What is sound and audio? How can we measure it? Why do we perceive it the way we do? Learn the nature and science of musical sound, audio and perception in this pro-level audio course by sound engineer, Joe Albano.
This first course in our Audio Concepts series, is all about the basics of sound and audio. It touches on all the concepts and terminology that audio pros need to know as they dive into into typical, everyday studio activities. This includes the physical properties of sound waves: Amplitude, Frequency and Waveshape which are the elements of sound that are creatively manipulated in recording and mixing.
It also covers sound measurements and demystifies the terminology and acronyms you see in plug-in graphs and mixers, like Hz, kHz, dB and dBfs, that help us find just the right settings for particular tasks. There’s even a section on how our human hearing works. This is the basis for understanding the psychoacoustic perceptions that underpin many classic studio techniques and effects. Then there’s a very brief but serious look at hearing protection which is a very important but often overlooked topic.
So if your looking for a truly deep “sound education", tune into this course and the four other courses in our Audio Concepts series!
- Audio Concepts 101: Audio & Sound Basics
- Audio Concepts 102: Audio Processing Basics
- Audio Concepts 103: Acoustics
- Audio Concepts 104: Delay and Reverb Effects
- Audio Concepts 105: Sound Recording
- Audio Concepts 201: Advanced Audio Editing
- Audio Concepts 202: Mastering In The Box

Good basic place to start. I already have a audio engineering degree but still enjoyed the class. Also the last chapter on saving your ears is a must read.
This is an information packed course covering the absolute basics of sound. My only complaint is that the author/narrator is a bit too monotone.
This course was everything that I look for in a course. It was very well organized and structured, and the concepts explored were very clearly explained with excellent examples. There was no filler; it was concise and to the point. Mr. Albano's courses should be required viewing for anyone interested in audio engineering or music production. He has a real aptitude for teaching.
Excellent course! Very professionally done! It is not one of those courses that wastes a lot of your time by the teacher not being well-prepared. Here the monologue is direct, logical, and thoroughly understandable. The time is used efficiently. There are also many very helpful audio and visual aids and examples along the way. It's hard to imagine it being done any better!
Great Course, very useful, really well explained. The example are very clear and help a lot to understand the concepts. Very nice, great job!
It was a great course, I've been recording, mixing, and some mastering since 2002 have read a few books about it all so I knew some of the things talked about, but it was really cool catching up, and learning some new tools about the trade. Thanks for putting it so well.
I really enjoyed this course and all the others in the Audio Concepts series. I've been dabbling in digital recording for years but never really had a true understanding of the fundamentals but these course changed all that. Joe Albano is an excellent tutor who really knows his stuff. He explains things very clearly in a way that's easy to follow along. I'm now getting a lot more out of my digital audio recording experience thanks to these exceptional tutorials. Thanks to MacProVideo and Joe Albano for making them available. Recommended to anyone who wants a good grounding in basic audio theory and dynamics processing.
It was good to remember such simple principles. If you know nothing about sound, here it is a great way to start.
This is the first "technical audio" video I fully understand. The author describes all the key topics really easy and I as a non musician can understand it. The video is really nice arranged with sound examples, waveforms etc. This is by far the best video series I have ever seen on macprovideo.com. 10STARS
This course was absolutely amazing!! I have been involved in music professionally and as an amateur for about 20 years and though I never realised it, I lacked so many of the basics - which this course covers. Concepts that I have always had problems understanding were very clearly and concisely explained. Simple things like 'at what level of dB SPL you should be mixing and monitoring' have never been explained to me before this, or even a clear understanding of the Fletcher-Munson curves. Thanks so much to Joe Albano and macProVideo. Even after all these years, this is the first course I have done through macProVideo. Wish I had discovered this site before.
I will say it again and again... Joe Albano is incredible. Hands down the best instructor i have come across on this website. HIs Abbey Road course was amazing, and now this series of courses is also incredible. While i have already learned all the basics of audio etc, its been a while, and going through these courses has been an incredible asset. I think any one in audio would benefit from going through this whole series.
The 'Audio Concepts' series of courses were a great watch. I enjoyed them all, gained new skills as well as building upon previous knowledge.
Good course - although I already knew most of it´s content. The subjects are explained well with good graphics and good audio examples. Pretty close to perfect. Thank you!
An amazing course learn so much. Very insightful would suggest this to any beginner audio engineer.
Very useful info here. The section on the ear and preventing hearing loss was very helpful.
If you want to become a professional Producer/Mixer/Engineer, then you have to learn the fundamentals of these occupations. These courses does the perfect job for you to really understand the terminologies, and also gives advice on how to protect you ear. I have watched the Synthesis of Synthesis courses, which thought me the basics of synthesis, and now I can design my own sound knowing which knob does what. I want to thank the Mac Pro team and the instructors, because these are the key. When you learn the basics of a something, then learning the complex functions of it becomes easy. Many people whoa re producing music just jump on to How to learn the Massive synth for example. But they do now know the terminologies and basics of synthesis thus even if they learned Massive they get confused with what the knobs actually do. Before you watch your Massive course or Mixing course first watch the Basics. Audio Concepts series and Synthesis of Synthesis Series as well as Music Theory series. Once again thank you Mac Pro!
I am in the process of learning to use a DAW (in my case, Cubase). This course provided me with some readily useful knowledge in specifically two areas: the meaning and use of the various dB scales, and, perhaps more importantly, the particularities of human hearing in terms of dynamics and frequency. With this course, one can now understand, for example, why instruments may sound different when combined with others in a mix. The instructor was clear and precise without falling into overly technical explanations. The accompanying presentation materials supported the narrative very well. In summary: a top-notch introductory course. 5 stars.
Nothing bad to say, very good course. However maybe little bit more practical examples would have been great?
I am a 13 year old girl and started recording and producing music using Logic X 6 months ago. This course really helped me learn the basics for sound and audio. I learned a lot of terminology so that I can understand the audio world better. Joe Albano is very descriptive and easy to learn from. I am glad he made this group of videos!
This course, even if more technical, was easy to follow and was explained clearly. You will learn all the basics of sounds in no time. Kept my interest until the end.
Great way to revise if you are already familiar with some of the concepts covered.
Clearly explained, logical and practical. I am looking forward to the next series. Well done!
I have been dabbling in audio my entire life but this video series proves that there is always something to learn. Good job, Joe!
Simply awesome. I've just watched the first one of this series and can't wait to watch the following ones.
Excellent course. Not too long, but covers a ton. I figured I'd already know everything contained within from experience, and casually watched it with a few meals. It surprised me, and I managed to pick a few things up I'd never heard before.
Excellent format and engaging presentation of the material. I recommend this to learners at any level (beginner to expert) because there really is something for everyone. Thanks for putting this tutorial together. Looking forward to the next course.
