nice post! unfortunately, the grouping field seems not working work for me. I submit some information there, but when Iam searching for it (exact letters and words) iTunes doesn't show any results.

I have iTunes 10.1.2, Snow Leopard with latest updates installed.

Thx!
Actually, the solution is pretty easy: The groupings column MUST be visible in the list view. That's the first of the four views. Enter it and press Apple-J, check "Grouping". Then you can search for the grouping in all views even if in the other views, grouping is not shown. I use Album View (the second view) and do not have grouping shown there. But any column you want to be able to search MUST be visible in list view!
Hope that helps :)

thank you for the direct answer. you were really helpful, and made my classification in iTunes even better. I only had to check the grouping column in the list view and then works everywhere, indeed. cheers!

Thanks for a great explanation of Grouping in iTunes. When you were discussing classical works with multiple parts you said, "The opus number, the key as well as the nickname are only entered in the Grouping field, thus not cluttering the album or the track names!" What do you use for track names when dealing with classical works? For instance, assuming you have "Mozart: Symphony #40 In G Minor, K 550 - 1. Molto Allegro," would you place "Mozart: Symphony #40 In G Minor, K 550" in the Grouping and just leave "1. Molto Allegro" as the track name?

Yes, exactly. If the Symphony Nr. 40 was part of an album with multiple Symphonies on it, I might write
"Nr. 40 - 1. Molto Allegro". But if it is the only symphony on the CD I would definitely leave out the Opus Nr. and only write the name of the movement, because all the rest is in the Grouping tag.
The main reason for this being that it helps de-clutter the track list because names are shorter.

Just came across this thread, and thought I would tag on, even though 18 months late.

I have an iTunes/iPhone/iPod tagging issue that I have not been able to resolve. Would appreciate any input:

On both my iPhone 4 and my iPod Classic, it does not seem possible to search for an artist's name unless the artist is an "album artist". I have MANY compilations, both from purchased music albums, and from self made compilations put together from different sources, and on all these the "album artist" info field for each song in the compilation is "Various" or "Various Artists".

When on iTunes, on my computer, it is easy to search for all songs by a particular artist, whether that song is from that artist's album, or whether the song is from within a compilation. HOWEVER, when searching for a particular artist on the iPhone or iPod, the songs will not show up in the search unless they are on an album on which ALL the songs are by that artist - i.e., where that artist is designated the "album artist".

I have tried playing around with the info fields and sorting fields, checking and unchecking the "compilation" field, etc. I have also tried changing the album artist to the song artist for each song in a compliation - but while that makes the song artist searchable it also creates multiple entries in the Album list - one entry for each song, and that is too high a price to pay - too messy and untenable.

One work-around might be to make a playlist for each compilation and then break up the compilations into separate made-up albums (just name the made-up album with the artist's name), one for each artist. However, there are hundreds of compilations, and that would be an enormous work load to do that break up. Also this would result in many albums with just one or two or three songs (since many artists in the compilations only have one or two or three songs on my entire iTunes database) .

Have I missed something? Short of breaking up all my compilation albums, is there some way to be able to find, on the iPhone and iPod, ALL songs of a particular artist, even when some of the songs are in compilations?
