Massive File size during capture HD 4.5

I witnessed hard drive filling file size giving to captured video. When capturing one hour of mini DV video it took 500 Gigs! This is not HD video, it should only take at most 13-14 Gigs. Has anyone come across this and fixed it? My work around has been to capture it in imovie and export as full quality quicktime then import that into FC. Very time consuming.
