Do you want to build a recording studio? Where do you begin? This course demystifies the planning process and teaches how to get your studio designed and built!
Ask anyone who has tried to design a recording studio and they'll tell you: it's a very complicated process that requires a lot of planning. There are many moving parts involved. So, where do you begin? Well, first you've got to understand the various stages of the studio design process, and that’s exactly what this first course in our Studio Design and Construction series will teach you!
It begins with a section called Design First Steps. This is where you learn how to transform your studio dream into reality by focussing your thinking on the kind of studio you want to design. You see how to define your goals, plan your budget and zero in on your musical philosophy so that your new studio will be in sync with your vision.
Next up is a section on Site Location: Choosing a proper location is key. Whether it’s in your house or in a commercial building, the location of your studio, and how it interacts with the space around it, is one of the most important decisions you will make. This course explains the different design criteria studio designers employ to pick the optimum place to build.
But that's just the beginning: You also get a primer on acoustics and how to design your studio's acoustical treatment. You learn about Room Modes, Absorption & Diffusion characteristics, Reverb Time, and more. There’s also a section on the initial construction techniques to help you layout your control room, live room and isolation room.
After finishing this course be sure to watch the other courses in our Studio Edge series to help you finish designing and constructing your recording studio.
- The Studio Edge 101: Planning A Recording Studio
- The Studio Edge 102: Constructing and Fine Tuning Your Studio
- The Studio Edge 103: Case Study: The Home Studio

Good technical info in later sections. A bit tedious in beginning (poor eye contact - too busy a background). Could use more illustrations or examples in real rooms. Worth watching overall.
This course has been ideal for an introduction to setting up a home studio at my house. Jim Pavett is one of the most impressive instructors for MacProVideo, and there is no shortage of them. The course outlines basic home and commercial studio knowledge, which looks to pick up in the next course on studio construction!
A comprehensive and detailed course on studio design by Jim Pavett. I am looking forward to watching the other courses in this series.
This guy obviously knows his stuff, clear and well presented, wasn't so keen on the 'product' placement came across as an infomercial at times but generally pretty good.
Interesting overview of some of the initial things you should know when trying to set up a recording studio, anywhere from simple home set-ups to large pro studios.
I definitely learned a lot about acoustic treatment and what NOT to do when building/converting my studio. I really enjoyed when the host made examples. I wish there were more of them!
A little slow in the beginning there but got into some really helpful concepts later on. Definitely looking forward to watching the other tutorials in this category!
This course is great anyone planning on building a studio or already has a studio should take this course it is so informative it made me rethink my design and change a few things for the better
Real Good Tutorial for design a studio on few levels. from doing it in your home to purchasing space out side your home. theres some good info here you can use. Jim Pavett does a good job.
Learned lots of new and interesting info on the matter. The break down of the iso rooms, absorption and diffusion is worth the course alone.
Simply wonderful and and an amazing amount of useful info. Great presentation with in depth explanations and real world examples! Very well done.
