Aphex Twin Upcoming Cheetah EP Actually a Synth Plugin?
Rounik Sethi on Wed, June 8th 3 comments
News about a new software synth is rarely greeted with such amazement and anticipation outside dedicated music making circles... like this one about the "potential" new Aphex Twin synthesizer.

Now here’s an interesting scenario. Imagine an album or EP release being a sampler or synth plugin allowing you some options as to how you play the music back. Well, a new poster for Aphex Twin’s new EP suggests that with some juicy details.

Here’s how the poster (via RouteNote) looks and reads:

Apex Twin Cheetah EP

Apex Twin Cheetah EP Poster

"The Aphex Twin Cheetah EP uses digital sound generation techniques combined with wave sequencing technology to bring you sounds with movement and depth rarely found on records today.

"To assure you that your Cheetah EP will give you many years of enjoyment, please be sure to read the owners manual carefully before attempting to operate the Cheetah EP.

"If you wish to experiment and create some sounds of your own, first try editing some sounds we’ve already made for you, before attempting to create a patch from scratch.

"We sincerely hope that having battled through the programming of the Cheetah EP, you have not become familiar with the exceptional potential of this record.

"Have fun programming, and if you create any superb patches and tones which you feel deserve to be appreciated by other Cheetah EP buyers, send a MIDI System Dump of them, on a disc to us at WARP and if we also think they are superb, you could be rewarded for your efforts. Try us!”

  • Digital Wave Sequencing Synthesizer
  • Sounds programmed to sequence through changing waveforms as the note plays, giving exceptional movement and character to the music
  • 15 note polyphonic
  • Velocity Sensitive
  • Multi-Timbral
  • Stereo Output
  • Fully programmable from the front panel
  • LED display

For synthesists and music makers this is potentially very exciting. Perhaps there’ll be a software synth bundled with the album? Alternatively, perhaps we'll be able to buy the album which lives inside a hardware synth. Now THAT would be exciting!

Let’s wait and see what Richard D. James has planned…

UPDATE: Ben Tucker did some digging and found some of the wording is straight out of the Cheetah synth manual

As much as I love the idea of an Aphex Twin VSTi, I think it's just a clever tongue in cheek ad.

Mh. The only thing that caught my attention is that you called him APEX twice. His "name" is APHEX Twin...

Reminds me of the old Information Society song called "White Roses 1.0 300 8-N-1," it consisted of 55 seconds of modem noise. The tones could be decoded by anyone who picked up on the hints in the track title - 300 baud, 8 bits, No parity, 1 stop bit.
