Do you want a quicker way to look up common words? Wish you had instant access to an encyclopedia? Need help with spelling or word usage? Or perhaps you'd like to find synonyms for a commonly used w

  • Command - 0 = View All search results
  • Command - 1 = Look up in the Dictionary
  • Command - 2 = Look up in the Thesaurus
  • Command - 3 = View results from Apple
  • Command - 4 = Look up using Wikipedia

Tip 3 -  Search with Spotlight

Choose Dictionary > Preferences
Select the contextual menu to Open Dictionary Panel.

Place the mouse cursor over a word (in an application that supports Dictionary)
Hold down Control-Command-D

  • Hi, your article is very helpful, but I have a question. Is it possible to resize or make the pop-up dictionary window bigger?? It is ridiculously small to see.....

Yes, it is possible. You need to edit the style sheets (.CSS files) within the contents of the dictionary app.

Hi Mike, Thanks. The Dictionary Panel (pop-up) cannot be resized... However, you could use the control+scroll wheel to zoom in if the text size is an issue. Not an ideal solution though. Would be nice if the panel window itself could be resized.

Hi, I assume you were asking the question to me? ;-) You can select Japanese-English in the built-in Dictionary in Mac OS X... but I haven't come across a Lithuanian add-on... You could use Automator and/or Applescript to copy the selected text and have it open Google Translate where you can then find a definition of the word. Alternatively, I found this page which might help: http://www.tiptrickmod.com/mac/add-dictionaries-to-your-macs-dictionary-app-and-more-cunning-linguist-tips/ Let me know how you get on. R

Question, Can I review my searching words in the Dictionary as a reference in the future? Because closing the Dictionary will not keep them to me. Thanks,
