Chord progressions give your song some emotion and direction. They are the canvas on which to build great melodies and rhythms! Learn all about creating them in this 30-tutorial course from our Music Theory expert, Gregg Fine...
Chord progressions in music are a lot like the canvas an artists paints on - a multi-purpose canvas, that is. That's because a songwriter can give his or her song a totally different feeling just by altering a few chords under its melody and take the listener on a completely new journey.
In this in-depth course about building chord progressions, Gregg Fine takes you on a harmonic voyage and shows you, step by step, how chord progressions are created and how they can evolve. You learn how to build progressions using techniques such as chromatic passing chords, borrowed harmonies, chords with added tones, and so on. Your ear gets a workout with musical examples that Gregg has created especially for the course. As you progress through this harmonic journey, you get familiar with various types of progressions and you find out how and why knowing how to transpose your chords to a different key is so useful. Gregg also shows you how modulation works and reveals the all-important pivot chord as a way to gently move your listener from one section of your song to another.
So open you ears wide, and get ready to listen deeply to the way chord progressions work inside a song! And while you're here, make sure to brush up on your musical theory with Gregg Fine as your guide.

I have been doing music for long time. Read theory of and on. This is very a very compact and good course that you should review and rehearse until you know all the stuff in it by heart. That will improve you as a musician - guaranteed. i found the topics very well explained and with good examples.
I started the series with this one. Gregg is so much a specialist, I soon understood I needed the other courses first to fully understand this one. I followed them all and enjoyed every one of them. Great in depth tutorial.
Great course, very well done. Many topics, well explained with a lot of examples. Very useful for students that want to start practicing with harmony.
I have watched most of Gregg Fines tutorials. They are good, though I am not a fan of his delivery style nor graphics. This course, however, really opened my ears (even though it suffers the aforementioned irritations). He develops the construction of chord progressions in a perfectly logical manner, but more than that, for each example progression he demonstrates, even though they are just piano, you can hear the hits that have been made with these progressions. The theory he gets into could be fairly heavy for novices, but the applications can give the uninitiated lots of ideas to explore and develop their own progressions - so persevere, the course is worth it Thanks Gregg!
I am an experienced bass player / guitar player but nowadays I focus on experimental electronic music. I needed to go back to get some basic progression theory that may be useful to my compositions. This is very helpful basis course. Well put out and I learned a couple of small new things with are very helpful.
A superb course, I learnt a lot from it
This was the best course out of the six music theory foundation classes covered by Gregg. The amount of concept involving chord progressions to my knowledge seemed comprehensive compared to some of the other classes. I would recommend this for any music producer or singer/songwriter.
Clear. With simple harmonic examples, and visual representations of chord progressions. Well worthwhile for those with early to intermediate music theory knowledge. Thanks! :)
Lots of stuff in this course. I'm having trouble with theory and still have after this course. Would have like few simple tricks to assimilate and learn those concepts. But overall, this course is very complete and pretty easy to follow.
To start with, I am wishing that I knew this concept when I started as a guitarist 40 years ago. The tutor makes this course easy to follow, easy to understand and enjoyable to learn from. Definitely a 5* tutorial
GREAT course. I've pretty much learned a lot from watching this video. I have greatly improved on my chord progression changes as well. i would really like to see more explanation on chords if possible.
Fantastic once again. I have followed the Music Theory series, and all I can say is I know more now about the theory of music than I have ever. There is so much valuable information here that I'd have to come back to these tutorial a few more times to get it all in. The course is worth every second spent.
A useful guide to chord and progressions, etc. Very handy for going back to basics and brushing up on your theory!
An excellent way to learn and review all the theory essential to songwriting. With examples, exercises built in, and a well presented cumulative knowledge base, this course took my writing to a more interesting harmonic level. Parallel diatonic minor chord substitutions are so useful and prevalent in music... You will hear the things you learn here everywhere!
Fantastic, along with the rest of the courses in this series.
It's far the best course in music theory i've ever had. Took me three days to finish and understand all the concepts, but it will give you another level of music understanding! really worth!!!
The course as a whole was very informative, and I learned of new concepts and ideas to try with my chord progressions in the future.
This was another good tutorial with a lot of good info. I will put this to use and experiment with more complex chord progressions.
Awesome. It's a must to make your life easier writing tunes. My advice is to have a keyboard right in front of you as you watch this tutorial. Great fun.
If you want to understand music theory here’s your chance. You will learn!
Good course. Good progression coverage and approach from different angles.
This is my favourite video so far! Awesome job Gregg!
This course was just amazing!! Fine really brought all the techniques from the other courses in this series together! Just about everything is bookmarked! GREAT job MacPro!!!!
