Indie band, Turin Brakes, showed up at our SxSW studios in Austin to subject themselves to our patented, "song-in-a-day" stress test! See how this awesome band and "Team Dubway" capture the musical magic in this marathon songwriting and production course!
You never know what's going to happen when you book a top indie band like Turin Brakes to compose and produce a song –in-front of the cameras– in a single day! It's a daunting challenge. However, like all the other courses in our entertaining "SongCraft Presents" Series, Ben Arthur and the band, along with the whole Dubway team, really came up with the musical goods!
So yet again we filled our guerrilla, SxSW recording studio with all kinds of high-end mics, audio interfaces, instruments and cool software to get ready to rock. The band arrives... Cameras roll... Introductions are made and everybody gets down to the songwriting business at hand!
This "docutorial" is both an exploration of gun-to-the-head creativity and an audio recording marathon all wrapped into one. You get to witness a song idea being born and nurtured from its initial spark of inspiration to a completely realized song. Then, all along the way, you go to school on pro recording and production techniques as Mike Crehore and Al Houghton do their engineering and production magic both in Austin and back at the "real" studio for overdubs and mixing in New York City.
So sit back and see Turin Brakes and songwriter/host Ben Arthur as they face the ultimate, musical challenge of writing and producing a one-day song... right before your eyes!

while this course was about Song Writing the most impressive guy is not the band or their singing or writing but the guy that does the Engineering with Pro Tools and Logic Pro X he is so knowledgeable with Mics, EQ, Compressors, limiters it was mind blowing to watch him perform his craft

I love the Song Craft series. I've watched them all, and this one is to me the best, though they are all great. This series is unlike anything I have ever seen, providing candid and enlightening insight into song creation, from start to finish, with such creative people. Kudos to the team that puts this together. I am inspired to pursue my musical journey because watching these real people make real music in a few hours in a home environment most of us can relate to is just...well inspiring! Thank you MPV for all your great content, and for this series in particular.

A great balance of creative, and technical, information. Really useful information about collaborative songwriting and producing. Also a really useful section on moving projects between ProTools and Logic. Terrific stuff! Thank you.

Okay, I was wrong. This was the best of the series. The band was AMAZING!!! The song they came up with was incredible. Last but definitely not least, the engineer outdid himself and I am very very grateful for his diligence. He took his time to show his mixes and mastering in both ProTools and Logic. He did this methodically and side by side. This is definitely a video that I will keep as a reference when I get back to getting a better grasp on Logic Pro X. I think this series should be in the category of recording and production, because the detail and the time this gentleman places into his work should be studied by more than just songwriters. Overall, they deserve the 5 out of 5 stars for this video.

A brilliant chapter in the SongCraft Presents series! Extra added value in the dual trace through signal chain in both Pro Tools and Logic Pro.

Best one yet ... especially with the inclusion of LogicPro X. I really like how Ben facilitates and articulates the process ... and have come to see Mike Crehore at the gold standard for sound engineering. I've learned a lot from them. My only suggestion? More of this with Logic Pro X.
Great work folks.

Very beautiful song. Very beautiful process... And I sure will be listening to more from Turin Brakes. and I just love the Logic Pro X mixing and mastering of recreations wave and Pro Tools plugins - shows you can achieve a very professional product if you know your tools.
