Native Instruments’ Razor is a totally slick additive synthesis machine. See all the different ways you can slice this knife of a synth into your tracks in this 40-plus video tutorial by expert synthesist G.W. Childs...
Razor is one of the best soft synths to hit the music marketplace in years. With its powerful additive synthesis engine and its vast array of effects and modulators, your only limitation is the depth of your imagination! And, speaking of imagination, that‘s why we chose the informative and always imaginative G.W. Childs to lead you on this tutorial journey.
You’ll start off with Razor basics, where you'll discover its amazing user interface: Randomize & Morph, the Visual Display and its Filters section, to name a few. The rest of this deep tutorial teaches you Razor through the process of sound design. This means you’ll see G.W. actually wrestling with this synth to create cool Bass, Lead, Pad, Choir and Vocoder patches while along the way teaching all about additive synthesis and Razor's unique cutting-edge features. And, throughout this fascinating journey, you’ll also see Razor’s vibrant animated display in action so that you’ll not only hear the results of G.W.’s sound design but you’ll see it, too. So if you’re into Native Instruments, Razor, and additive synthesis this tutorial will take you where you want to go!

Clear, detailed and humor. Great series. There could have been a brief video explaining LFOs, waves etc. for beginners although I'm familiar with it, but not an expert.
Good instruction and easy to follow. My only suggestion is that he also showed how to make a big growling wobble bass found in dubstep or aggresive electronic music as what I would expect this synth to be great for.
Great tutorial. I was able to thoroughly understand all about this instrument. I will start using this instrument more thanks to this tutorial.
Great details on this wild ass synth. Hope to remember all the creative angles I can use this thing for. I may have to return again because there is so much control.
You will learn things from this, don't get me wrong. However, it's a walk through a set of patches that are very much planned out ahead of time; he clearly has a set of numbers for each knob's setting in front of him, and while he sometimes covers why something is set a certain way, it's not a guarantee. Basically, they are clear videos, but walking you through a finished project is more the way of this tutorial than actually building anything from scratch.
great stuff! he keeps it interesting and there is no waste of time or useless information. everything seems organized in a way to touch on every parameter mod and i love how he explains in detail why he changes certain parameters to get a certain sound
I kind of did this on a whim, didn't know what to expect. I've always liked Razor presets and played around with them and liked them, but never considered how deep, flexible and unique of a synth it is. I'm blown away! What a clear tutorial with fun walkthroughs of completely different types of patches- bass, pad, lead, choir, even vocoder. All covered. I have a feeling Razor will be a mainstay in my arsenal for a long time. Thanks!
I am completely new to Native Instruments, and Razor. Upon hearing the demo,on N.I's website,I was amazed by this synth, and its sound, and features. I have purchased Razor, and hoping to purchase Komplete 9,in the near future to use in Ableton Live G.W's style is very informative, and I was not disappointed,by this purchase. As I have some of Ableton Live courses,by G.W as well, Really good tutorial, packed with content carefully explained as G.W knows how,ha,ha Well done!!
Without a doubt this synth has much to offer and this tutorial has managed to direct it greatly and give a vast amount of insight to its capabilities.
Great introduction into Razor. Highly recommended for anyone looking to get more into synthesis.
Great series of tutorials that concisely explain many of the features of this synth.
A quick and concise tour of Razor's capabilities. G.W. Childs covers the essential applications for this cutting tool.
Fantastic. Very quick. No messing about. Excellent structure, showing all features in a progressive way with different types of patch. Lead patch was a little bit rushed though.
Some great tips on morphing patches to create new and exciting stuff! Thanks:-)
Great overview of the Razor synth. Covered all the settings and a number of the options for oscillators, filters, effects, etc. This tutorial was my first intro to this incredible synth. Thanks!
Excellent tutorial! Short lessons covering relevant topics with practical examples. Keep 'em coming!
Great set of tutorials makes we want to get deeper into Razor. Very well put together and very understandable.
this tutorial demonstrates every part of razor and make you love this synth ! top notch at a bargain price a must have !
Nothing to say, i've bought Razor only because i see your review, this synth is great and you need someone that tell you how to use this extreme potential! Thanks MacPro! i think this is the best tutorial on Native Instrument products! Very very nice!
Ok this video should ship with razor! This video starts with the interface and saving and loading basics and slowly builds by building instruments from scratch as all the options are explained along the way. The instructor is fantastic, not at all boring. He's focused and the lessons are simple but powerful. If you follow along, when your done you'll have built all your standard instruments and understand how to tweak for more. The choir is amazing at the end. This is a great immersion into razors power. Highly recommend.
Fantastic tutorial, goes along at the perfect pace and highlights all areas of Razor with the right amount of depth. Thanks.
Excellent tutorial. Love the vocoder sections in the end. So much you can do with this synth. Thanks for the brilliant explanations.
Excellent tutorial The way you are taken through several examples of building a sound from scratch is really good. Highly recommended
Without question, this has been the greatest tutorial about synthesis I've ever watched. G.W.s vocal tone and pacing are on point. He puts everything in perspective and has not only opened my eyes to power of Razor, but has enabled me to finally "connect the dots" in terms of understanding the roles and mechanics of synthesis. I can't recommend this course enough. Even if you don't have Razor, this course will enlighten you as to creative routing and sound creation for any synth. Thanks G.W., my songs are already sounding thicker and more concise. Cheers!
Razor is an amazing synth & I think this is a great tutorial for this powerful synth for a couple of reasons - Firstly, you will gain a greater understanding of some of the more esoteric parameters of this synth (the display isn't just there to look trippy) & secondly, G.W. has included a good amount of sound design ideas & technique to help welcome you gently into the world of additive synthesis. Thanks G.W. & MPV for yet another piece of essential viewing, this time round it's for anyone wanting to try to harness the power of the Razor.
