickly with mixing and mastering, and Steve H's no-nonsense, cut-to-the-chase method for the fine art of mixing did just that. I was surprised by the emphasis on compressors over EQ, with EQ app...
Nice Job. Very helpful and straightforward. Could be priced more reasonable. Peace.
Another fantastic Steve H tutorial and highly recommended. This video covered all of the musical concepts and functionality related to finalizing and mastering a project in Logic. Excellent stuff!
Very well made tutorial on basic of mastering and sound engineering. Steve Horelick has a very clear way of explaining the most complicated terms by comparing them with every day life examples. Logic's essential mastering plug-ins are detailed. Very useful tutorial regardless of the type of music you are producing. Great Help!
A very inspiring and helpful tutorial. As a teacher, engineer and musician I´m familiar with most of the issues. But things are so brilliantly explained here, that I become a better teacher: F.ex explaining sample and bit rate, compressor attack settings and much more....... The Multipressor...This is where I often run wild. I could use e few more practical examples, tips and tricks, to get a good result. I´ll most certainly go for more tutorials! JanD
Steve H is an amazing teacher & master of his craft, he makes complicated procedures & technical explanations simple, this is my definition of genius. I believe if you want to become a master learn from a master. I just found mine. I've seen other mastering courses but none as well done as this one. I'm sticking all the way with you Steve, you are definitely a big star in the mastering field. I hope you get all your deserved credits for your excellent work.
Amazing tutorial! I can now fix many of the issues I have been struggling with in the mastering process. The explanation of musical concept applied to Logic Plug-In is well worth the price of admission.
Mastering was always the mystical phase of producing that I thought I could never touch. But after watching this tutorial I mastered a 6 song demo CD for a coworkers band. Wow what a difference from their unmastered version. Thanks Macpro Video and Steve H. for this great, easy to understand, and confidence building tutorial.
I loved this tutorial. It gave me from the basic principles of mastering to technique of mastering in Logic.
Really really good stuff! Very detailed explanation to the basic idea what mastering does and how it works. With the help of this tutorial you get the very same results at mastering your tracks like some professional audio engineers who are specialised at it over years!!! I missed only the following part, if you have some frequency bands missing or very quiet in your spectrum, how to fix it so that you have it sounds rounder and warmer. I can advise this tutorial to everyone who wants to produ...
I really enjoyed your tutorial, it covered all the bases for me. I now fully appreciate the real value of "Wheels". Something I had not given much thought to up to this point.
VERY informative and enlightening! I never really understood how the compressor/limiter worked. Understanding of these two tools is absolutely essential for mastering. Thanx to this video my recordings have never sounded better. Also, the tips regarding the extra features in the Gain tool helped tremendously with recording my vocals using two Mics. And I now use the meter as an integral part of my mastering. I recommend the Mastering video to every Logic user wanting to get the absolute best sou...
As usual, Steve H is an excellent teacher. Great examples; clear instructions; and depth of knowledge. No surprise, then, that I found Logic 401 to be another sound investment from macProVideo. As I was watching the tuts, I kept dipping into my latest project (which I had open simultaneously in Logic) to apply what Steve H was saying. And the improvement in that one song alone was well worth the price of admission. Thanks Steve H and macProVideo for once again making my life as a music maker ...
Great explanations that are relevant to all areas of mastering, not just for Logic users. Great stuff
Thanks Steve. Very linear and thorough presentation of the mastering process. Hope N.E.D. was cool with that.
Well this tutorial was really great, and Informative. I really learned alot, and was like I didn't realize you could do that in Logic. It really does teach you the toolkit of mastering thoroughly. My only complaint was the song "Wheels" was a little annoying after the second time, but you can't please everyone. Good Job steve, and MacProvideo, keep the great tutorials coming, and MACPROVIDEO's tutorials are really the best. This was the first one I actually watched from beginning to end.
Very good tutorial, easy to understand and follow. Good use of real world examples. This Tutorial will aid anyone with an interest in mastering.
I've purchased all the Logic Pro 8 series, which is a testament to how much I enjoy these tutorials. I have yet to be disappointed. Very informative, clear, precise and often amusing. Allows me to do in a few hours what might take weeks and months to figure out alone. Thanks Macpro and best of luck in the future!
A very in depth look at the process and science of mastering. Very helpful!
Steve did it again! He's taking tutorials to the next level. In this tutorial you can undestand each step of mastering so clearly with lot of graphics and simple examples. This info results priceless just go for it. Ill recomend it as a MPV remix contest finalist. Congratulations Steve "Maestro" Horelick!
Very informative tutorial. Really helped me understand and clarify Logics plugins. I recommend this to all Logic users wanting to refine their tracks to an even higher standard. Very good indeed.
I got a lot out of this one Martin. I have remastered at least 10 of my original songs using concepts presented and I must say they have come out with more punch.
Congratulation to Steve Horlick for this amazing tutorial. Absolutely recommendable.
Awesome video's all i have purchased are great,i can go on and on,just fab. However guys this is where i'm at with logic. Martin i have one of your logic books and have viewed endless hours of tutorials online and just cant what i personally really need! What i have found is great on how to use logic, with 10 years paid dj work and my complete lack of musical skill i still cant make a proper structured house track(like Joey Youngman). The sort of video's i would purchase from mpv would be how to...
Fantastic! I found the answer to a good number of questions that were torturing my mind. I lent a lot. The quality of my music has dramatically improved as a result of watching this tutorial. Great teacher! Thank you guys.
The Logic 401 Mastering Toolbox was an awesome tutorial! Steve H gives great advise on Mastering with one of the most powerful DAW's on the market today. As a mixing engineer I'm always looking for ways to improve on my techniques and this is a great investment. I recommend it to anyone wanting to learn more about the art of Mastering with Logic Pro...
hi guys i think its great their is not much in the way of this subject and it seems you guys nailed it
This Video is excellant. It demystified the entire mastering process for me and gave me the full confidence to start applying it to all of my music. There was more information in here then there was in my school for recording engineering.
Three hours of lessons in a classroom, one is liable to forget a lot of stuff. Then one goes home, alone,no teacher arround to fill up the missing gaps that one finds when trying to recall the lessons. Now,MacProVideo has provided me with teachers 24 hours a day every day. There is nothing else to say, except that every musician should know about MacProVideo. Greetings from, Alberto.
As usual, Steve Horelik created a very usefull tutorial. Not only for Logic users. Bravo !
It's an excellent crash mastering and mixing course... regardless if you're using Logic or another DAW. I definitely recommend it!
Good intro to mastering tools with some concrete examples. Would have like a bit more emphasis on eq'ing mixes, dealing with specific mastering problems (vocals, drum balancing, etc.). Nice to have sample song, but having a couple of other examples of different types of material would help to broaden the learning.
Overall - fantastic! Loved the practical examples that were given, especially in relation to the gain plugin, dither, linear phase vs minimal phase EQ, and the multimeter. I'll definitely be saving my pocket money toward more of these tutorials. Great Job!
Fascinating and illuminating video. A great introduction to the subject and well explained and presented. Well worth the money, though I felt the section on EQ could have been elaborated on a little. Otherwise an excellent video. I hope MAC Pro video keeps producing more on this subject.
it's a good tutorial perhaps a bit too long in the historical part. It could be a good thing that you keep in mind logic is a huge software needing a precise approach of any feature. For exemple the part of mastering a complete acoustic set without virtual instruments, the way to go from a multitrack arrange to the final stereo or surround bounce is too short (using a multi mic take with phases problemes). How can we use the pre and post listening functions, are there fixed rules for an order o...
I'm totally impressed by the professional quality of teachings I find on your Logic tutorials, amazing! The same with Ableton & GarageBand. The approach is thourough & exhaustive to the point that I didn't find better elsewhere. The learning curve of Tips & Tricks saves one from trying to reinvente the wheel, specially when one's time & energy is devoted to art as a priority. Five stars from me.
this is quite a complicated subject but is well illustrated with graphics and aural examples. sometimes though i wish he would give us a little more time to compare before and after the effect before speaking again as changes to the sound can be quite subtle and to the untrained ear it is not always obvious.
I almost watched the whole thing in one sitting! It's just good fundamental mastering knowledge shared with us in this tutorial! You did it again Steve!!! Thanks.
This tutorial is a goldmine. The best thing about it is the way that Steve H demystifies the various elements of mastering and makes them easy to understand and apply, without dumbing-down. Highly recommended.
I've just gotten through my first look at the Mastering Overview. It has cleared up several concepts and words I did not have a handle on. Very good examples of how things work, conceptually. I will really use this along side finalizing the work I'm doing in Logic. The concepts will be valuable when using Pro Tools, too.
I always learn more than I think I will with your videos. Keep up the good work! Now I have to go and watch all the videos again.
Excellent and very helpful video. As an "extreme hobbyist", I have played around with digital recording for years, but was wasting much time doing things the wrong way! This video only took a few hours to watch but packed a great deal of helpful information into that short time. A must have item for anyone who wants to start to utilize Logic's potential.
This tutorial excels and is up to the usual high standards now well established with MacProVideo. Steve Horelick is a master of his subject and delivers his tutorials in such an easy to understand manner that iron out what are very complex concepts. The graphic content within this tutorial are most impressive and highly informative. His relaxed manner is coupled with an infectious enthusiasm. Indeed, I had little or no understanding of mastering before purchasing this tutorial. Frank...
I own every logic training video from macPro and I was concerned that I wouldn't learn much from 401. I was wrong, Steve H did a great job of diving deep into the "how" it's done from the emotional progression of a song to the tools used to polish a mix. As always, macPro delivers value.
Logic is a huge program, I've learned advanced concepts, and hidden features from the logic series.
This is one of the best yet. Very good, well presented and well organized. Thanks Steve H. for a great tutorial!
I found this to be a great product. Not only is the instructions presented in a no nonesense fashion, he goes into great detail to show practical uses and applications of the tools. I found this product very useful and it has saved me lots of time and research. Thanks for another great product!
If I can learn one or two good tips from a tutorial, it is worth my time and money. If I learn more than that, the tutorial is well worth my time and money. This tutorial was well, well worth it! Great job, guys, as usual! Please, please keep the training coming!
Very good instructional overall. That tune got stuck in my head as well. Couple of points though. When A/Bing audio concepts I would leverage the onscreen info more and not chat as much. A/B more than once as well so we can really hear the difference. Other than that I feel it was worth the money and picked up some very useful information. Thanks Steve
I have to hype this one up because I feel that it was truly worth of every penny. Everything was done in Logic unlike in some other tutorials and the level of professionalism and pedagogic skills here are of very high standards.
A terrific treatment. I watched it once, then listened to it in the car to reinforce the vast amount of useful info conveyed. The visuals were strong enough to "play" in my memory as I drove. Great job. I would like more of these higher level tutorials for Logic.
Very helpfull tutorial,good explanations..highly recommended
EXCELLENT!! Much needed and long overdue treatment of the esoteric subject of mastering. The videos provided a GREAT snapshot of the history of mastering as well as making the topic of bit rates, headroom, etc very easy to understand. A great start for anyone to really understand the art of mastering, as opposed to just slamming a plug-in preset on the mix to make it loud and overcompressed and calling it done! Primo work guys at MacPro!!!!
Martin, I've purchased many of your training videos, including for Logic, Motion, and Final Cut, and I have to say, I love 'em all. I have to say, I truly appreciate the way your new NED browser works...it's a joy and easy to use. In addition to more advanced Logic Pro tutorials, I'd love to see you produce a few titles on Luxology's Modo...an incredible 3D content tool. Cheers, Bob.
This is the best mastering tutorial I have ever come across. I would recommend it to non-logic users, as well. I really appreciated the advanced topics such as the demonstration and explanation of how Logic's linear phase eq is different from the channel eq. Although you never really explained when it would be appropriate to use the linear phase eq over the channel EQ. I felt you could have spent more time on the multiband EQ. I still feel like I'm at the "trial and error" phase of usin...
Excellent and thank you very much I learnt a lot. However, I would pay twice as much money for a producer masterclass on any form of electronic music. eg. how to make a trance/progressive house song from start to finish.
Dear MPV sincerely I didn't have the time yet to go through the new tutorial. I could only watch the first three lessons and ... well I can say that they are REALLY good. I'm studing also elettroacoustic music on very specific and scientific huge books (to use with Max/Msp) but nobody still explained to me the Bit Depth wiich such a clarity and wonderfull metaphoric evidence. So...welcome to this new tuorial, Steve, and thank you all for your really precious work. BTW, I didn't have the tim...
Steve H did a great job of condensing such a tremendous amount of info on a subject so deep into very palatable clips. He makes technical info that could be overwhelming easy to absorb, while still conveying the essence of the subject. His pacing is really good, and his style entertaining. The video itself is really well produced and the use of highlighting, notes, icons, transitions, etc adds to the overall experience. Each segment gives you the, "I can't wait to watch the next ...
As a musician by heart, I wanted to share my views of this Logic's Mastering Toolbox by Mr. Steve Horelick. Up Till now I have note seen in a dvd formate a better list of tools put together by "a Master", with great integrity and passion especially putting forth, a energy that en-spires and encourages the sound engineer, the student, the novice, and of course the serious musician. Great experience conveyed within a careful plan that translates into Brilliance! Thank for Must Know Mastering! I ...
Great job, really cleared up plug-ins and mixing "tips"! Can't wait to absorb this info(watch again & again) and put it to use.THANKS
One of the best tutorials I have ever had the pleasure of listening to. Easy to understand and entertaining with it. For me the plugins especially compression and EQ were the only part of Logic that I didn't really understand, but I do now. Thanks
Put simply, what an amazing tutorial and presented extreamly well by Steve H! I've never really thought about all that was involved in the mastering process before but this tutorial is a real eye opener for me and I think that anyone working with audio would benefit from viewing this, whether you have been in the game for years or hours! Great work macprovideo once again, well worth the money :)
I have to say I was looking forward to this release but I have found it disappointing. Potential problems are shown but are not rectified before the tutorial moves on. There is far too much rambling but whereas what i really want to know is how to improve my mastering skills in Logic. A track is being edited, but when it comes to a final mix for instance one has a multitude of audio tracks in the timeline, so, one wonders, even for a preliminary example, why use the one track scenario when it is...
Steve's style is warm, welcoming but crucially it's all substance too.He de-mystifies.That's what he does. Plus..I couldn't resist strumming along to the Wheels song. Great tutorial.
This has to be 1 of the best tutorials I've ever had!!!! Steve H is a guru when it comes to making you understand with his great examples with such clarity! The approach made it very easy to absorb and comprehend the art of mastering in Logic, in practical terms. Please keep in this approach coming, I can't wait for the next one ---BRAVO STEVE H!!!!
Steve h has done it again! Covering really nicely all the important things when your a mastering with Logic. Examples are made with good taste and it really gives you a new ideas and ways to work with your sound...
great stuff. luv it. thank you for doing a great job. and it's alot of fun:>
As all your tutorials has been interesting and educational and I've enjoyed it.
I found this video to be very informative, and easy to understand. Thanks
Hi macProVideo, i downloaded this new tutorial, thanks for this great work, this video is worth $ for $ Rudi Intercool rEc. http://www.supersonixs.com
This is really a GREAT tutorial. It is very didactic (I like the more modern way to explain things), very clair. The subject is just what I needed. I would like to have some explanations to master voices recordings too... Thank you! Philippe
I like a lot the presentation of the mastering overview of more than half an hour, it's a very good idea. I hope to find it also in future tutorials. And as mentioned in the preview, it's not only for Logic users. There are a lot of important and common subjects, it doesn't matter which DAW you use.
When Steve H talks...I listen, and with good reason. macProVideo tutorials always come jammed full of detailed explanations and more importantly reasons why we might want to apply certain technics. Before watching this my approach to mastering was very much trial and error, but now I have a much firmer grasp of the concepts behind mastering and a vastly improved understanding of how to apply compression and EQ to a mix. 1st rate!
It's amazing how you can work for years with a "working knowledge" of something, not realizing that there are many little gaps in your understanding. The "Mastering Toolkit has filled so many of those gaps that I am stunned. Thanks Steve and the MaxProVideo Team! Glen.
Hi. I'm honestly not often compelled to write a review but I had to make an exception for this tutorial. Mastering has always been one of the most difficult stages of finishing for me. This tutorial shows in amazing detail every aspect of the mastering process, including some very informative historical tidbits on audio. I would highly recommend it to anyone mixing or mastering in any of today's DAWS, specially if you're working in Logic 8.
Just excellent!!! Thanks a lot for this wonderful tutorial. Mastering has always been a big secret for me - until now (theoretically - now I need to do a lot of projects with that knowledge in my head). I´v learned sooo much. Seems I have to update to Logic Pro now ;-) I really need that multipressor... Marco
In the immortal words of Britney Spears, "Oops, He's Done It Again!" Yet another cracking tutorial from Mr. Steve H. Four years ago, when we first started using Logic, Mastering always seemed to be a closely guarded secret between the chosen few and a couple of Druids. Steve breaks it all down, unravels many of the mysteries and seeming complexities in his usual witty, informative and laid back style. Our debt to you Steve continues to widen. Can't thank you enough... Now, where are ...
