Thganks YADJ & Rounik I'm using Logic 8. I've downlaoded the tutorial for the esx24 but still watching it. I must say that I agree with YADJ that for me Kontakt seems a bit more intuitive - I was also surprised to see that it has a kind of percussion sequencer built in also... I have a collection of sounds that io recorded through an Eventide, with some older analog synths and an electric guitar. I cut some of them into loops and tried foirst In LIVE. It struck me that Live has some remarkable features but it seemed to me, the sound quality of the "re-processed sound file in Live lost a certain noticable sound quality - which Logic seemed to preserve - at least more so than Live. I want to to record live environments for example I trecorded soiunds in a train station here in Ukraine - I'm noticing certain timbral differences in the type of recordings and even the applications themselves...so far Logic and Kontakt seem to be good match, though I'm sure the esx24 would be also. The enxt thing is the signal processing - is it possible to use 24 bit recordings in Esx24/Kontakt? and then of course - I still find a difference in a high end reverb hard ware processor - but I'm also going over to other thrid party and Logc plugins for sure. The main thing is - avoiding the "raspy digital distortion that begins to make every sound almost sound like the same - I guess I'm trying to decide on which tools to really learn first before dedicating the time. The tutorials all make learning logic certainly worth the price of being here, that's for sure! One of the interesting things in the tutorials is the things that are implied beyond what is shown, about what;s possible. In the Hyper Editor...it seems the possibilities are there for something beyond the obvious, which in itself is enough as it is. But I'm wondering...how much does the new changes in LOGIC 8's ULTRABEAT make some of the uses for hyper editor using drum maps...more or less redundant? I mean...isn't the new additons in Ultrabeats sequenvcer ability to see the sequences very much like the hyper editor almost covering the same functions? what is the primary difference between the two that I should give priority? recently I recorded a very old drum that came from New guinea that a freind got from his grandfather - the sound is terriffic. I want to build my onw ZULUS-From-Hell 808 drum set...beginning from WAVE files...Kontack sampler can do it...but isn't there a way to get these files converted to files that can be read, imported, programmed, sequenced, into Ultrabest and the ESX24 and finally played like other files? and secondly...would I be better off to build my own instrument sets in the Hyper Editor using the drum map as shown in the tutorial?...do i builkd them first as Apple Loops? but then...How can I convert them to make them acceptable to the ESX24 sampler and to Ultrabeat? Hi Rounik! Yes I agree with all you've said here. There is also the piano roll editor which is inter-changeable I would guess... I wonder how much the step editor becomes a key tool here...because it seems like regions, looping, can also accomplish some of the same tasks, just doing it a different way... I'm looking for the best ways to compose the progression of the song. I am hearing many modern songs played everywhere but there are certain ones that are doing things in ways that I personally like - and keeping a live feeling to it is essential. thanks Jake

Following the tutorials, I've created my Hyper-editor using Ulrabeat, and also my layered instruments ( though there are menu changes in logic 8 it seems) and I've also got my arpeggiator with transorm switch.In another tutorial I see how the "regions " are looped and arranged, and I have all my channel strips, plugins, eq, etc, set to record, I've created two tracks - one with ultabeat using both it's sequencer and hyper-editor, and I also used the hyper editor to create a track using the layered instrumensts...I set my 4 bar loop at the top and hit play...everything is playing/sounding fine...now I want to record these midi tracks so that I can make audio regions out them and use those audio regions to begin to arrange/compose my final song? is this the way to do it?...I've checked out the bounce tutorial but there's something I'm not yet getting about the final way in which I get all my midi and virtual intrumenst and even audio tracks into the final step in order to record the final form that the final song will take- my final file that i will burn onto a CD?? Can someone briefly give the general steps for the stages to the final record process? I know enough about autoimation and mixing - there's just something in the beginning to end steps for recording I don't yet see. One more question - it seems to me the step Input keyboard could be very handy and I see there are key commands for it. Can someone explain how much do they find the step input keyboard an essential tool if we are composing electronic music? Thanks Jake

Thanks Rounik! I come from the back ground of recording electric guitar/hardware effects in pro-tools. then migrated over to electronic music and...Logic. I also use(d) a older Xpander synth and 909, i controlled with a Micr-Q with it's own arpeggiator. What I liked about it was the "live" spontaneous "happy accidents" that are possible with hands on, "on-the-flky" mixer and effects while recording... now I have a remote SL as controller and Logic...everyhting is much more virtual and on the computer screen. In Logic, there are virtual instruments and the excellent tools for sequencing midi ( hyper editor and pioano roll - Ultrabeat sequencer) However...the actual recording/sequencing is "different" than just to play and record with hardware 909, XP,micr-Q. So now we have: 1) audio tracks 2) virtual instruments 3) ext midi instruments 4) imported wave files. 5) Bounce I see from Martin Sitetr's tutorial such important concepts as "Anchoring" and cutting and looping sections of audio files. I've also understood the value of "shifting audio" in Steve's tutorial. And I do see what your saying about keeping the midi files for the complete song... So right now...I have a four bar loop in the hyper editor/piano roll editor for a layered instrument in the esx24, and in Ultrabeat. I have everything set to record. In fact the hyper editor already recorded the midi notes. I also see how to set up multiple patterns in the Ultrabeat sequencer and then grab them and slide them onto a track into the arrange...and I see the value of slicing up audio into loops to arrange the song. I'm grappling with how to keep as much of a live feel in the composition while trying to get a better grasp of how to sequence and record each type of file format - and do it so that it all lines up syncinmg with the tempo, at th same time. I hope I am making some kind of sense in my question. It is not a simple question of just hit the record button...play some parts and there's your track and then add another track. The bounce feature is very different to the "live" work flow. but I thin it's because I just don't get the best ways to take all the "ingredients meaning different file types mentioned above and then getting from there to the final progression of the song...which then must be "bounced to the format for mastering...am i making any sense? Hi Steve.. you mention in your NAMM Blog the desire for new controllers. I see one I would like to have in the future..but even before then I have a Remote Sl Controller Keyboard..and it has Automapping for Logic..I would like to see a tutorial on MIDI MAPPING - and using Controller #s, using external controllers for live controls of Logic, for such devices as virtual instruments...But especially Midi Mapping and how it is done. ..How about Virtual Money Routing from a keyboard controller..that can be sent to our laptop printer from anywhere in the world?:) I am interested in the future potential of live performance with laptop and Logic. Logic 8 also has Mainstage and I've not heard a word about it and it seems like something I'd be very interested in a tutorial on also. My Remote SL has the Automap templates - and like YADJ says I would like to have far more control with faders, external knobs, Faders, etc..someday I would like to own one of the high end DJ mixers which have extensive capability for MIDI Mapping and controls...and it would be great to know more about how Logic Environemt, Automap templates and Midi Mapping can be set up in Logic! Oh and one more thing!! I woulkd really like to know how to set up NODES !!! between two laptops..I have an old small G4 motoroal chip and the new G4 with Intel so I could do it. Thanks! Jake

well, maybe where I am located at the moment I could route it into the EURO Conveter instead if I just had some knobs and faders and transform tutorials - more nifty tools to do with the environent. Thanks for the tip on the touch tracks YADJ - I will check this out now. I think the area of continuos controller numbers and some idea how to use them..and definitley more knowledge of how to use the environment tools, and ext knobs and faders..There is also pattern sequencer and mute controls from keyboard - Thanks for the information about setting up nodes. Maybe this is not the wat to go? I saw an article about a DJ who used two Mac laptops with a mixer - he used one laptop for sample library and the other running Logic..how would he have integrated the two laptops if he did not use nodes? Hi YADJ Thanks for replying.. I recently purchased a new G4 ( or is it 5 ) Intel Chip MacBook Pro 17' with 2.61 processor / 4K Memory..I bought this after having my G4 MacBook 17" 1.6 processor Motoroal chip - stolen. However I also have the first "Titanium 15" with 1gig processor, and 1000 ram...for the time being this will have to do...Even though the smaller Mac is limited...it still crunches bytes with pretty impressive power..well, it's a mac. I also have Ableton live running through rewire. I would be very interested to know in more detail how Carl Cox had set up between the two CDJs( I am assuming you mean two CD Turntables. In the future when money permits, i plan to purchase a DJ Mixer and maybe turntables. But I have some ideas..as I also have ext devices - as well as, record my own samples. I've recently been getting these samples into the ESX24 and usning the Hyper editor and piano roll to begin to record. I'd like to figure out the best ways to make my own "Kits" ...I see how to set up zones..but to get multiple sounds going at the same time...I wonder if I should set up different Output channels or set up a series ofr ESX24s? Aiming for the future, I would really appreciate the instructions for how to set up as your describing it for Using two laptops and the 2(3)CDJs and how it all gets routed into Live and then live Interfacing wioth Logic. It seems that Live will only record Audio into Logic..is there a work around for getting Live Midi tracks to record into Logic? Hope I'm making myself fairly clear! Thanks for the info!! Jake
