Have you heard Sarah McLachlan's music? Then you've heard Chris Potter's skills—he's Sarah McLachlan's Engineer!
In this 4-hour tutorial by Sarah McLachlan's Lead Engineer Chris Potter, you'll learn how pop music is mixed to get that Big, Pro Sound. In this tutorials Chris reveals the secrets he uses to make Sarah's chart-topping hits sound as amazing as they do.
Chris starts with the basics such as arranging the tracks for a logical mixing progression, including creating Mix groups with Busses, Aux Inputs, and Effects Returns. Once your set up and ready to mix, Chris next walks you through the process of checking phase before getting into a detailed section on mixing drum kits to make them cut through the other elements of the song.
After tightening up the drums, Chris moves on to show you how to mix in the Bass, Acoustic Guitars, Electric Guitars, and also Keyboards. You'll learn deep secrets about mixing instruments that until now were only available to people who spent years apprenticing in a pro recording studio!
If your song has vocals, you will devour the next section of this tutorial as Chris walks you through the process of mixing Pop vocals. You'll learn about De-Essing a vocal, Compression, and adding the correct Effects to create a signature Pop sound. Next you'll move on to do a background vocal treatment that perfectly compliments the lead vocals in the song. For this information alone the tutorial is worth watching ...
The tutorial concludes with a detailed section on outputting your mix including bouncing techniques, alternative mixes, backing up your session, and even preparing the mix to hand it off to a mastering technician.

Pretty Good Tutorial ...I thought the section on how to prepare your mix to print to disk were very helpful as well as how to prepare your mix for someone else/a mastering engineer.
This is a brilliant tutorial. Chris lets everybody participate in his thinking process and gives you invaluable insight into his mixing process. This knowledge is very intimate and, while you don't become a master mixer over night, it teaches you how to think like one so you can try and apply this thinking to your own productions. Chris uses Pro Tools and a lot of his favorite plugins, but it really doesn't matter what he uses as his knowledge and the way he explains things can be applied to any other DAW and plugins of the same type. --- Chris takes you through his mixing process step by step. How he listens to the raw project, how he cleans up little glitches, how he organizes the project and then how he starts working, mixing and applying effects. --- Very detailed insight: In one video, Chris uses a specific compressor, and he tells you what he likes about it, then he explains WHAT he does to a sound and WHY he does it. With this understanding, you can basically go and apply it to your own compressor as you now know what it is to look out for and what to do with the compressor to make a part sound better. This is simply brilliant.
Interesting, well explained and deep enough. I liked it
ok greate info. help me a lot thanks guys
Great Video! Chris is easy going and helpful. He covers the important points and shows off some great tricks. I highly recommended this Tutorial.
Chris Potter does an excellent job from set up to bouncing in this tutorial. Even though I use Logic I found a lot of useful info. I gave it five stars because I'm sure I I used PT I would appreciate him letting me know what plugs, he uses and how he uses them.
This tutorial is fantastic! Probably the best I've seen on mixing. I am a Logic Pro 9 user, but the mixing techniques Chris uses in this tutorial can easily be applied to Logic Pro as well as Pro Tools. I would highly recommend this to all Pro Tools and Logic Pro users.
Absolutely amazing! It's obvious that Chris has a depth of tips and tricks that go way beyond the "tip of this iceberg." Hugely informative and applicable across any workstation platform. I've come across a LOT of info via the web re: mixing, and this puts it all (and MORE) into an easily accessible format. Killer song also! This is my 7th Mac Pro video, and you guys never cease to amaze me with the great topics, content, and trainers!!! THANK YOU!!!!
Thanks Chris for the wealth of knowledge thats easy to understand. I recommend this for all Pro Tools users. I love the multiple reverb trick. This video answers a lot of questions about mixing.
EXCELLENT TUTORIAL. LIKE TO SEE IT DONE FOR LOGIC, BUT ALL THE TECHNICAL INFO APPLIES.
This is my seventh download from macProVideo so far. All are great but this one just shines through for me. Its brilliant!! Chris does a wonderful job in these videos. Thanx for all this great info Chris. I am not a Pro Tools user, I use Logic 8 but the information hear spans all DAWs. Whatever you use for your production you will learn LOADS from these videos. Great job. Thanx to all at macProVideo John
