Editing Out Background Noise- Help
Every year my daughter, who is a teacher, enters a large (100+) group of her pupils for a national dance competition. For the last three years I have been assembling the music from commercial tracks, editing and mixing the tracks to map onto her choreography. This year they have recorded, as a link between each track, a series of voiceovers, letters to Grandma. Unfortunately the recording has picked up a nasty and intrusive steady machine noise and I have been trying to eliminate it. I have tried everything that seems appropriate in Logic but readily admit I may have missed something. I then purchased BIAS's SoundSoap, believing that if given the chance to 'learn' the offending noise, SoundSoap then uses that knowledge to eliminate the noise from the recording. So far all this has been unsuccessful. I've edited together several seconds of the noise without any voiceover as a test or learning tool but haven't been able to effectively use that so far. As for SoundSoap, I managed to install it, I think, (after a struggle) but now can't find it as a Logic plugin. I can use it as a freestanding module though. As you can tell, I'm floundering. Really grateful for any help you can give.. Mike

Hi Mike What version of Logic are you running? If you're using Logic Pro 8 (part of Logic Studio) then you'll have an app called Sound Track Pro 2 which is an audio editor and can do some noise removal. In Logic have you tried using the denoiser plug-in or lowering the EQ band (Channel EQ) of the offensive machine noise. However, it depends on the noise itself to how successfully you can remove or reduce it. Try Soundsoap to see what it can achieve...I've never used it - but have had some success with Sound Track Pro 2. Let us know how you get on! Rounik

Hi Mike, If you are using Logic 8 have a look at SoundTrack Pro. There are some very useful and powerful ediiting tools available to you there. If it is really bad and unusable have you thought about re recording the voice overs ? I know it's not an ideal solution but sometimes it has to be done... and can save time, frustration and heartache in the long run. Hope this is of some help Bj

I just want to add that Martin covers removing noise in details in chapters 9 of the Core Soundtrack Pro tutorials. Maybe it can be interesting to check it out. http://www.macprovideo.com/tutorial/soundtrackPro2 Take care!
