FCPX 10.3.4 crashes when sharing Master file
FCPX 10.3.4 crashes during File>Share>Master File. I have reinstalled FCPX, trashed preferences, trashed Libraries, created new Libraries with new clips, run Disk Utility, repaired permissions, restarted the computer, etc. Nothing is working and FCPX just keeps crashing on Share. Please advise! Many thanks! Here is the crash report if it helps: Process: Final Cut Pro [4596] Path: /Applications/Final Cut Pro.app/Contents/MacOS/Final Cut Pro Identifier: com.apple.FinalCut Version: 10.3.4 (303235) Build Info: ProEditor-30323005007000000~1 Code Type: X86-64 (Native) Parent Process: ??? Other than confirming the FCP is indeed responsible for the crash (line 8), the average user—even an expert user—is unlikely to be able to glean anything useful or specific from a crash report (apparently they're not necessarily that specific, anyway). If it's a repeatable crash, you'd be more likely to find someone who can read a crash report at Apple tech support—that is, IF you can get through to an upper-level tech. (Usually entry-level techs will initially insist that you reinstall everything—sometimes including the OS—but in my experience upper-level Apple techs are quite knowledgable and might have some helpful suggestions of things to try). Apparently crashing on Export/Share (to various destinations) is a fairly common malady.. Here's a suggestion that at least one person claimed worked for him (from the FCPX 10.4.7 User Guide): ( https://support.apple.com/guide/final-cut-pro/create-share-destinations-ver9fd008a21/mac ) > Choose Final Cut Pro > Preferences, then click Destinations at the top of the window. > Control-click in the Destinations list, then choose Restore Default Destinations. > Any custom destinations are deleted, and the default set of destinations appears. > For a list of the default destinations, see Intro to sharing projects in Final Cut Pro, at > ( https://support.apple.com/guide/final-cut-pro/intro-to-sharing-projects-ver9d10063a/10.4.7/mac/10.14 ) Worth a try, perhaps..? This video below discusses Sharing a Master FIle–maybe there'll be something of in there of use.. A later video in the same course (#22) discusses Creating Custom Share Destinations (in case that that turns out to be relevant).. I've linked to the course, above..

Thanks for the suggestion! I followed your advice in Preferences/Destinations>Restore and it still crashed. I created a new Library, with new video and same thing happened. I then tried to take the same media and import to iMovie then Share as a "File". While the program didn't crash, this message appeared: Exporting "My Movie" has failed The operation couldn't be completed. (com.apple.Compressor.CompressorKit.ErrorDomain error -1.) Both FCPX and iMovie were both working and there were no crashes up until this week. Again, any advice and suggestions would be appreciated!

So, likely a problem/corruption in the file itself, not the FCPX installation.. There are a lot of references to export errors (error -1 seems to be a generic message), but no definitive solutions that I could find. People have mentioned problems with render files, suggested examining the movie for bad/corrupted frames, and recommended exporting small sections at a time as a test, to see if you can figure out where in the movie there might be corrupted data that's triggering the failure. Beyond that it might be time to go to the FCPX experts @ Apple—usually upper-level techs there are pretty knowledgable & helpful..

If you're experiencing crashes with entirely new libraries and new clips, then you could have a lower-level issue. Have you tried creating a new user account and exporting from there? If that works, you've got some kind of preference problem on your existing user. Otherwise, if it's a more mundane problem with your library, try to delete generated project files with the instructions at #3 here: https://blog.frame.io/2016/09/13/recognize-fix-common-problems-fcpx/ Lastly I would note that you're on an older version of FCP X — 10.4.8 is the current release. This could be the problem, or contribute to it. You can still run 10.4.8 on macOS Mojave if Catalina would cause problems.

Joe and Iain.... Thanks for all your help and suggestions. I have even tried opening a new Library, new event and project and adding a 5 second video, then File>Share>Master File and the same thing happens. I will try the updates as well. Thanks again.

What a difference a day makes....I had recently updated the OS to 10.13.6. After trying every suggestion given me, I did a Time Machine Backup and restored my OS to 10.13.2. Restarted, opened up FCPX and NO crashes when exporting! I tried to solve this for a week! I hope that this helps anyone else with my configuration. Thanks again to all who helped!

Very strange, but glad you've sorted it out. I suspect you've hit a weird edge case, but I also suspect this particular bug won't be fixed, as the current release of FCP X requires macOS 10.14.6 or later. Let Apple know if you can, though?

I have the exact same problem. Good to know you found the solution. Unfortunately I dont have my Time Machine turned on, so I don’t know how to restore OS to previous version. Is it even possible?

It’s going to be hard to roll back without Time Machine, but you might be able to find an original 10.13 installer and then be able to track down a point update. If possible, go to 10.14 instead?
