Final Cut Pro X, with its easy-to-use, freeform timeline, is truly revolutionary. However, with new ideas come new challenges and tools. This in-depth editing tutorial by expert editor Michael Wohl, dives beneath the “Magnetic” timeline’s surface to show you FCP X’s many incredibly powerful editing modes and tools. Get this tutorial to learn all about the new, Advanced Editing Techniques in Final Cut Pro X.
*** Updated for FCP X 10.0.6 ***
After watching Michael Wohl’s Final Cut Pro X 103: Editing In The Magnetic Timeline tutorial, you probably think you’re ready to cut video—well, not...quite...yet! The truth is: you have just begun to scratch the FCP X surface!
In this Advanced Editing Techniques tutorial, the acclaimed Michael Wohl directs his editorial laser beam on the got-to-know essentials of editing in FCP X and it all begins with the art of trimming edits. Just as a sculptor carefully chips away at a block of marble to create a masterpiece, editors, too, cut and trim their edits to help reveal the story locked inside. The concepts you will learn in this Michael Wohl masterpiece will help you transform your first cut into a highly polished Final Cut.
As this tutorial unfolds, Michael explains many different kinds of edits and how to use FCP X’s arsenal of tools to achieve incredible results. He covers Ripple, Roll, and Split and Slide techniques. The Precision Editor and Trim Tool are also explained in detail. He shows how you can trim from the keyboard, and how to use numerical trimming and advanced keyboard shortcuts to help streamline your workflow.
Next we delve into “Auditions” which is one the coolest new features in Final Cut Pro X. Imagine that you have several different versions of a shot inside a given scene. The Auditions feature allows you to combine these various shots in a single “audition clip” that you can dynamically switch between shots, on the fly, as your scene is playing! From there, Michael dives into secondary storylines and the powerful FCP X feature of editing of complex compound clips.
This Advanced Editing Techniques tutorial is a must-view collection of videos that focuses like a laser on Final Cut Pro X’s awesome new editing toolkit! So sit in with master Michael Wohl, macProVideo.com’s Start trainer and get the knowledge you need to sharpen your Final Cut Pro X editing skills!

Well done, very informative, explained very nicely, not to long, which is really a good feature
Great Course! breaks everything down and makes it really easy to understand all of the elements. Thank!
Michael does it again. Even as someone who has been working with video for ten years, I am learning great tips and shortcuts to help me in my workflow as I delve into the newest version of Final Cut Pro. As I work on projects, it is easy to go back and find what I need in these videos as they are clearly laid out, labeled, and succinct. Great stuff.
Excellent presentation techniques, based on a thorough knowledge of the software and a sound analysis of what the learner needs to know. I purchased this first one as a trial - since then I have purchased three more, and plan to go on to purchase the Motion set
Michael presents the new editing tools in an easy way. I enjoyed the update on the short cuts and the Precision Editor parts. This tutorial has something for everybody.
Highly recommended training for anyone seriously interested in becoming proficient in Final Cut Pro. Excellent presentation makes it easy to learn.

dude! you just blew my mind. I can't wait to learn more!
Excellent tutorial, I found it most helpful as I am new to FCP X
I have downloaded and watch the FCP X videos 103--107 and couldn't be more happy. For the price of these tutorials and how much I've learned it would have cost me three times as much on books and tool a year or long. Michael does a really great job of keeping you engaged and the tutorials are well thought out. After watching 5 tutorials so far I only have one complaint and it's with "Advanced Editing Techniques". I think it should have been much long and have gone far more in depth. There are secondary shorelines and how and why to use them and so on. Or I would be just as happy to have a new tutorial "Advanced Editing Techniques 2" that delves much deeper (please Michael).
I have been editing a 12 song / music video DVD for a band from Burmah using FC Express. I bought FCPX and must say that I am amazed! Excellent tutorials from Wohl. His voice and style are very relieving on the ears and eyes. Pleasant and rewarding, this video is a must! PS. I really don´t know what all the fuss is about regarding FCPX versus FCP 7. This a wonderful piece of software and I am sure it will only get better - and it´s 64Bit!
I love this tutorial series! "But you gave it only three stars Craig!" Yes and for one very important reason! There is no "Using Keyframes" section!?!? (Did I miss it?) In FCP7 using KFrames was ok, but not very intuitive. After using FCPX for a week now it seems as though Key Framing is even more unintuitive. I could be wrong but please produce a section on Key Framing and include some basics on how Key Frames control time and how you have to set them to control both the begin and stop of an effect! the audio Key Framing section was excellent! Overall I give this series 4+ stars and will most surely give it 5! Keep up the good work Mike!!!
Final Cut Pro X is fast! That's what becomes apparent in this tutorial, how fast things can be done. There's a lot of information in this tutorial and Michael Wohl delivers everything with a kind of clipped precision, that is that things are quickly but clearly explained! He points out some of FCPX's problems but also is persuasive about it's advantages too! This is a well made tutorial, informative and to the point with that added rye humor we've come to expect from Mr Wohl. Thanks man for another great show!!
Superb series! Wohl is a wonderful teacher - a perfect balance of detail and the overall picture. This should be the definitive instructional set for some time to come. I am new to FCP (came over from Camtasia) and I'm eagerly grabbing up each video as it comes out!
