A songwriter, a Hip Hop artist, a DJ, a studio and only one day to produce song! Possible? We’ll find out! The production team at Dubway Studios are back producing Hired Gun and DJ Boo in another, high-pressure, real-world SongCraft Docutorial™.
Ben Arthur, our intrepid songwriter and musical adventurer is back and in this episode he's straddling his acoustic comfort zone by collaborating with New York-based Hip Hop poet Hired Gun and expert Scratch artist DJ Boo.
Together they compose a song and then quickly hip-hop their way onto the downtown subway to the lower Manhattan studio complex at Dubway. Here the production & engineering team of Mike Cehore and Al Houghton shift into high gear as they muster their consummate skills and experience to nurse this nascent Hip Hop tune to life in the urban musical universe... all in a single day!
In this day-in-the-life Docutorial™ you'll learn how to get that gritty, urban influenced sound: You'll see the mics, the recording setups, iZotope plugins, the sampling tools and the turntable techniques they use to bring this song to life!
So sit in on this marathon session and see how a team of songwriters, producers and engineers work together to get the music out and the job done!

Its amazing how gifted these gentlemen are at adjusting and making the correct tweaks for a given situation. Impressive!
This is a great video to watch if you would like to see engineering at its finest. You will not learn much in the journey to songwriting.
I enjoyed aspects of this tutorial but feel like it was really short and cut out a lot of the song production, mainly the basis of the entire song and even when it showed some recording of of vocals it wasn't much. You don't really get to follow the song being written from the very beginning of its creation which i expected. And because it is a million dollar studio it is harder to equate how to do what they are doing with incredibly expensive mics, preamps and compressors to most peoples available software plug ins and effects. I would like to see more tutorials like this but that follow a producer from the inception of the song to the final listen.
Really cool, you actually follow the full production process for a hip hop track. They have great ideas I personally hadn't though of for example using a SM58 for the recording so the artiste feels like on stage for his take. some stuff you knew and some stuff you will learn from this tut
this is very interesting I liked the step by step process of how they put this record together
Nice Tutorial... it takes you through the studio recording process of a hip hop project, giving you tips on which mic's/compressor/and effects to choose and then editing the project in pro tools.
When I checked out the first few vids, I thought it was sooo hilarious! These guys were in totally different worlds. The producers and songwriters were obviously not familiar with making hiphop.. As the videos progressed, however, everyones professionalism begin to come out!! It was very inspiring to see how everyone worked together to complete this project. The mixing and recording tips and ideas were second to none. This was a really great watch! Good job MacPro
