Learn deep mixing skills from a legend of the R&B music scene, David Isaac!
R&B is a soulful genre, and there's few people with more soul than David Isaac. David has spent decades Engineering and Producing for many of the world's biggest R&B artists, including Luther Vandross, Marcus Miller, Michael Jackson, and many, many more A-List performers.
In this 3 hour tutorial video, you'll learn deep secrets about the art of mixing while benefiting from the years of experience that David brings to the table. Topics like radio-ready vocal treatments, EQ'ing rhodes & bass, and mixing your drums to create space, depth, and dimension, are all covered hear.
But the best part of this tutorial is the inside tips and knowledge that David drops along the way. Listening to a veteran of the Motown scene describe why certain mix concepts have come to be is like taking a history lesson in the theory of R&B. If you want your songs to sound like the music on the radio, this tutorial is the best possible place for you to start.

just wanted to know whose song is that... great tutorial
How about making another R&B vid with lead vocal like many suggested, making the critics silent & happy. As for the plugins I like to see what the top producers use & maybe come up with my own tricks Logic plugins.
R&B is one of my favorite musical genres & David delivers in 4 dimensions, he's a great sound sculptor. Maybe with his mellow & deep voice he should think about singing his own songs to add to this wonderful repertoire.
Very nice tutorial on mixing R&B. It took me a while to get used to David's presentation method, and I'm glad I took the time. What a difference his mix made! The techniques presented can be applied to any style of music, and he lays them out clearly. I just wish I had watched this when I first started working with trying to put a mix together. Thanks David!
I agree with some previous posters. It is a very good tutorial but he utilizes some plugins that are not native to Logic, and some of them make a huge difference in the sound. I enjoyed it a lot.
On the whole, this is a very solid tutorial. It is decently long, and it covers many of the notoriously trickier parts of mixing. My only issue with the tutorial is that the project utilizes plugins that are not native to Logic, and in some cases are very expensive, professional grade plugins. It seems a little counter-intuitive to me to have a tutorial product using resources that may be well beyond those available to someone needing a tutorial. This could have been mitigated somewhat if the plugins used were explained a little bit better, to perhaps give the user a clue into how to emulate some of those effects. But it is still a very solid tutorial, with good information, tips, tricks and valuable bits of insight into the mixing process.
Generally it's a good video aimed at beginners. One big let down is the absence of a lead vocal track, which is the most important thing in all most every genre. I was hoping for a video with some more tricks for the more experienced mixer, but maybe there's a volume 2 on the way ? :-) If you're just starting out mixing, this is a good video for you.
Really, really enjoyed this video. David is so knowledgeable, patient in his delivery, and he just sounds like a really nice guy. I've been producing and mixing for quite some time, but wanted to get a sense of what tools are available in Logic to help me, particularly in the R&B context. This was a great introduction to Logic-particular techniques and tools, and I certainly learned some great little general mixing tricks from David as well. The video is good for beginners and experienced mixers as well, and that's not easy to do.
I liked the tutorial very much. The trainer is great! I would be however 100 % satisfied if he broadened his explanations to general theories or things to keep in mind when mixing R&B.He seemed to be a bit too focussed on that one song.
I am giving this tutorial a 4 because there can always be improvement on anything. I found the mixing r&b tutorial to be one of the best tutorials from MacProVideo thus far. I believe this tutorial can give the viewer a nice mind full of useful and productive tips as well as gained mixing knowledge. I believe the user should have stayed entirely in the environment of logic studio however, and not used 3rd party plugs as a user may not have other plugs and would be thrown off by the results gained...and after all it is a Logic Video. Ohter than that Kudos. NOW GET TO WORK ON THAT KONTAKT 3 VIDEO, and also that CAMEL AUDIO ALCHEMY VIDEO lol
This tutorial was amazing. Even if I'm French, David spoke slowly, I enjoyed this useful video.
Excellent stuff! I really enjoyed listening/looking, and I do believe that this is some of the best teaching I have had :-o)
Provided a couple tips, nothing major, but used a lot of expensive plug-ins that do not come with Logic. That is why I don't really even consider this a "Logic tutorial". I was a bit disappointed.
I am afraid I didn't get much substantive info out of this and didn't think it was worth the money. In contrast to Steve H's fabulous job on Logic 401, which was very instructive, 403 just walked through the steps without much useful tips, tricks and techniques.
I am a Pro Tools user and all I can say is this video is awesome. Especially for what little it costs. Sitting there watching this guy doing his magic and hearing the changes in the sounds of the tracks as he drops in his processing tools was an amazing learning experience. You do need some type of okay set of monitors to really hear what is going on but I would imagine most people thinking about this video would already have this. Anyway despite being titled as a logic video don't think if you use any other DAW like I do that you would not get immense value. You will. I agree with other reviewers that we need a rock and even metal version of this type of tutorial but even if R&B is not your genre this video will still teach you plenty anyway as it did me.
I don't write or record R&B in my studio, but I had learned so much from your other courses that I thought I might find some tips in this tutorial also. And I was right! Great job, as usual!
Overall very good, however sometimes the tips were abit drawn. Meaning a lot of the time you were listening to the changes being made to the audio, instead of getting the point across quickly and moving on.
Even thought "Mixing R & B" is not my style of music this Tutorial is filled with valuable information. I'm sure that anyone who downloads this Tutorial will benefit from it. Tutorials are a great way to learn. We can rewind and listem to it as much as we need to until we "Get It". I do request that Mac Pro Video have the same format having a Rock & Roll producer be involved. This is a Style that is not addressed. Plleeeaaaassssseeee!!
Hi, I really enjoyed the course and have learned a lot so far. David kept it moving and introduced me to new concepts. I plan to try some of the techniques on my next album like widening the mix and adding dimensions. I hope he adds another tutorial in the future that has the lead vocals and maybe the horns !
One word sums up this tutorial -subtle! There are no fireworks or jaw-dropping moments and like MPV says in its overlays - you need top quality monitors/phones to hear the A/B tests. All in all you get a very professional tutorial from a guy who really knows his stuff. Mixing is a very subjective thing so you may not agree with all of David's ideas of what constitutes a great mix. What is undeniable is that the end result sounds really good and you pick up a lot along the way. David is passionate about his subject and although he is dealing with a fairly narrow field you will certainly learn tricks that you can apply to your chosen genre. Ok MPV - another good one - now how about a mixing pop/rock tutorial!?
I really enjoyed this tutorial because it was explained in a manner easy to understand. I wish it had lead vocals but all of my other questions were answered.
I think that it is an excellent video. The presenter is concise and knows his stuff. My only negative comment - I think that you should list the file size next to the video. Not everywhere in the world has generous internet.
Excellent video! Really sent home how very subtle treatment in individual tracks can really make a mix sound so phat! It's all about the concept of where everything sits in the mix and how the sounds work together. It's amazing how subtle changes make such a good finished product. Sickening to see all those 3rd party plug-ins too.. better get saving. Great video.
I don't make R&B Music but I picked this up after the brilliant mixing electronica by Olav Basoski. I found tons of useful tips and tricks that have really improved my mix downs. I would really love to see more of these mixing series tutorials by different artists and engineers. How about some deep house or chill out stuff?
This was a great video! I wanted something that would give me more than just a technical understanding of how to use the Logic software. I wanted techniques for putting together polished mixes, and this video delivered. Please put out a similar video that deals with hard rock and metal. Recording and mixing heavily distorted guitars is an art form unto itself, and I'm sure lots of people could use help with it. Thanks!
Very good, all your videos so far are very good. I like the price and the content. Well done, Keep p the good work. Jeffrey Arana (Nonno Lee)
EXCELLENT!!! I can't imagine what I would've had to pay to sit with David Isaac in his studio and watch one of today's greatest producers/mixers go through an actual song. The tutorial was extremely informative, and I'd love to see more of these type "watching over the shoulder" type tutorials for all styles. GREAT JOB!!!!!!
i liked this alot - i also have the tutorial on mixing electronica - this too has all kinds of "inside" tips and tricks that are unique to this artists approach, and being delivered by the artist, in his language - beats any book hands down. bravo !!
Great overall tutorial on mixing modern R&B! Lot's of essential and useful information. Best of all, David shows you how to fit all tracks in a dynamic tune like this without creating clutter. The lack of main vocal was kind of disappointing. The use of reverb as an insert on almost every track -- good luck with that if your mac is a couple years or older, but great as an approach to establish placement and create width. I couldn't understand the structure of the song as the session did not have markers or color coding. Well worth the time and money even if it had the 3D, depth, and low end approach only.
David Isaac's course completely exceeded my expectations. I learned so much, fantastic value for money. This information will be put to good use. I would lke to see more courses like this, and from other producers and engineers in different styles too. Thanks!
I held off purchasing Logic 403: Mixing R&B because I already had the Mixing Electronica tutorial. But boy, am I glad I bought R&B as well. The ticket price was worth just the discussion on bringing DEPTH into the mix. And so simple, too. I immediately jumped into my current project, and even with a quick hack job, I suddenly had DEPTH! Thanks so much to David Issac and the whole MPV gang for that and everything else on the R&B product.
I loved it. Very useful. Money Well Spent. Now can i please get a Hip Hop / Rap mixing Logic
This was a very interesting video by David Isaac. Mixing has to be the most challenging part of music making - at least in my experience. Trying to get just the right sound and mix is definitely an art. Watching how Mr. Isaac went about taking what could have been something mediocre and taking to the next level was a treat. Would love to see more videos by professionals doing mixes on real material. Very enlightening to the novice mixer. Even bought a plug-in that he was using which I found to be very helpful to finalizing a mix. Enjoyed it very much.
Excellent Tutorial! Once I got the idea of dimension I have started a remix of my songs. I have had immediate positive results using David's approach to the mix. I reckon everything is clearer and not as much in your face . Check out "Baby On The Bus" remix by following the link.http://homepage.mac.com/smokinjimmy/FileSharing4.html While I wanted a strong baseline, prior to watching David's tutorial, it was muddy and overpowering. Both the kick and base can now be heard separately. I have saved the bus settings for reverb starting points for separate reverb applications to percussion, guitar and vocals to speed up the workflow for my other songs. So, thanks to David and macProvideo.com. I would love to buy more tutorials along these lines.
David obviously knows what he's doing. Was great to see a pro at work. Some more detail would have been nice - David had done more work to the mix than we were privy to. Other than than, great purchase. More please.
I have bought this along with Logic 404 Mixing Electronica since I also want to work on R & B, Jazz and Vocal flavored pieces. The choice was right-on as this tutorial deals with basically all "live" recorded materials and not much soft-synth MIDI tracks. This video provides instructions on how to make each element blend in also give more life, or "soul" to each track that come into the mixer's desk. Another important thing I am learning about the mix is to give the dimension in the mix, and the instructor goes deep into describing how that works in professionally made products. There is also some instructions on historical basis for how some instruments were mixed and should sound in the final product. In this days of soft-instruments, it is an important consideration to make natural sounding mix. In today's popular vocal music, there is always some influence of R & B music and thus I think many LP 8 users will find this a very valuable knowledge to acquire.
I think this is the worst video of logic tutorial series. I wish I never bought it... First of all the song chosen for the video is really boring. THIS is very important because of this, it is really hard to consantrate what the author says. Also, I do not think that this is a special video for R&B. You can extract same ideas from other videos... This video did not provide me new ideas! Becarefull before buying.
I thought the tutorial gave you a good appreciation of how R&B is mixed using Logic and would recommend it to anybody who is using logic, to mix R&B music
I'm not too satisfied because there's no surprise for me, I know Logic and I think it's booring for me.
i really enjoyed watching this training. having the "less is more" approach guiding is very inspiring and shows, that even subtle changes can make things good or bad. listing to this with headphones or grade a monitors is required and should maybe be encouraged. most of all i liked the song, unlike the "this is logic" song in another tutorial movie from macprovideo. so far the best video i watched and i'd appreciate if there was more videos like this one, where one really can sit "next" to a pro engineer and listen to explanations about the how/why/when of all the steps.
Loved the tutorial and David's clear grounded approach to the creative world of mixing. Two things i would of appreciated more was to hear David share the little key command/navigation tricks while mixing and set up track labeling better...I'm always looking for more tricks and faster ways to fly. I really dig what you guys offer ! Thank you so much! I would love to see a 3 hour tutorial spent on just VOCALS...really hip ways to achievie better mixes/blends/busses/comps and efx...Thanks Again!
Great Video. Altough I was hoping to see him mixing the lead vocal aswell. So I could see how mixing a complete song is done.
Video pleine de détails et d'astuces que j'utilise dans mon travail quotidien.
Hi, thanks a lot for this great Tutorial. I have so much fun listen to it. Very interessting how other people work with this Logic System! So thanks a lot and i hope we here us in the next Videos. Greets from Germany Sebastian
Loved the tutorial. But was disappointed as there was no lead vocal discussed. Lead vocals are very prominent in R&B and leaving that out seems very incomplete. Hopefully there's an update to the tutorial. Loved everything else.
This tutorial was informative and I did learn from it. I was dissapointed in 2 things: 1) There was no lead vocal mixing. Backup vocal, but no lead vocal. 2) The trainer's technique often involved reaching for an expensive 3rd party plugin that I don't own, without any reference to a Logic substitute plugin or technique. I expected this tutorial to be of the same excellent standard as Core Logic 8 and found it to be lacking. Sorry, but I honestly would not recommend 403: Mixing R&B.
This was my first 400 series and I really liked it. I know some people wanted just Logic plugins to be used, but I really liked to see what plugins the pros use. I was supprised to see how many Logic plugins were used.... I mean he had every plugin on earth installed on his machine and he used quite a lot of Logic plugins. Thumbs up for Logic. The only reason I'm giving it a 4 is because there wasn't a lead vocal track which I think would have been really important to cover. Can't wait for the next "mixing" tutorial to come out... hopefully on on rock music. Keep em coming.
yes they were fine i lant alot of things.thanks to issack good stuff brother.
Again, very good. As with the other videos i have mentioned alot of information, very useful, really need to watch a few times just to really understand and apply. Only thing I would say is that David uses a lot of 3rd party plug ins, which is great, but would be nice to see logics fx in action for these examples. Thanks anyway for the classes David. Very useful
macProVideo Tutorials are my best friends. I do not know better introduced Tutorials than of macproVideo. I have it all, because they are to be understood super easily: outstanding explains and demonstrated, helps to me with the work, or if I liked to test times fast something.
Even though I've used Logic since the mid nineties, and I get around in it very well, the program never ceases to amaze me when I discover new methods, tricks, features, etc. such as the ones I gleaned from the great tutorials that MacProVideo provides, especially the Logic 403:Mizing R&B, and 201: Steve H's Logic Master Class #1. These tutorials save me valuable time and effort and cause my end result to be maximized. I look forward to more in you Logic Series!
Excellent mixing tutorial presented by David Isaac. A very insightful approach to mixing this particular song, I only wish it could of dealt with mixing a lead vocal track as well. Nonetheless, valuable confidence building techniques with great results delivered by David in a cool relaxed and comfortable manner that makes you feel like you're there in the studio with him. A rare treat indeed! Thanks MPV! looking forward to more mixing sessions with the masters even in the Pop/Rock genres.
As a longtime MPV (Logic Pro)customer I was extremely excited to finally see how Logic 8 is used by the pros from start to finish. I felt that Olav's tutorial did a good overall job of explaing the very basics of mixing as one would to someone that hasn't had much experience (if any) at mixing inside the box. It's my feeling however that many of MPV's Logic subscribers(and users in general) may perhaps be past the "beginner" stage when it comes to mixing. What I would have truly found value in (and was hoping for) would have been a raw unedited song taken from start to commercial finish (or at least to the point of the mastering stage) and not a one hour rough and dirty mix. I understand mastering is a separate element. However, any AE worth his salt will tell you that a well mixed song should sound as you want it to sound as if your hearing it on the radio. At the end of Olav's tutorial the song was nowhere near that stage-really not even close. It sounded good, don't get me wrong, but as I said it was a rough mix and nowhere near ready for commercial release. My thought is that perhaps Olav could not mix a song to a commercial and professional quality doing it strictly in the box with Logic. That's not meant to be a dig. I'm just saying...perhaps it's not possible with Logic and it's included plugs? The third party plug-in "plugs" at the end seemed to infer a lack of Logic's ability but validate Olav's. That said, I use third party plugs moreso that maybe Logic's plugs, so if the opinion of MPV (or Olav's)is that they are what's needed in order to mix a track to a commercial sounding level than by all means let's hear him do it.
I really loved the Mixing R&B video. I would rate if 4 out of 5 only because it was slightly more difficult to hear exactly what David was saying sometimes. He doesn't exactly mumble, but it is tougher to hear him clearly compared to other videos in the series. I also rate it a 4 because he's a little slow as far as the operation of logic itself is concerned...he takes the long route to a lot of well known shortcut commands. On the positive side, I think all of his tips and pointers for working with R&B tracks are right on point. Maybe I'm wrong, but I honestly feel that many of the major points he made regarding R&B production could have been better articulated for those unfamiliar with the genre. Thank you for providing such quality training products and for having such masters teach from the trenches, so to speak, of the industry. I hope to maybe one day contribute some of my ideas to your training programs.
Another stunning tutorial! I am more of an electronic/film composer, but I learned tips and tricks from an R and B perspective . I had an idea should try looking unde that rock and I found a gem! It rocks!
A solid approach to mixing with a nod to R&B. This was a good mixing primer overall, my only real complaint was how slow it played out, which might be a good thing for those looking for a slower pace.
in general i like very much first of all because his approach about dimensions, how you can ,with a little bit of this or that ,you can built and well balance mix, no too much of anything,so to spaek but, with no lead vocal this tutorial has no sense,or, only has half sense ,at least no in this kind of music where the voice is the most important thing ,you can destroy a song ,if if you dont mix well the lead voice, i felt kind of dissapointed the tutorial is whorthy, really but it seems the nobody want to share in depth how to make up a lead voice .....and mix... my dream is that someday ,somebody make a tutorial about producing a song in reverse 1,this is the final product (whit profetional mastering) 2, this is the final mix and see what is the diference beetwen them 3 how you achive this mix (with lead voice). bravo about 3 party pugins congratulations for your hard work and knowlegde Hector Villazon
It's been useful. The critizism I feel to make is that being an advanced tutorial I wouldn't waste time (the way he did) explaining very basic function of logic. People who watches it is supposed to know the program in the basic functions. But actually, not going too much deep into the problems is a common "mistake" of all your video I've seen. Very annoying also the presentation of each chapter. Also would like to make a suggestion for the N.E.D....should make a bookmark in order to be able to remember until where somebody has watche d it
Absolutely incredible...wonderful presentation and I learned so much from this tutorial.. keep em coming macprovideo...you guys are awesome, and David's insights and techniques are priceless....
I did like and enjoyed Mixing RnB videos they are easy to follow along and good video quality but, I think they are to simple and does not provided enough info for an advanced learner. However they will be a great tool to have for someone that will like to leaner how the pros do it in big studios!!!
very very good job i will advise every body to check you out pierre
the video mixing RnB is very helpful Only one think the English is not my first lenguage so in my case I prefer to listen more clear and pronounce some worlds... Some times I need to rewind some tutorials to understand some frases and worlds or frases. Thanks a lot for your understanding and beautifull work that you doing for musicians and producers P.D Do you think to produce more complete tutorial for Logic Studio more pro and advance level There is so many amaising tools inside
very helpful, efficient explanation way of a mixing working progress. thanks
R&B is the sound we all strive for. Whether your doing reggae, rock, jazz, country, whatever...we want our instruments to get that R&B sound. This video addresses making real instruments sound like real instruments. Logic is not just for trance-electronica-house-disco garbage. You can make real music with this program. Great music, in fact. This is a very good video about making very good music.
I would rate Logic 403 with 5 stars because David did a great job, with very clear explanations, perfect pace and key topics addressed, but.... there is something BIG missing , which is the LEAD VOICE! We all know that it is the most important thing in the mixing, especially in R&B, and it is not covered at all??? THis does not make any sense to me
macProVideo has delivered another winner with David Isaac's "Mixing R&B in Logic" tutorial. Packed with lots of useful tips conveyed in a laid back manner, this program feels very personal and conversational. Kind of like what you might expect if you were lucky enough to have David sitting right beside you while covering this material. I love the idea of having genre-specific Logic tutorials hosted by well-known instructors who tend to do a lot of work in that genre. Keep them coming!!
I only liked 10% of this video. First of all, if you are a Logic user you'll notice that this guy is not! He is slow as hell with everything. Doesn't even know the basic key commands. I would not have any clients if I worked as slow as him. My resume is not as impressive as his but I do worked and work with major artists (Lauryn Hill, LeToya Luckett, Ace Hood, Caselly, to name a few). The track that he was mixing sounded like a 1986 jam. I'n not even an engineer, I'm just a producer but I can mix a track WAY better than him. Also, what is that shit about "we don't have a main vocal yet!". That's like somebody trying to sell a car with no wheels and no engine. Good mixing should always be 80% vocals 19.9% grove 0.1% everything else. There was some useful comments/tips but there's nothing there that you can't find doing some research online. I regret spending my money in this outdated tutorial. MACPROVIDEO NEED TO CATCH UP WITH WHAT'S GOING ON IN THE INDUSTRY TODAY. IF YOU DON'T APPRECIATE NEW ARTISTS/PRODUCERS/MIXERS DO SOMETHING ELSE BUT DONT TAKE AWAY PEOPLE'S MONEY!!
It was very good, i dont even mix r&b but i wanted to see if i could learn anything new I learned alot i can carry over even to the electronic music mixing
hello martin Yet again I thoroughly enjoyed watching and listening to someone else's thought processes when mixing. I've purchased quite a few of your tutorials and figured this one would deal quite well with audio, particularly vocals, which it certainly did. A lead vocal in the mix would have rounded things out a little more. Great tutorials keep going! regards peter
Loved "Mixing R&B" - great example of one persons organized way of mixing... as well as tips from drums to vocals - great job!! - loved the "real life" interaction with the "producer" nice touch
I love it, it´s the best i see for long. Please make a follow-up perhaps with HipHop, it´s absolute great. Please say David he is the best :)
I am really glad David did this for Mac pro video. It really does give definite insight to getting all styles of music to work musically not just sound great. I do advise students to learn the basics of the plugins as much as possible as well as bring to the table as much as possible as they will gain a great deal from Davids experience. The concepts of the Mix really open the door to what the mix in the music is all about. I thought Bass Dimension was good. The fatness remains with the high pass filter allowing kick and bass to have it's own space. These are Height, Width and Depth. Bus Compression kind of got lost about the color because I don't use the Ozone 3. I noticed the UAD Putec in the strip which doesn't seem to be the same as the Ozone 3. I did notice that what ever goes through the bus I think it's was drums really rocks. I thought in EQing the Rhodes bringing out the bell sounding overtones was a nice addition. I didn't notice the sound through my headsets. The added frequencies to bring out were interesting. It may have been somewhere around the fundamental and the third overtone but it's most likely specific to the tambre of the Rhodes. it's a great point to make about the speaker on the floor in a live situation. The adding space section goes along with the training earlier in the video on depth height width Depth. I thought the part on distortion showed a subtle application. During this section as with the whole tutorial he shows the soloed track but also shows it in the mix. I liked the section on riding the mix and Stereo Imaging. I am glad he did the section on the print bus. In Flutes and FX I was unsure if the Harmonica was a flute or a Harmonica. I liked the results in the mono vocals. if I had to think of something automatic I would take with me it would be that - how to make the vocals sound fat by panning mono tracks. I don't really know if that works by option dragging vocal tracks sense th...
Great hands on tutorial demonstrating practical application. I know I'll refer to it many times. The only thing that could make it better is if we could have access to the source file so we could make our own mix. Great job. MacProVideo just keeps getting better!
This tutorial was really excellent, and after seeing it once I immediately went and remixed (and definitely improved) some completed tunes on the basis of what I learned. Mr. Isaac knows his stuff, and gives insider info while still being in touch with the home recordist. My area is folk/blues/rock, but nevertheless i thought this was one of the most interesting and informative tutorials on mixing I've seen.
This is an excellent Tutorial, it's easy to understand from beginning to end. The instructor makes it simple. Thanks for creating the R&B Tutorial. C. McCoy
I though this tutorial was good, but it didn't fully show how r&b music is mixed. Why I say this, There is no verse vocals. Mixing a beat can be seen all over the net. There was a chorus but it to was spotty, meaning only the overdubs and harmonies are heard not the main voice of the hook. There were some really good tips in this tutorial. But all in all it was informative to say the leased. I look forward to the next urban style tutorial, hopefully it will be constructed for the tutorial to be fully mixed and up to date; not just a project they had of their clients, allowing us to hear the full song in detail!
I thoghut there were some very good things about. i wish however that he would have used mostly logic pro plugins instead of all those third party plugins.
Excellent videos & learn lots from each. Well done & fantastic value!
This tutorial really is a wonderful opportunity to learn with the pros how to get te most from the box. Thank you all at MacProvideo, thank you Mr. Isaac.
The tutorial was excellent. I enjoyed every min. of it. I loved getting into the mind a skilled and talented producer/engineer. I only wish that he used more of Logic's plugin rather then mostly using third party. But that is small. I still give this video 5 because it was clear, informative, and digestible. I would reccomend this to anyone who wants to beef up their mixing skillz. Thanks Macpro for another good one.
The hits keep coming from Mac Pro Video This is a great video.
My expectation were extremely high and I don't that the tutorial delivered. There was nothing in the tutorial that was that showed any new techniques that were not explained in other tutorials. The Logic 404: Mixing Electronica was far more enlighten and insightful that this tutorial.
Davids seminar was excellent, but I do find the choice in his music not really the kind of band I was hoping to hear. But by the end of the sessions the song kind of grew on you. David Isaac experience and expertise were very evident. Anyone one takes the time to go through the material will of course will learn a great deal, with his subtle hints and good advice when dealing with mixing and workflow. Over all I would purchase any of Davids' future work. Thank you Martin for putting a pro at our disposal.
This is a great tutorial as it goes from end to end the entire process of mixing as done by a seasoned professional. However I would recommend high quality headphones for some of the EQ tips which are so subtle they are almost imperceptible.
Very average..boring..lots of talking about himself and very little information..very dissappointed
I hav'nt had time to delve too deeply yet , but with what I've learned so far I'm well impressed.
Off da chain...It was great, but I kinda wish he would have kept everything in Logic, though..That's why he gets a 4.5 instead of a 5..
I must admit, i'm not a producer/writer in the the R&B field... so i was a little hesitant in purchasing this tutorial in the first place. After I watched him go through the video, not once but twice, i find his style insightful when it comes to creating depth & width in a track, all of which i will be using in my next house track. I think as a logic tutorial it's very basic and could have used more of Logic itself... he relies on too many 3rd party plugs without giving us the "out of the box" approach that Olav gave us in Logic 404; I understand though... I myself have some of those DSP plugs that he used, however; most of us don't. Another problem i have with it is that David tends to repeat himself and he took an inordinant amount of time to get to "business" and we almost could have done without the first 10 or so videos...but that's just me. Overall, i found this tutorial excellent and full of valuable, if not sage wisdom. Especially when it comes to mixing and working with "real" audio... Nicely done.
I liked this tutorial and the way David teaches, but there was no lead vocal! That's really the main focus of a great R&B track. I would really like to see him work a song containing all "live" tracks, as it seemed these samples & keyboard tracks didn't seem to need any taming, corrections, compression as such. Also, the description says this is both... 3 hours & 244 minutes.
I just downloaded this video and it is really amazing. I have just started the program and already have learned so much. The tip regarding hiding the reference tracks is great! I never thought about working that way. I am really looking forward to getting deeper into this one. Another excellent series.
Just watched this new MacProVideo through from start to finish - absolutely captivating ! Great to hear and see how David worked the sound up through the different stages from the "raw" recording to a polished mix. Thank you very much David for sharing your skills, insights and your "heart and soul" approach to music. In a sphere where the focus often seems to be overly on the technology it is great to hear a real, balanced musical perspective and an appreciation of what music is really all about - and the thing that touches our hearts - the joy of beautiful sound, and the emotion it contains. A real treat and absolutely inspirational ! The best music production video I have ever seen. Thanks for making this possible MacProVideo, and very much appreciated. Kind Regards, Nick
I must say I was rather excited when the email announcing this tutorial hit my mailbox, mostly from the genre being covered. Although I own CD’s by almost all of the artists named in his bio, I was not familiar with David Isaac. After listening to 2.5 hrs of this 3 hour tutorial thus far, I will be revisiting those CD’s along with any future CD purchases to see which ones he was involved with. In this tutorial David has his Mix Engineer hat on (as opposed to his Producer hat). As he is creating the mix, he does a great job of communicating his objectives and the reasoning behind them. When I first heard the song David was going to use in this tutorial, I was less than thrilled. There were parts I just knew he was going to discard, I know I would have. However, he managed to find a place for all of the elements and make them work well. In executing the mix, as one might expect, David makes use of a number of plug-ins. A good number of them are third party, including a few I never seen before. On one hand, as a person who is still learning his way around Logic, it would have been nice if he were to make use of just the plug-ins included within Logic, but I supposed that might be too much to ask if the Logic ones don’t get the job done. On the other hand though, it’s good to find out what world class tools are out there and how they are best used. A number of the manipulations that David made to the mix are very subtle. You will need good monitors or a good set of earphones to hear them. I was listening through a pair of Sennheiser HD280’s and there were manipulations that I still couldn’t hear. (Perhaps it was too subtle for the audio/video compression of the tutorial to retain, or maybe my ears are just getting too old.) However, the proof is in the pudding. As he took a song that I probably would never listen to and molded it into one some that I could enjoy listening to, all while still keeping the vision of the original producer and...
