The iPhone, we can all acknowledge at this point, has an awesome camera, period. And, because it’s so accessible (we always have our phones on us, right?), it tends to be the camera we use the most.
But, just because the camera is great, the subject is great, and even the scenery is great, it doesn’t mean that the photo will be. There are a lot of anomalies that go in to the creation/capture of a good photo. This is especially true, when it comes to trying to capture people... And, in this case, I mean women...or, men (if you prefer sexy men).
The bottom line: When you’re trying to bring sexy into your iPhone photos, there are a few things that you have to create within the environment, as well as the people you are photographing.
In this small, but meaningful article, I’d like to share with you a few ways of getting some sexy in those iPhone photos, if this happens to be your goal.
Let’s face it, even if you are dating the most beautiful man, or woman in the world, they need to be in the right mood, location and attire to give off a bit of sexy. There are some people that can slip in to the sexy mode as soon as you tell them to, but these are rare.
Some easy methods for getting someone in the mood (aside from drugs and alcohol?):
The next step will also greatly how your subject is feeling about themselves...
You can’t necessarily film sexy within a broom closet... Well, with the right person, ahem, technically you could. The bottom line: You need a sexy environment for the sexy photo to work, and the subject to feel sexy.
An easy trick: Get the subject on to a comfortable bed, couch, or chair in a room with subdued, and moody lighting.
Comfort means relaxed, relaxed potentially means sexier. Dim lights generally inspire sleepiness and relaxation. If you mix this up with the methods suggested above, you’re sure to have some... fun.
This is by far the hardest part in all of this. Everyone has an angle where they look better. Everyone has a look that makes them look sexier. It’s your job as a photographer to find those looks.
One method that I greatly rely on is: Don’t snap photos...What?!
I tend to go with using the video camera on my iPhone to experiment with looks, angles and position. Think of it this way: A photo is only one frame of video. A video snaps 29 frames per second, sometimes even more. That’s a lot of photos that you could be choosing from in a second of shooting.
Also, people get uncomfortable when they feel on the spot. Uncomfortable kills sexy. But, when a camera is rolling, your subject doesn’t even have to know. Let’s face it, people are much sexier when they are being themselves!
After the camera is finished rolling, run the video, and press the sleep/wake and Home buttons together on your iPhone to snap individual frames from your video. Instant photo with multiple poses of your subject!
One method that I’ve had great success with would be using different filters to augment and enhance mood lighting. I used an app called 8MM to record off several takes of my girlfriend, while she lounged around on my bed. I would roll the video, change filter modes, etc. In the meantime, my girlfriend would roll around on the bed looking sexy. Here’s what I got:
I ran the camera and just allowed her to be. I’d flip between different filters, and have fun. Later, I went back and found the individual frames that I liked the most.
Keep in mind: Apps like 8MM do introduce fuzz, blurriness and other behaviors of old cameras in which they are meant to emulate. You should remember though, that many of the sexiest photos ever taken (Marilyn Monroe, anyone?) were taken with old cameras!
In the end, you definitely need to develop an eye for sexy in order to capture sexy. But, if you stick to some (if not all) the suggestions above. You’ll definitely be on the right track!
