House Music Legend Olav Basoski dives deep into his secret sound design techniques to show you how he makes tracks that top the charts and rock the dance floor.
We asked house music legend Olav Basoski: How do you create those awesome sounds on your dance tracks? Instead of answering with a text message, Olav produced this incredible Ableton Live tutorial called Designing Sound for Dance Music!
In this specialized set of videos, Olav starts out with a basic dance synthesizer lesson explaining how fundamental synth concepts like analog, FM and function envelopes are extrapolated into the fabric of House Music. From there he shows off his incredible Ableton Live chops by taking us drum-by-drum, sound designing the dance kit and showing us the techniques he uses to recreate a rhythm section that destroys the dance floor.
Next, Olav does a deep dive into pads, synth leads, arpeggiators and bass synthesis, demonstrating in his fun and knowledgeable way how he is the de facto master of audio production in the dance music universe.
So if you want to know the sonic secrets behind Olav’s house mega-hits, plug into this Ableton Live tutorial and you’ll soon be Designing Sounds for Dance Music better than anyone else you know ... that is except the master himself: Olav Basoski!

It's so easy.... and since I saw that tutorial I am trying to create my own sounds. I still can't do it (yet), but I lost that fear or respect of the synths. Great tutorial.
The guy is fantastic, unlike some he does not rush and you can follow quite easily. one of the best presenters ever on Mac Pro video lets hope he has plenty more tutorials to do. 10 out of 10
A good intro to creating basic dance sounds using just Live, delivered with typical Olav warmth! Thought the demo on the difference between subtractive/FM synthesis was really nice.
As usual, Basovski nails it, managing to cover a huge amount of material in a short amount of time whilst making it all seem easy.
Very practical course! Thanks man!
Olav is a great teacher with great personality. Lots of good concepts in this one to help start training the ear for sound design. wish he would gone through writing the tune at the beginning.
Fantastic tutorial man...i love this...you explain everything very well!! Thanks :) :)
the tutorial was amazing. This is exactly what I was expecting to learn from a tutorial with this title. Very explicit for anyone to understand. 5star
Another excellent tutorial,by Olav.
Great tutorial. Very clear and well explained. None of this "just copy what i do" stuff that you get in other tutorials. Thanks!
I like this guy. to the point, clear, good information and demonstration. no fluff or idling - intense and inspiring. Pleasant voice and energy. this goes for all of Olav Basoski's tutorials.
I'm a newbie to ableton and wanna say thanks to Olav for sharing some useful production tips that can be applied to any genre of music.
Excellent tutorial, great for beginners. I hope to see an advanced sound design tutorial in the future from Olav.
ONE OF A KIND...
No more samples, no more presets! From now on I will design my own sounds. Bedankt Olav!! (dutch for thank you Olav) Very, very, very nice....
Olav's tutorials are fantastic. He effortlessly simplifies the complex processes of music production making them easy for people looking to learn to grasp the concepts. Its a real pleasure watching this and all of the Macprovideos that I have had the opportunity to purchase and watch.
The videos are really good. What i am looking forward is vidoes on how to built a complete House Trac with good energy ... and pumpy basslines , also how to use the synth. Would appriciate if you make is downloadable for 64bit OS.
This was simply excellent. Not only are you watching careful construction of basic sounds through the use of two of Ableton's best synths, but you are also witnessing a very subtle hint to efficient workflow. I'm not going to give it away here because you should watch! ...But be aware that Olav is helping you work with purpose as opposed to the usual "noodling" about with synths most of us have done at one time or another. His order of parameter tweaking is very important! Great work MPV! Olav is wonderful!
Great tutorial. I don't know what it is about the way Mr. Basoski teaches but it's very engaging. The information in this tutorial is all rock solid; I knew about a bit of it beforehand, but even in those case I got something out of it. The explanation of FM synthesis is the best simple explanation I've seen of the concept. My only complaint about his previous tutorial was that it got a little aimless towards the end... that is not a problem in this tutorial. It is all killer and no filler.
Really good tutorial. I don't use Ableton Live but it was easy to tranfer the same techniques to Logic. Olav is a great instructor and makes awesome sounds too. I would have liked a couple more examples of pad sounds, and it could have been a bit longer, but its great value for money and goes really well with the Richard Lainhart tuotrials too.
That's a hit, I just love going under a DAW hood to build instruments with economical yet powerful means to get max results. Olav you made synthesis simple, fast & easy, revealing Ableton's incredible potential for any musical genre, keep'em coming! MPV you got great Ableton vids, really enjoy the other ones too, I keep watching them to sink them in deep & get all can, learning to play with this amazing app. in all ways possible. I like the sketch first refine later approach, that's the best.
....simply the best
Excellent tutorial like Olav's others, delivered with humour and clarity and rich with little bits of information that you would never figure out for yourself. I don't make house music but these principals can apply to whatever type of electronic music you are making
