Chords infuse music with color and emotion. Learn the theory and magic behind creating chords in this Harmony tutorial by Master Composer and Arranger Gregg Fine.
If melody is the story of a song, then harmony is the feeling behind the story. To create songwriting magic, you need to know both. In this Harmony tutorial by chordiologist Gregg Fine, get the whole story of harmony and learn how you can enhance the color and emotion of your tunes.
Harmony starts with triads: the basic building blocks for chords. In this tutorial you’ll learn how to combine intervals to change the nature and color of the chords in your productions. Watch and listen as Gregg shows how to build major, minor, diminished and augmented chords, along with their inversions. You'll also see and hear how added tones can add a new dimension to simple chords.
Professor Fine then introduces you to extensions, suspended chords, power chords and arpeggios. You learn all about the Circle of 5ths and how it can be used to create chord progressions. Understanding progressions is “key” to building a successful and satisfying song. Gregg wraps it all up by taking you to another dimension as he teaches you how to create well-designed progressions, modulations, pedal tones, drones and ostinatos.
So if you're looking to get a better understanding of that musical feeling, this insightful tutorial on Harmony by Gregg Fine will take you there.

What a wonderful course! It's smartly laid out and the illustrations add a humorous angle that makes the lessons so fun. The audio examples are helpful to understanding the material by getting you to actually hear the sounds of the concepts presented. 5-Stars!
I love this particular tutorial in the series. It explains the circle of fifths quite well and also chord progressions in a fresh and practical way.
I started this series with the chord progression, but needed some refreshment on the other parts. In the end I followed the whole music theory series. Very useful and a fun way to learn everything in depth. Sometimes the chords are still a mystery, but practice makes perfect.
Great course, very well explained. I've taken the quiz and I have another point of view about a question. I don't think that a b11 could be considered an extension, it is equal to a major third.
Simple, clear, easy, understandable, VERY good!!! Thanks a lot. I check the next part asap!
This site is the best. I am getting a CRASH COURSE in WHATEVER I NEED to become PROFICIENT IN. I feel like NEO in the Matrix training program.... MORE! MORE! MORE!
This course has been as beneficial to my music theory studies as the harmony course I am taking at a private school right now. Given the length of time, this tutorial covers a broad range of beginners and intermediate harmonic concepts that give you a solid foundation in this specific area of focus.
Very informative dont know what I woud do without these tutorials.
Great course on music theory and how chords are build. Helped me to understand music basics.
Another outstanding course, and a good follow-up to the melody course. There is so much I have learned. And I have decided to go back to both courses before progressing to the Rhythm course, for getting the best possible out of these courses.
Great definitions, clear and concise explanation in a way that is fun and immediately useful. This is how you do tutes - cover all the key points so the student can go & develop all areas of expertise. 5*****
I really recommend all the music theory courses available here. They are very easy to comprehend and very systematic.
Like the rest of the "Beginner" courses in this series, I initially considered this to be a "refresher", but continued to learn new things.
Great course. I have fallen behind on my music theory in the last few years and this has been a great way to recap everything I have forgotten.
good course for beginners to the theory side of things could have done with a more in-depth look at the circle of fifths but some really important areas covered with clarity :)
Excellent overview of harmony. The information helped to clear up some misunderstanding I had on this topic.
Great explanation of different types of harmony, as well as the different terms associated with utilizing all of the techniques in creating unique harmonies!
Can't get tired of this Music theory courses, Harmony, Melody, Rhythm, Basslines, they're all so entertaining at the same time.
Thank you! THANK YOU!!! I finally found what I've been missing. This is such a succinct, uncomplicated succession of concepts. At last - at the tender age of 42 - I get it; I REALLY get it!
Another Great introduction to Music Theory, this time on the subject of Harmony and Chords. Really well made. This is an amazing series so far.
Great intro to harmony from which you can then research more in depth on your own, covers all the essentials in a simple way to understand
Definitely one of the best courses on this site! I had to repeat some of the vids a few times to make sure I got it all in my notes. Essential for anyone who trying to take their music to new levels
This is musical theory made easy. Very good. Highly recommended!
Very informative, particularly on chord structure. The graphics are an acquired taste to say the least, but the course itself is very helpful.
I found this tutorial course to be over all pretty good. the Sus Chord, Power chord, modulation & circle of 5ths videos were helpful for me.
I love the pacing of these music theory tutorials. The short few minute chunks keep the course from becoming overwhelming. The explanation of the suspended chords was great.
This course was simply BRILLIANT!!! Can't wait to check out the rest of the series!!! Mr. Fine rules! Good job MacPro
Very good overview of the various ways to create harmony. Gregg is an excellent teacher, and I would love to see some more advanced courses in song writing put out by him.
Coming from post production audio this tutorial has helped me with a better understanding of music.
I liked this class very much - it's a very well structured class. Gregg is a great teacher. While the class is great, I've got some recommendations: * What I really would like to see in classes about basics are pointers to books and further literature - in my experience literature tipps by a pro are worth a lot. * Additionally, I would really love to see the parts on progressions and moduli extended. I would like to understand more deeply how a chord prepares for the next, what are the functional relations of chords in different music styles - or at least, I would love to have some literature hints on how to understand this...
Your means of teaching really makes learning these concepts easy. In traditional teaching I would always be left with un-answered questions that left me less than confidant. Your course answered those questions.
I'm new to Pro Tools and music. I had the opportunity and resources to purchase these video and I found them helpful overall because I'm able to repeat sections that I don't understand and take the time absorb the information.
Excellent, and thoroughly enjoyable, just like Melody was. Gregg is an outstanding trainer, who has me looking forward to Rhythm and Song Form.
Love em so far! My only criticism is that it be great to learn how to exercise or play a game with these rules just to help get this information settled in. The art is mega nerdy and I dig the humor and visual comparisons. I know a lot more about music theory than I ever did before these videos.
Outstanding! Strongly recommend for any musician.
