Ever wonder why certain melodies stick with you forever while others trigger an intense emotional response? Why does this happen? Well, it’s not accidental! In this tutorial you’ll learn the theory and the art of melody writing...
Melodies are magical. They’re what we remember and love most about the music. And, they are the foundation of every kind of music from ancient Gregorian Chant to Hip Hop.
In this entertaining tutorial by composer Gregg Fine, you’ll learn how melodies are constructed and discover all the parameters of melody making beginning with notes and scales. Next you’ll see how major and minor scales are constructed with their unique patterns of whole- and half-steps. From there Professor Fine demystifies accidentals: those odd little symbols that live alongside musical notes on the page. After that there’s a section where you’ll get into musical intervals: those vibrating building blocks of melody and harmony! Then Gregg modulates it up a key or two by focusing on some exotic scales like Pentatonic, Blues, Octatonic and Augmented.
Ever hear of these: Dorian, Lydian, Aeolian and Phrygian? These are some of the mystical musical modes! You’ll explore all 7 modes derived from the scale and learn how they are constructed and how they can add another layer of color to you songwriting palette!
So if you’re new to composing or just want to make your current songs more melodic, this tutorial on Melody will get you humming right along! And, keep a lookout for the rest of the Music Theory series on Harmony, Rhythm and Song Form. Together they teach you everything you need to know about the fundamentals of music theory and songwriting!

Mr.Fine presents the information in a very easy to understand manner compared to other courses on music theory I have seen elsewhere.
Great course. The way you break everything down makes much more sense than trying to read a book to learn theory or look at diagrams. Having verbal instruction with visuals on modes and their relationships to scales helped a lot
Great introduction to melody. I never got what a "mode" was before this, and didn't know about symmetrical scales. Perhaps it might be a bit quick for complete beginners, but it's well explained with good examples.
I found the explanations and descriptions of scales, modes and melody construction very clear and the musical examples enlightening. This is basic stuff but it definitely improved my grasp of the essential material that it covers. Will go back to some lessons for ideas.
It was really well explained, really enjoyed the modes explanation
I started this series with the chord progression, but needed some refreshment on the melody part. In the end I followed the whole music theory series. Very useful and a fun way to learn everything in depth.
Very nice course, very well explained with interesting examples. All the topics are fully explained. Great!
Very good course, very clear and very well explained. Examples are very clear and funny. The topics are explained exhaustively
Top notch. All of Gregg Fine's classes are extremely helpful. He's thorough and informative. I took many notes and will revisit his classes again...
Glad I came across this course. While some knowledge on theory was familiar to me, was amazed at how much I didn't know. This course will lead me to more independent study, which is much needed. Glad this one jogged the old brain on the importance of theory!
I now have a better understanding of scales and their types, which define certain music styles I've always wanted to learn and there are some really useful terms put simply into perspective here I could never get my head around. These theory tutorials are straight forward, easy to understand and now I'm looking forward to the next 102 course on Harmony :)
This course gave me all the knowledge i was looking for.. it is hard to find everything on youtube by Your own.. So I am glad I found ASK videos
This course caught me up on 3 1/2 decades of being away from any type of formal music training. I ALWAYS retained some basic knowledge of what I learned, but this course has prepared me to CONFIDENTLY go to the next level of information, regarding music theory.
A good intro to the world of melody, and how to use scales to do so. Well explained and with audio examples, so you can learn to listen to the different flavours.
Music Theory 101: Melody is a hybrid between the basic concepts of melody and the fundamentals of music theory. It does not go in depth above basic concepts in either subject area, but it does cover a wide range of ideas that are useful for understanding the role of melody in your compositions.
Fantastic course! The course is laid out in a way that is easy to understand, while covering a lot of ground. Can't wait to watch the others and gain this valuable knowledge!!
Good to repolish the basics again and to learn it in English to follow up on several tutorials in English on the internet.
These tutorial are literally life change the theory you in in colleges
Yet another info packed tutorial, would be nice to retain all that info in one pass. Thanks to the yearly pricing plan from MPV I don't have to.
Very nice for understanding Caracter an expressions and his relations with Scales...
Having been buried in audio production for so long, I haven't been on the music writing side in ages. I need to revisit what I thought i already new. This is great, simple yet complete study. Thanks
I found the best way to really learn from these videos, if you have no knowledge of music theory is to take notes and review after every video. Don't rush to the end. If you don't understand something, watch the video again. These tutorials are amazing and have helped me understand the basics.
great course here,I done some music theory at school, but that was a long time ago,ha,ha Gregg is a great teacher, carefully explaining each part of the course Will revisit this course,as there are some parts I would like to refresh on,ha,ha
This course is on point when covering the fundamentals of music theory. It explained concept in a way it was very easy to understand. I am looking forward to the rest of these videos.
Exemplary way of teaching. Professional, clear, and fun. Excellent time management. Five stars!
I've just been through a truly educative journey on the theory behind music melody - and it's only just started. Moving on to the next one on Harmony. These courses are super good and worth a great deal.
Another handy course from Gregg covering quite a bit of ground, with nice examples of scales and modes to get you started on exploring what can be a confusing subject. Love his teaching style.
I reviewed this video to get a better understanding of how melodic structures relate to harmony. Though there were live examples, I do not believe I was left with a sense of how the melody was chosen. Had I not been a Music Major, I would not know or understand some of the terminology that the instructor uses. I find it immensely important that the instructors remain aware of the level of student that they have (audience) and the knowledge that the student may or may not already possess. If a term is going to be introduced, there should be a footnote that explains the terminology.deo to get a better understanding of how melodic structures relate to harmony. Though there were liv examples, I do not believe I was left with a sense of how the melody was chosen.
Excellent coverage of the modes - not just a review of scales and intervals for beginners.
So much information in an easy to follow format. Look forward to watching the next theory tutorials... Good Work!!
I have really fallen behind on my music theory in the last few years but this has helped me to remember a lot of the concepts that had slipped my mind. Super keen to check out some of the other theory tutorials.
Good tutorial I will be sure to experiment with different modes to add a different vibe to my melodies.
Was a good tutorial covering the basics while not being too boring
Well, perfect for beginners or if you don't have any theory knowledge. Could have some more examples on uses of scales, although the modes have plenty of it.
Amazing! Very well done. Precisely what you need if you are new to music theory and need a good place to start. Highly recommended.
Great video on intro to theory! Maybe add some more examples of modal creations at the end of the lesson. For example a demonstration of two guitarists creating modal tension in real time.
Good tutorial on melody and scales. Wish it would focus more on melodies like the title suggests, but it is definitely a great tutorial. This whole series is great and Im in the middle of watching the whole thing, even though most of this is repetition for me. This series is great for both beginners and pros!
Very simple to understand, but would love if it went further in depth into these topics, however overall very informative and straight forward.
This course covers several different topics of the melody. Would be nice to see this course broken up into smaller sections while spending more time on each section. Still a valuable course.
This was great, even as a review for someone with exposure to music writing. The explanation of modes is intuitive and ultimately unlocks the doors to expressing emotion in your compositions.
I have been avoiding learning modes for years. This tutorial really demystified them for me. They're just scales played from different tonic or root note. Thanks
Good introductory course!! Very basic at first but once it started getting into modes, my interest in the tutorial definitely picked up!
great intro to music theory. well taught, great information, easy to understand, highly recommend to anyone interested in music
I found this a useful course, particularly the sections on the various types of scales and the modes, which as a guitarist I've been trying to get to grips with for years!
I like the playfull approach to the subject. Music theory for me is not easy, but this course made a real difference. Thanks!
Cool Great coat course, finaly learning a little more about Melody and this is short and sweet not to drawn out. strieght to the point.
Very Basic Intro to theory... Great explanation of the modes. Great job tying the modes to the types of moods they can create.
it would help if there were exercises involved, and a short quiz to see if you've retained the teachings...
I think this course should have a different name due to the fact "melody" is only covered in the first few vids.. Neglecting that, this was a phenomenal tutorial!! Bookmarked just about everything!!!
This course taught me so much in regards to melody. There was SO MUCH that I didn't know and this course helped me clear all of it up nice and fast.
A very basic introduction to scales and modes, but it is well presented. This course would be very helpful for someone who is confused by scales and modes and what they actually mean.
This tutorial is just perfect. It explains in details all the modes, a very complex subjetc to beginers like myself. It also gives an overview of how they sound. Also great stuff about intervals. It's just great.
This is most important tutorial in the whole library. Without a melody there's no song.
The tutorial is laid out very simple but with TONS of info. Learned a whole lot without having to seat in a class with a boring instructor.
Very good tutorial clear complete well written and presented does not waste time of covered material from bottom up. Tutorial has good value especial beginners and novices. Recommended for serious students hobbyist and aspiring musicians. Much easier to understand and comprehend fairly quickly along with the ability to review and re-review at my own personal convenience and pace After original rock start of downloads all went well. One important issue while trying to decide on what tutorials and doing the necessary to pre review the outlines for content. The annoying pop up asking what are you waiting for is offensive and waste valuable time by taking the consumer off message and concentration. So much I almost decided not to move forward. The HD Download ordering process need attention in my opinion. It downloaded the same lesson twice. The good part is Mr Sitter assured me that it would be addressed timely it was.
Very educational. Easy to follow!
I am extremely satisfied with these tutorials! They are very well written, fun to watch, and explained in a way that's easy to understand. Also, when I went on to learn more and compared them to other music theory books/ DVDs, I found that this tutorial had already covered a large majority if not all of what the other books/music theory DVDs had to offer. Thanks for the great tutorials! :) I would definitely recommend these to anyone looking to learn music theory.
was good... it could have been a bit longer but good never the less
Fantastic, i love the way the concept are explained, i love the "let's review" part...great teacher and great argument!! Thanks for the video!!
Good explanation of melody.
I've only recently tried to get to grips with some theory, so when this tutorial appeared on MPV I was downloading it in seconds. I'm now on my second go through this tutorial- and it probably won't be my last! I'm a guitarist, so the section on scales amd modes is great for me. I've tried to understand modes before, but IMHO this tutorial has been the best! I've now got an idea what they are, and hopefully when I watch again a few times, I'll figure out how to use them! I have quite a few other MPV tutorials, and I think Gregg Fine's presentation style is one of the best. I have more of his tutorials now too. He walks that fine line between keeping it simple (and I need simple!) but doesn't come across as patronising. Well worth the money.
Excellent tutorial. I learned a lot, and much more than I thought possible in 67 minutes of instruction.
really straightforward and well said! really needed this. thanks the 5th star is missing due to the lack of design/ graphics + sound effects. dont blame me, blame the other perfectionist - guys from the other tutorials :) great job Gregg!
excellent, excellent !!!
Very well presented. The visual nature of the concepts make retention much better. Maybe a little too basic for me but a great review and there is always some tidbit I may not have already known.
Well worth viewing. This is the first time I've been able to grasp the concept of modes! Greg Fine does a great job of simplifying what others have made complex.
Really great. So good for review and as a beginner, tis really is an easy to learn video. I watched and am looking forward to some additions. I think this was one of the clearest examples I've seen. Many books tell you the info but this video lets you not only see it. but Hear it. That makes it work. Gregg Fine is very easy to understand. Thanks again MPV Victor
Hi, I've been a fan of both Macprovideo and Lynda.com when it comes to learning about music and computers. Now, with the addition of a series on real theory, I'd say Macprovideo is going to take the edge over everyone else as my absolute favorite! Please keep the great content coming. I'd love to see more about great songwriting and lyrics too.
