Learn The Foundation of Synthesis from synth master Marc Doty and support the educational activities of the Bob Moog Foundation all at the same time...
In this first course in the 6-part series on the Foundation of Synthesis: The Synthesis of Synthesis, Bob Moog Foundation lead educator, Marc Doty, introduces you to the basic concepts of the physics of sound. Here you'll learn all about the two foundational ingredients of sound and synthesis, frequency and amplitude, and how they interact in myriads of ways to create every aspect of what makes sound... SOUND!!
From there, Marc takes you on a journey through the history of electronic music. You'll see how some of electronic music's earliest 20th century inventions, like Thaddeus Cahill's Teleharmonium, or the Ondes Martenot, though decades ahead of their time, were the cornerstones of the future of music! He ends up this course with an animated timeline of electronic music that puts everything about electronic music into historical perspective.
Throughout this series, Marc demonstrates the science of sound with informative animations and hands-on demonstrations of his collection of classic synths from many different designers! It’s great to see how these fantastic instruments deploy their unique sonic technologies.
Bob Moog was an early pioneer and inventor of voltage controlled analog synthesizers. He revolutionized the music industry and his ideas, inventions and musical instruments have dominated the sound of music for more than 30 years. Aside from being an innovator, Dr. Bob was an outspoken advocate of education. The Bob Moog Foundation, created by his daughter, Michelle Moog-Kousa, continues his legacy with Dr. Bob's SoundSchool, the preservation of his inventions and the development of the Moogseum – the only museum of its kind dedicated to the advancement of sonic education. We hope you will help support the BMF's efforts by watching these courses with the knowledge that a large portion of the proceeds go to support their awesome efforts!
So sit back, hit the play button, and begin your education in the Foundation of Synthesis with Marc Doty, and the Bob Moog Foundation. Be sure to watch all 6 of the BMF's courses on filters, modulation, oscillators and more!

A very solid overview on the history of synthesizers, as well as how sound works, and a brief brush on the different components and types of synthesis. As someone who has some experience with synthesizers, some of the information was a little redundant to me, but all in all, it is well worth the time to watch.
I am glad that the first MPV course on synthesis covers creating music electronically. The historical timeline of synthesis machine progress is good information to understand. I feel like knowing the basics of synthesis is as fundamental to my role as a music producer as knowing music theory. Looking forward to the more advanced synthesis courses!
This is a fantastic work, more than a tutorial this presentation is a great compendium of technological break thru creations and amazing inventors that shape the history of electronic instruments.
great introduction to the synthesis. it is more like a narration of all the relevant music instruments like theremin, novachord etc. really good in depth knowledge of the speaker and understandable.
Great course - helps to appreciate the developments that led to modern synthesizers.
Awesome. I particularly liked the explanation of how sound travels through the air and into your ear drums; i.e. how sound waves are produced. Dealing with oscillators and synthesis makes a lot more sense now.
A captivating course explaining how sound works and a detailed history of synthesis over the last hundred years. This course gave me a welcome insight into individual engineers, technological advancements and breakthrough instruments over the preceding decades.
A well rounded, well constructed, lively introduction to the subject matter of synthesis. Just what I was looking for!
Very good tutorial. I learnt synthesizer history with a lot of interest and without annoying stuff that usually came with historical course :). I was always curious and forced to press next to watch a new video.
I've always been Fascinated with Synthesizers, after watching this whole series, I can now look at most Synthesizers and have a basic knowledge on how they work and a foundation to manipulating them. Marks passions for synthesis really shine through in these tutorial, I recommend these series to anyone whose new to synthesis like myself and want to really Dig in and get some knowledge about Synthesis.
A really nice introduction to synthesis. A very easily understood presentation with a lot of interesting history. Very inspirational!
The history of synthesis was an interesting concept to learn about. We have come along way with advances in technology and continue to push forward.
Excellent tutorial that super well explains the basics of sound in a non scientific way.
This was a pretty cool watch! Learned a few things.. I think I'll check out the series. I hope they will be more technique based (rather than historical like this).. but was a cool watch..
Excellent introduction to the history of how the synthesizer came to be. Don't expect to learn much about synthesis from this tutorial however.
An simple yet interesting description of what synthesis is and a brief history of music synthesis. I would have loved to hear the sounds of the historical equipment, like the telharmonium.
Another great tutorial. I've been working with synths for yrs but had never knew the history behind its development. This course will help understand synths in a new way. Watch it!
Great introduction to music Synthesis! It might be missing more audio examples, or at least links to where we can get an idea of the music that was (and is) made using this technology.
Precise, concise, well narrated, well-explained. For anyone who either wants a refresher or wishes to discover what sound is, you won't find better courses than this one.
really interesting background of synthesis and great for understanding how it all works... worth watching...
Fantastic explanation of where synths came from. It's so much easier to understand what you're doing. When you understand the basics of how it all started.
This was just brilliant! Informative and very well presented. I never knew the history of the synth was so interesting.
Just watched this first series & its truly amazing. Very detailed and informative and explains years of history leading to the Synthesizer. Great job with this series. Looking forward to seeing the others!
