LA composer Gary Guttman is a master at composing music for visuals. In this scoring course, he explains the essence of his craft. If you want to learn how to score music for games, film or TV then watch this course!
Scoring music for TV, film and games is big business. And, if you want to get a piece of the action, you need to know how to compose in a wide variety of styles and moods. That's why we worked closely with experienced LA composer Gary Guttman to create this detailed course. He really knows his stuff!
Gary explains the musical techniques used to create different moods. He shows you the various harmonies composers employ to alter the emotional states of listeners and viewers. You learn all about orchestral colors and rhythms and how to utilize their unique properties to seamlessly work with the visuals for greater emotional impact. This is followed by a serious collection of tutorials that show you how to construct moods like sadness, tension, epic builds, action and much more. There's even a not-to-be-missed tutorial that explains the art of scoring under dialog. This one video is a course unto itself!
Throughout this collection of tutorials, you are provided with Gary's beautiful musical examples, engaging visuals and detailed notated scores designed to show you exactly how these various moods are constructed. So, if you always wondered how those great film and game composers do their cinematic magic, then this course is for you!

I'd recommend this course to anyone with an interest in film scoring, but doesn't exactly know where to start learning. Don't go into this expecting an in-depth course on music theory, as that is not the overall focus of these tutorials. This will most likely require the user to have a basic understanding of scales, modes, and chords to get the most out of it. However, expect to learn the fundamental ways to use each piece of the orchestra to create a range of different emotions. As of right now, this is one of my favorite series I've viewed on AskVideo. This is a must watch!
Excellent. Very accurate and specific. Its important to have music knowledges so you can get the best of it. Hardly recommended!
Yes! This is a very informative, concise and inspiring course. Loads of experience behind this info and the demonstrations. Keep'em coming!
This course almost made my head explode! So many concepts of orchestrating instruments in simple ways to evoke different moods! Any producer who is struggling with this commonly overlooked aspect of their career should watch! Help break down that writers block!
I have been watching and studying many videos, mostly on music, from DAWs and recording, notation programs, music theory, jingles, music for movies, etc. This is my favorite, and the one I have found the most valuable. It is well laid out, well illustrated, and demonstrates many important points in an easy to understand manner. It also has many ideas to spur creativity.
This course was sooooooooo helpful! Perfect examples and straight to the point. Probably my favourite course I have taken on here so far :)
The course is amazingly well done: I come from a Masters degree in composition so everything is clear and natural: I really enjoyed the course. I don't know what could be the course for a "dummy" in composition: in any case I think it could be a great font of inspiration to deepen your knowledge.
Very intriguing course. It's fascinating to see the powerful effect music has in creating mood. And even more fascinating to learn the basics of how it is accomplished. And most importantly, I believe this course is relevant to any composer, not just film composer. I took the course to get ideas for my composing tool kit and came away with a ton of great information and insights. Thanks for a job well done.
This is the greatest music tutorial I have ever seen. It provides a key to unlock music for new students that no other tutorial has ever offered. Mr Guttman should do more tutorials, he is a fantastic teacher
It was a very good course to cover the basics of scoring a film. Basic but very effective. Must do.
Greatr Course! A lot of examples, very well explained, very clear in every detail, many tips and tricks for a better understanding different styles of scoring. Very useful for young students that want to start practicing scoring for visuals.
Short and to the point. Mr. Guttman addresses practically every question the novice would want to know (how to create mood using harmony, using rhythm, using combinations of instruments) and demonstrates these techniques succinctly and surprisingly easily, that is, with a bare minimum of instrumentation. This more than anything really helps the student focus in on the concepts rather than feeling burdened or overwhelmed by a massive score. Very inspiring! I really liked the use of simple still images as indicators of the mood the music enhances. When I produce my portfolio, I intend to do the same. Well done!
A great rundown of the instruments, notes and harmony used to create modes in film scores.
Great work!!! Please do more courses on this topic! BRAVO!
An Awesome course that was very well presented and offered extremely useful informations. This course was the reason i signed up for a one year subscription plan - please add more courses by Gary Guttman! I really liked the hands on approach and was able to apply the presented concepts to my own compositions quickly.
Excellent course and well presented. Great material and very helpful. The section with changing emotions and no melody was eye opening. Nice job!
Great introduction to orchestration and film scoring compliments other videos such as enhanced realism By Schwartz. Teacher takes you slowly step by step and gives a methodical process that expanded my composition. I ma a song writer and realized the importance of the 5th Beatles in any mix... I am watching this SLOWLY implementation is the key. Can't wait for more chapters of this valuable yet not too analytical approach.
Fantastic course. It's a lot of work to score anything, but the basic concepts are here. Vey useful information, it really gave me a perspective on how to do this.
Very nice course about the basics of film scoring moods. It helps to understand how music for media born with really little effort. In any case you have to be a quite well trained musician to understand and get practise with these topics. I found the course an essential introduction, maybe too short and to simple for advanced composers.
Fantastic course. I studied Gary's Secret Composer (which I keep referring to) and this Mac Pro course (delivers the materials in a fresh way. This is more than just a course on creation of moods. The beauty of this course lies in seeing Gary in action and to learn orchestration secrets from this master of orchestration. If you want to buy just 1 course from Macpro video, let this be it!
It's difficult to pitch a course like this at the right level but even seasoned composers I think will get some nuggets from this. My only disappointment is that there is room for much more exploration of the techniques used in scoring for picture that I hope is covered in subsequent videos because this really is a very good starter.
I thought that this course was great at explicitly outlining harmonic techniques used in motion video scoring. I think there could be an advanced class with tutorials to further expand on these concepts, but this approach is seldom seem with other tutorials involving music theory and how it works with the entertainment industry.
This course is probably the best course I've taken. Garry's method is very effective, concise and easy to understand and follow. The course content and his use of audio and visuals makes this course a must watch.
This course was all i needed to enhance my music now it has feeling. I am looking forward to more courses from this instructor.
I love this Music Scoring 101 series and love where it is going. For me, it's one of the best series so far. Great instructor. 10/10 Please make this a vast series! I would love to see the subject of classic animation scoring covered in particular, in detail. Thank you and please MORE!
I rated this course 5 stars, only because 10 stars wasn't available! I am 70 years old, I have been studying music my whole life. I have read over 100 text books on composition and watched countless videos on the subject. This course, Music Scoring 101 by Gary Guttman, is hands down the best tutorial (book, video or otherwise) I have ever encountered! More usable information is taught in this course than in any 10 books. The presentation is as good as the content. I was so impressed that, halfway through, I Googled Gary Guttman and found that he is very accomplished as a film composer and has a course, "Secret Composer," which I promptly bought ($39). I haven't gotten into it that much yet, but it looks excellent so far. Just one other thing, as raving as this review is, some of you must think I am his father! The truth is, I wouldn't know the guy if I met him on the street! We have no connection whatsoever. I just highly recommend this course and hope he comes out with many more!
A really terrific course! Clear, informative, and inspiring. Highly recommended.
This is a good start to basics of setting moods. I would love to see this done from a different perspective. Maybe just as much sound design as music. And describe plug-ins used. Thanks for presenting this avenue.
This course was excellent! I most enjoyed the simplicity by which it was presented.
I am very pleased with this tutorial, because exhaustively covers most introductory aspects that a music composer for film and television should know. Very good examples! Amazing sound, graphics & animations. Thanks
Fantastic! More of it, please!
OMG I have no word to express how grateful I am. This course answered so many questions I had in orchestra music. I was amazed during the course how a simple thing can change the whole mood. Thank you so much I want definitely more! :)
Awesome course, but it's just a start. I want more! Continue with mood-specific courses, one course per mood.
Wow. Simply Wow. This course has filled in a key aspect in my orchestration and arranging knowledge as a novice composer. Thank you so much Gary! Please, Please, Please do more. You will have my money
This was a Spectacular course. hopefully there will be more about composition & scoring
I picked up the course in bits over a few days. I will go back and jot down notes. I found the information and the instructors' approach to be just what I needed. It was inspiring. I will take each of the exercises and make my own mock ups to continue the study of these templates for moods. Big thanks to the instructor. PLEASE produce more like this!
This is a great tutorial Gary. Please, please do a follow up!
This is a very good intro to film scoring, a "crash course", as Gary says in the beginning. A very short crash course, but good material and good examples and break down of what's going on. I recommend it for beginners to film scoring.
Gary knocked it out of the park on this one. This course demystifies the topic, bridges a HUGE gap and makes film scoring so much more approachable. He breaks down everything so clearly and teaches with more of a "let's really get you speaking the language and expressing yourself" approach. If I don't produce results after this video… it's on me… He's given me all the tools I need to really do this. Gary, Thank You So Much… and please create more courses like this… take us farther into this beautiful, exciting world that you've shown us. I'm inspired and excited by this great tutorial. I can't wait for more…
When I saw this course announced I had to immediately watch it and I was not disappointed. A very inspiring insight into orchestral composition and orchestration. I wish there were more courses on this topic especially by Gary Guttman.
I’ve been through nearly 30 MacProVideo courses at this point - all of which I’ve loved; Music Scoring 101 is the only one I’ve watched twice. Gary makes takes the enormous task of scoring, simplifies it in the clearest of ways, and makes his teaching immediately actionable. I’ve spent an inordinate amount of time poring over theory resources. After this course, now I know how to take that knowledge and pull the trigger. Super grateful! Thanks, Gary!
I've said it in 1000 reviews before and I will say it again. I think I learned more from this website then I did in four years of music college.
Awesome. This succinctly points me in the right basic direction for each of the styles I typically would like to write for. I agree that it helps to have some basic music theory. As trained musician - but not necessarily a good composer this was absolute gold!
Fantastic course! I've been looking for something like this for a very long time. It helps to have a basic understanding of a bit of theory and harmony, but it isn't strictly necessary. I hope there are more in this series...
